A mildly embarrassing comment at the time and now looks very silly. A few mistakes at Spurs but judging by the welcome he got there a few weeks ago he wasn't as bad people made out
Gomes is an excellent shot stopper and sometimes makes it look spectacular, but looking at footballstats.com he has let in more goals than Pantillimon, Arlauskis, Gartside and Gilmartin put together this season.
Ummm didn't you look at the date they were posted? Clearly tongue in cheek as he'd already been with us a season...
We've been very lucky with keepers in the past. I thought Almunia was a great keeper for us in the Championship, but to get Gomes whilst we were still in the Championship was a masterstroke. He's a top quality person, but someone who was harshly treated at Spurs and was the butt of many jokes. That's what happens when you're playing in the wrong environment. At Watford, fans are far more appreciative and forgiving, and he has responded to this and is thriving. I actually think since Pantilimon has signed it has pushed Gomes to even greater heights. His form now is absolutely outstanding. Some of the saves he is making are breath taking. He does tend to show his age a bit after he makes a save, as he doesn't spring back up very quickly, which always makes me laugh......as I absolutely know the feeling. He has always time for everyone and is a great ambassador for the club. Make the most of him now though, as I'm not too sure he'll still be with us next season, sadly.
I'm not sure I'm the one who looks silly.. EDIT: Ok now I do as I've just noticed UEA posted the exact same thing!
I have to say I hadn't noticed the date and now look an utter fool. I'm just popping outside, I maybe sometime
Personally don't think how we can keep him if he wants European football next year. He is certainly good enough. Think he is the best keeper in the league and probably our best acquisition Pozzo era.
I hope at this stage in his career he just wants regular prem league football in front of a bunch of fans who appreciate him, and with whom he's earned a few credits to know that we won't be on his back if he makes a couple of clangers, like Leicester away. I doubt he'd want to go back to a champion league team and risk sitting on the bench or being berated by fans after a mistake. I suppose a twilight career move back to PSV where he's also loved might be a risk. I agree he's been a fantastic acquisition.
The best keeper in the league is pushing it. De Gea, Lloris and Cech have all been consistently better than him for a number of years, he's only had one year at the top level recently. I'd certainly put him on a par with the likes of Schmeichel this season, though. Comfortably top five in the league at the moment. Of course, if we could choose any keeper in the league, I'd imagine there would be more than four others we'd choose ahead of him, pu
Not his season they haven't according to the stats ... and previously is subjective as HG wasn't playing PL football.
