Dear Hornets fans, I’m a Wolves fan – coming in peace and hoping you can help me out… I’m a senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University, writing academic papers as part of my PhD portfolio (Koln University). My research has a focus on the language used by football fans at games – for some people it’s ‘banter’ and for others, it has become a ‘hate crime’. It is a complex, emotive issue. I want to find out what you think of the language used – I want you to be honest. The questionnaire is entirely voluntary and completely anonymous. I will only use the data I obtain for academic papers and once complete I will share the data with you on this forum. I have ethical approval granted from Koln University and approval from your administrator for this forum. I will be comparing your answers with those from supporters of Arsenal, Wolves, Blackburn and Newcastle. The questionnaire only takes a couple of minutes and I would like to thank you in advance. Here is the link: https://questionpro.com/t/AX3LcZyJou One last thing – I’m still crying over the semi-final… Kind regards, Peter Evans
Good luck with the research Peter. This particular section of the forum is a bit of a backwater, unfrequented by most. For a better response (quantitatively at least) you may want to repost it in ‘The Hornets Nest’ or ‘General Football’ where the soccerball fans hang out. All the best.
I wouldn't post it in the Hornets Nest as it's not strictly about Watford but football in general. I'll move it to "General Football and Other Sports".
Completed the survey. It's a good insight actually on how the rules of the game need to be looked at to stamp this sort of thing out. I know a lot of clubs do the whole "if you see it report it" stance, but maybe we need to go a step further and make sure offenders are banned forever from stadiums to send a tougher message.
Peter, you do realise that because of our club's long relationship/history with Sir Elton John our results are going to be a bit of an 'outlier' compared to other clubs.
Hi, yes I'm expecting that to be the case and will take it into account. I have interviewed people from the Brighton community also and the results their reflected a different dominant culture to that of my home town (Wolverhampton). It is part of the rich fabric of this research...
Tricky mulitple choice / scale in parts as for some I agreed with half of one statement and the other half of one next door.
‘there’ You could also do a study on the poor grammer and speling (sic) and childish use of emojis in football forums Peter. Very serious issue for us/we some pedants. I’m tired of Watford loosing so often.. Survey completed.
Hi, I had already spotted my faux pas on 'their', unfortunately I could not find an editing facility - please excuse my apparent dilettantism.
Tried to do it but got stuck on the 2nd holding hands question. For the first one I answered don't know, for the next you do not have that option.
I guess that's true...losing the semi probably drove us on to European qualification. However, things aren't going to well for us now....
Thank you for all the replies from Watford fans (60 in total)...very much appreciated. If you haven't already done so, the questionnaire is still open for your views. Cheers...
