Been playing ARK: Survival Ascended, which is UE 5, and it looks absolutely incredible.

Requires a really good rig to play in high settings/frames though.

I doubt GTA 6 will release on UE 6 - UE 5 hasn't been out that long and is nowhere near optimized yet. UE 6 is likely still years away and GTA 6 will have been developing for UE 5 for a while now.

I wouldn't hold your breath on a UE 6 release.

Bit of advice please: I'm far from a serious gamer. Last console I had was a PS2 which I got rid of more than a decade ago.

I don't have any intention to game online or spend hours on any one specific game, though I'm sure some of the recent games are vast and would blow the mind of someone who loves resident evil, metal gear solid and tekken tag.

Looking for a cheap fix, I've seen reasonable PS4 bundles for 100 quid online, but there are also PS3 for half that.

Would a PS3 still be worth getting, mainly to play a few old games and maybe find some fun ones for the kids to enjoy as a change from watching YouTube videos?

Or is the PS3 completely defunct? PS4 still seems OK as I don't think I need the increased processing power and graphics of a PS5 considering I loved playing as Jill Valentine on PS1 standard graphics.

Whilst it might provide a little fun, I don't think the PS3 is relevant anymore, the value is really only in old games that haven't been remade or ported properly to the PS4 - seeing as the PS4 wasn't backwards compatible. Mgs is on this list.

Ps4 runs Fortnite, Minecraft, fifa and Roblox so whatever the kids end up being into, it's on the 4 but not the 3.

If you just want a bit of family fun - Nintendo switch. But not at under 100 quid.

You can get a 2nd hand PS4 for less than 80 from a high street retailer with 12m warranty. As much as I loathe the subscription model, playstation plus extra let's you access a back catalog of games including for the time being, resident evil 2 and 3 remastered.

I second @Hornpete on this regard. PS3 had it's time on the limelight but Sony bungled it badly with faulty Blu-Ray drives and loud vac fans. There were too many types, where as the Xbox 360 had two main models before it went slim line.

PS4 is still def. worth considering despite it feeling outdated a bit nowadays. It stomps all over the Xbox One and is more than enough for a causal gamer who is not interested in playing in 4K etc. Plus, there are loads of games still available online and offline, much cheaper nowadays as well. Only thing you might have to consider is storage space, but a 500GB HDD standard that should be more than enough for a quite a few games.

As for Ms. Valentine, yeah she had nice pixels in 1996. This was her in 2002 om the Nintendo Gamecube.

She looks more "realistic" in the Resident Evil 3 Remake, but I prefer this version of her. Not as "sexually defined" as she seems to be in modern days. Heck in Resident Evil Revelations she wears a wet suit that is so skin tight it just about passed the ERB rating for a 15+. :p

The PS3 is a relic and not really worth considering at this point. PS4 is definitely still worth a shout though. Most games still release on it even now which means you've got over a decade of games to choose from.

Yeah, PS4 definitely for casual use. Still works great, graphics are fine and you can pick up games for peanuts from eBay or Vinted etc as well as the mentioned PS Plus (but it’s prohibitively expensive IMO).

really useful info - cheers guys. Annoyingly I had a PS4 with 9 games agreed for £50. The seller then decided to give all the good games to his mate, so it became a worse deal. I am gonna hold out for a sub 100 quid package with 2 controllers and a few good games.

One question about storage - as my last system was a PS2, does this matter if I play games off disc? Doesn't the system just load and play them, or does it install them all on the internal drive? In which case it might be worth paying a bit extra for a 1TB version.

Depends how many games you have on there. Modern games can be pretty large in size and I tend to play multiple games at a time so I wouldn’t go lower than 1TB. But if you’re playing casual and uninstall when you’ve finished, maybe lower would be alright.

So the games are installed on the hard drive. If I wanted to switch between 6 or 7 different games on a 500mb system then, once it reached capacity I'd have to uninstall and reinstall, presumably losing all saved progress.

Yeah and you’ll still need the disc to play them as well (unless you buy from the PS Store). Save progress should stay on the console after deleting the game so you can resume after reinstall. Save files are pretty small.

Disc games don't install everything on the HD. Just any updates and saves etc. I manage with the OG 500gb version. But yeah if I download GTA I have to uninstall COD.

Just to add to the above, save data is digital and not stored on any medium (memory card for PS2 for example). You can even download your save files from their version of the "Cloud" which is a digital storage space built into the BIOS. You will generally have to 'upload' it first so the console can check if it's not corrupted, then download it to the save files. But as @GoingDown and @Hornpete said above, this shouldn't be an issue if your not planning on amassing a very large library.

You can also get external drives (Seagate do a very good one) if space does become an issue on a 500GB console.
