Bond must be going out on loan or being sold then, otherwise I can't see the point of signing a 4th choice keeper?
Hopefully. He has to be rated to be in the England Under-21 and get game time so now's the time to prove he's worth it.
Giving young Homegrown keepers everywhere, the motivation to keep trying, who knows one day a team way above your level may need too fill homegrown slots.
No doubt Bond will be loaned out... Good for Rene seems like a really top bloke to have around the place...
I don't know how many times people can reiterate that we don't need to fill any homegrown slots in the PL. The rules are no where near as strict as the Football League.
Probably a good time to sell him provided that a large sell on percentage is included. Realistically he has no chance of ever being our number 1 now we have the Lithuanian keeper.
He's funny on Hornets Player, but if we are handing out contract extensions to players who will never play, I'd prefer Doyley.
For those as forgetful (or plain dumb) as me, would your patience stretch to repeating it one more time?
http://www.wfcforums.com/showthread.php?55131-Watford-25-Man-Squad-2015-16-%28-as-it-stands-%29 We can only name a 25 man squad of players over the age of 21 (on jan 1st 2015). 8 of those places are restricted to home grown players only the other 17 can be filled anyone regardless of home grown status We are under no obligation to name a full 25 players its useful to leave a few gaps for improvements in january if necessary or even a free player after the transfer window has closed. all players under the age of 21 are eligible to play at any stage of the season. By not filling the home grown slots we're only reducing the number of players at our disposal. Other teams have gone with squads as low as 20 due to the lack of home grown players.
There's absolutely no point selling a keeper like Bond who has 15 years left in him. Keep giving him the first team football he wants out on loan until he's in a position to seriously challenge for number one spot. Udinese have 5 or 6 keepers on their books I think? Just let them play football and watch them progress. If he has a few spells on loan and doesn't seem to improve then fair enough, get some money for him.
Firstly if he doesn't improve we won't get anything for him. Secondly he will probably want to be settled somewhere rather than keep going out on loan. Also it is unlikely he will sign another contract if he has no real prospect of heing our number one for many years. He will just run down his contract and we will only get a nominal fee. Surely if the coaching staff don't really rate him, it is better to cash in now provided that a high sell on percentage is included as with Assombalonga. Personally I would have kept him as number 2.
That's a bit of a myth really. 15 years left in him playing where? Look at the keepers who make it to their mid-30s still playing in the top two or three divisions. They're often the ones who were playing regular Premier League football at 25. The Paul Robinsons and Chris Kirklands. Yeah he could bench sit like Richard Lee, Gabor Kiraly, Joe Muprhy, Paddy Kenny I suppose but it likely wouldn't be here at the age of 38.
If he doesn't improve from where he is now we'd still easily get a couple of hundred grand for him, not bad for an academy product. If he has a couple of decent loan spells but he still isn't good enough for us then that price will still go up.
He probably has a reasonable value now as an England U21 regular but I don't think his true value will be known until he's had at least one full season somewhere as No1. Let's face it, he's not going to get that here. It depends how highly the club rate his potential. They might cash in or they might loan him out for a season or two. I suspect the latter unless a good offer has already been received for him.
Article here about Rene Gilmartin: http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/rene-gilmartin-relishing-shot-at-the-big-time-346146.html? Clearly they overstate his chances a tad when they say at the start he's in a battle with Gomes and Ariauskis to be our first team goalkeeper this season. Gilmartin himself is much more realistic in his quoted comments though. And it's interesting to see he's already done his UEFA B Licence, is looking to be coach when he's done and is already working with the academy players.
He's a really impressive pundit, so I'd think he has a good chance of succeeding as a coach. Sticking around as a backup keeper, learning all he can from what he sees, would seem to be a good move. Best of luck to him.
In one of those moments considering the what ifs. If we had not released Gilmartin, he would have been available as back up keeper against Leeds instead of Jack Bonham. If he had played, it is likely we would have made it to the Premiership in Zola's first season. When you think it through it does show how important it is to have a third keeper who at least has a bit of experience, physical presence and has spent time working with the first team defenders. He could play an important part yet in our history.
Without being one of those who prefers to think the present is better than the past much, I get the feeling we wouldn't have done well in the Prem if we went up that season. Our scouts know more about English football now than back then and (I feel anyways) they know more about which type of player to get for a certain position etc.
He was, 100%. I don't blame him, though; he was absolutely inexperienced and thrown into the deep end with zero advance warning. It was horrifically unfair on him. He might even have been hung over since he wasn't in the match day squad; it's very possible he was out on the town the night before. The real criticism should be laid on the management team for the lack of a realistic third keeper option for critical games. Bonham was not ready to handle the pressure of a promotion campaign.
Christ, honestly forgot all that happened so early. Mix of Bonham and Ekstrand for the first iirc imo
Of course this is all hypothetical and kind of redundant now that we're promoted. But Gilmartin when he actually played for us was horrendously error prone. Experience doesn't count for much when you haven't got much ability. Does seem like a good guy to have around the place and I enjoy listening to his insights on the radio, but I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable with him playing for us this season were Gomes and Arlauskis to pick up injuries.
Rene will be sub keeper for the first two games, Arlauskis is suspended. Gomes doesn't have the cleanest injury record either. Rene is going to get his time to shine on MOTD!
Cba to start a new thread, but apparently we're signing Udinese keeper Romo on a two week emergency loan.
