Been playing ARK: Survival Ascended, which is UE 5, and it looks absolutely incredible.

Requires a really good rig to play in high settings/frames though.

I doubt GTA 6 will release on UE 6 - UE 5 hasn't been out that long and is nowhere near optimized yet. UE 6 is likely still years away and GTA 6 will have been developing for UE 5 for a while now.

I wouldn't hold your breath on a UE 6 release.

Bit of advice please: I'm far from a serious gamer. Last console I had was a PS2 which I got rid of more than a decade ago.

I don't have any intention to game online or spend hours on any one specific game, though I'm sure some of the recent games are vast and would blow the mind of someone who loves resident evil, metal gear solid and tekken tag.

Looking for a cheap fix, I've seen reasonable PS4 bundles for 100 quid online, but there are also PS3 for half that.

Would a PS3 still be worth getting, mainly to play a few old games and maybe find some fun ones for the kids to enjoy as a change from watching YouTube videos?

Or is the PS3 completely defunct? PS4 still seems OK as I don't think I need the increased processing power and graphics of a PS5 considering I loved playing as Jill Valentine on PS1 standard graphics.

Whilst it might provide a little fun, I don't think the PS3 is relevant anymore, the value is really only in old games that haven't been remade or ported properly to the PS4 - seeing as the PS4 wasn't backwards compatible. Mgs is on this list.

Ps4 runs Fortnite, Minecraft, fifa and Roblox so whatever the kids end up being into, it's on the 4 but not the 3.

If you just want a bit of family fun - Nintendo switch. But not at under 100 quid.

You can get a 2nd hand PS4 for less than 80 from a high street retailer with 12m warranty. As much as I loathe the subscription model, playstation plus extra let's you access a back catalog of games including for the time being, resident evil 2 and 3 remastered.

I second @Hornpete on this regard. PS3 had it's time on the limelight but Sony bungled it badly with faulty Blu-Ray drives and loud vac fans. There were too many types, where as the Xbox 360 had two main models before it went slim line.

PS4 is still def. worth considering despite it feeling outdated a bit nowadays. It stomps all over the Xbox One and is more than enough for a causal gamer who is not interested in playing in 4K etc. Plus, there are loads of games still available online and offline, much cheaper nowadays as well. Only thing you might have to consider is storage space, but a 500GB HDD standard that should be more than enough for a quite a few games.

As for Ms. Valentine, yeah she had nice pixels in 1996. This was her in 2002 om the Nintendo Gamecube.

She looks more "realistic" in the Resident Evil 3 Remake, but I prefer this version of her. Not as "sexually defined" as she seems to be in modern days. Heck in Resident Evil Revelations she wears a wet suit that is so skin tight it just about passed the ERB rating for a 15+. :p

The PS3 is a relic and not really worth considering at this point. PS4 is definitely still worth a shout though. Most games still release on it even now which means you've got over a decade of games to choose from.

Yeah, PS4 definitely for casual use. Still works great, graphics are fine and you can pick up games for peanuts from eBay or Vinted etc as well as the mentioned PS Plus (but it’s prohibitively expensive IMO).

really useful info - cheers guys. Annoyingly I had a PS4 with 9 games agreed for £50. The seller then decided to give all the good games to his mate, so it became a worse deal. I am gonna hold out for a sub 100 quid package with 2 controllers and a few good games.

One question about storage - as my last system was a PS2, does this matter if I play games off disc? Doesn't the system just load and play them, or does it install them all on the internal drive? In which case it might be worth paying a bit extra for a 1TB version.

  8. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Depends how many games you have on there. Modern games can be pretty large in size and I tend to play multiple games at a time so I wouldn’t go lower than 1TB. But if you’re playing casual and uninstall when you’ve finished, maybe lower would be alright.

  9. wfcmoog

So the games are installed on the hard drive. If I wanted to switch between 6 or 7 different games on a 500mb system then, once it reached capacity I'd have to uninstall and reinstall, presumably losing all saved progress.

  10. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Yeah and you’ll still need the disc to play them as well (unless you buy from the PS Store). Save progress should stay on the console after deleting the game so you can resume after reinstall. Save files are pretty small.

Disc games don't install everything on the HD. Just any updates and saves etc. I manage with the OG 500gb version. But yeah if I download GTA I have to uninstall COD.

Just to add to the above, save data is digital and not stored on any medium (memory card for PS2 for example). You can even download your save files from their version of the "Cloud" which is a digital storage space built into the BIOS. You will generally have to 'upload' it first so the console can check if it's not corrupted, then download it to the save files. But as @GoingDown and @Hornpete said above, this shouldn't be an issue if your not planning on amassing a very large library.

You can also get external drives (Seagate do a very good one) if space does become an issue on a 500GB console.

Is there any point to owning lots of different editions of FIFA? Surely they're more or less the same with just updates to players and teams?
I've got 15, 16 and 18 from charity shops - the benefit of this will be that they are when Watford weren't ****. Surely no point in getting any more of them?

If you're sticking to PS4 then I'd say not really. They had a generational shift when the PS5 and Series X came out but even that seemed pretty subtle and the gameplay barely any different.

EA had a falling out with FIFA for whatever reason so lost the license to use the "Fifa" branding. However they resulted in calling it FC2024 or something like that. To be honest all the update each time is squad updates and a slightly better graphics. EA are completely obsessed with their Ultimate Team, which to many has overtaken the care they used to take in making each entry in the franchise as unique as possible.

Got Resident Evil from PS store for 3.99. Can't wait to do that again in about 3 hours.

Play as Jill, run past most zombies, skip all cutscenes and use any bonus weapons. I've beaten in two and a half hours before. Oh, and obviously play on the easy setting.

Looking forward to seeing what I can get out of the likes of Cyberpunk at 1440p. Pretty significant upgrade from my current 3070 Ti.

I’ve modded the hell out of Cyberpunk getting all the 4k hi-res graphic overhauls and the like, I even got path tracing to actually work on my ‘pitiful’ 3080 founders and it looked sensational. At the 8 FPS I managed to get.

I love the speeds I can get for ray tracing but once you’ve seen path tracing, it’s hard to go back.

Absolute Bargain Nath well spotted. I hope you have a lot of fun with your new card.

I just finished building a gaming PC for my niece on the AMD 5 platform.

    DDR5 32 Gig of Corsair 38000 RAM
    AMD Ryzen 7 7800x 3D
Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB of VRAM.
    Windows 11 Ultimate
Water cooling included, gaming mouse and keyboard and a monitor capable of running all top games in at least 1400p.

She loves it. Problem is she's into Minecraft, RoBloX and Sims. Maybe a bit overkill for those games but she's worth it.

Finally installed it today, along with a new PSU.

At 1440p, with DLSS quality, every single graphics options maxed out to the highest, including path tracing, I'm getting an average of about 65 FPS during night time gameplay and mostly anything between 75-85 FPS during day time gameplay. Red Dead 2 fully maxed out is anything between about 100 and 140 FPS.

    It's a whole new world.

I got RD2 this week and gonna load it up today. Gonna play it on a crap monitor with no sound output, using usb headphones with a normal PS4 because I don't understand any of the very impressive stats you quoted.

Very nice. Any graphics mods used? The stuff on YouTube regarding ‘real life’ graphic fidelity is true apparently. It’s quite incredible.

Trigger finger getting itchy on upgrading. Your comments don’t help at all. I don’t need that level of detail but I want it.

I wanna get Cyberpunk in the future to play on PS5. Playing Assassins Creed Odyssey at the moment, have been for quite a while, the map is massive in that game.

I started ACO. I had to uninstall it (it's massive) to play anything else and I wanted to play MGS the Phantom Pain. I got a bit bored when it became seafaring missions. I preferred land based stuff.

I've finished the first half of Metal Gear. Gameplay is actually quite similar to ACO in many ways

ACO is a mix between Black Flag and the original games. It's miles better than Valhalla which was a trash. I think ACO is a game that needs to be played in moderation, a bit like Far Cry 5/6 it's so big you can get burned out if you play it for long periods.

If you want to look at more comedic version of ACO, take a look at Immortals Pheonix Rising, Map is a lot smaller but there are loads of puzzles and some pretty damn good challenge tombs.

Holy crap that thing is a beast! I'm glad you got a top level Intel CPU before they went all downhill. You should be able to tear through any modern and upcoming game on near max settings with little to no lag or need to enable anti-screen tearing. I hope you have a load of fun with it. If your motherboard is capable I would def. consider upgrading RAM to 64gb in the future, just to well, future proof it completely.
