Is Ady Purely a Man Motivator ....

I am beginning to believe that allthough he is great at motivating the squad, Adey is a bit lacking in tactical know how and that his promotion of 'Direct' football is a bit of a smokescreen to hide his shortcomings and not the shortcomings of the players that he has available.

My reasons for saying this are:

    1. We play the same style of football and nearly always the same team no matter if we are Home/Away of playing Man Utd or Sheff Utd.

    2. There are very few tactical substitutions during the game.

Perhaps it's just down to a lack of experience? All the coaching courses and badges in the world won't prepare you for the situations that face managers during games. Granted he has been in charge for over a year now but he's still learning, hopefully is just down to a lack of experience and as he learns from mistakes he's made we'll hopefully notice a change.

Either that or he has a complete faith in the style he makes us play and refuses to change it because he believes its the way that helps us perform best.

On the substitutions side, does he really have the players on the bench that are capable of making the impact we need during games? Im of the opinion that those on the bench, people like spring and macca, just aren't up to the Prem and would harm the team more than benefit if they were brought on.

It certainly shouldn't be the case because he has Burkinshaw to support him! I'd hate to think an experienced manager like him wouldn't know his tactics!

To be fair to Aidy he is a quality manager and will be the best English manager within next 5 years, tactically he's very good...little do we forget he's been in the industry all of 20 months!

We'll see how shrewd he is in January I guess...

    hang on a minute!

I think you are being very harsh... Aidy has to do what he is doing, say what he is saying, and believe whole-heartedly in his purpose and game plan!!

HE HAS NO CHOICE!!!!...Whether he is entirely to blame for the lack of strength in depth with our squad is debatable, but he is effectively running a Premier League football first team with a squad of about 13 players!!

I think he is doing it very well too!!!

    YOU 'ORRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Budfrog on this one. There have been quite a few times I've watched Watford matches under Aidy and expected a tactical sub to take place which hasn't then happened. Baring in mind my 'expectation' is based on 10yrs watching the live game while Aidy's decision is based mainly on coaching courses, I guess you could say he was more qualified. But I know plenty of other people who watch Watford regularly who agree with me on this one, so it's not just me being barmy.

LBH is right to an extent - he doesn't have much to play with in the first place. And Keiran is right to bring up the odd example of when Aidy has altered things about tactically to our benefit. But I can't quite shift the nagging thought from the back of my mind which says Aidy isn't quite on the ball on that side of his game. Still, experience is the key I guess and only time can sort that one out.

    Adiy Boothroyd football genius...

point taken UEA.... BUT... with looking at the options available on the bench, the only tactical changes that can possibly be made are very limited...

ie... swapping the attack round by swapping positions of Smith, Bouazza and Young which invariably means pushing defensive players like Chambers and Stewart into midfield positions.... which when tried doesnt work as well as our best 11 in their best positions....

maybe this will change with a few extra players brought into the squad in January..... with more choice available, I think Aidy will show a tactical side to his management skills that so far this season, he, us and the team have been denied!!

I don’t actually see what Aidy could change, our squad depth is awful, the first 11 are our best players particularly the attacking options. The only player who is proven and who could create something is Spring.

The squad is fit, we don’t have to make changes. IF King was still fit we’d have a proven attacking option on the bench that could change the game but we don’t. (Maybe Aidy’s biggest mistake was not getting another striker).

Priskin is not ready mentally or physically for the Premiership, it was the same last year when we had Francis on the bench without any serious intention of playing him. Priskin is an emergency option imo, there in case Hendo, Young, Bouazza or Smith get injured.

Bedsides we saw last season Aidy can change his tactics depending on the team we were playing. We are in a much better division now, the players aren’t good enough so we are relying on Aidy’s motivation speeches and tactical consistency is important so the players get a good understanding and perform better.

It is broken, Aidy knows it’s broken, but what can he honestly do? In the past I’d have said give the youngsters a go, but if you perform badly in the Premiership everyone knows, and it could cripple a young persons career – my ‘mate’ proudly showed me a joke about our strikers in Nuts the other day – at least Darius is probably wise enough to take it on the chin.

    what was the joke?

burkinshaw has tactical knowledge. if aidy wasnt sure what to do he would ask, so we do have to play like this.

but i do agree he is better at man management and motivation

Does seem to lack confidence in the subs this season for whatever reason...not sure what Priskin has done wrong to not get on in the last 3 games?

I remember Aidy has said in the past when we in his view we get better players with more quality the style of football will change which again suggest he doesn't have the total confidence of some current players that they can pass the ball etc.

aidy is god. he will turn it around and i feel he is a little apprehensive to using subs as i feel he thinks they are not good enough. a few good signings in jan and i feel we will see a rotation system introduced where aidy will no longer be afraid to make a sub and will feel more at ease bringing on a different midfielder or striker

It's a little of what everyone's said here I believe. A lack of depth plus the fact that we've never usually been out of many games at the 60-70 minute mark so maybe a touch of over caution. Make a bad choice in the Premiership and you're normally punished for it.

5 years down the line I believe we'll be established up here and Aidy on his way to huge things elsewhere.
