That was me last Friday, not a fan of Marvel in the slightest, don’t think I’ve ever seen a Spider-Man either. Got asked to go with a girl I’ve been dating as she’s a Marvel fan.

I had absolutely no idea what was going on, and as you say long and boring. She actually said she thought it was rubbish, and she’s a fan.

Totally agree, that made no sense to me either and was just a ridiculous stretch for that to be his overriding priority. Also the whole ‘cure them’ part just made no sense to to me, I get that if he sent them back they were about to be killed, but even though I’ve not seen any of them, I’m assuming in all the other Spider-Man films he doesn’t spend the whole film trying to cure the ‘baddies’? So why was he suddenly so worried about doing it for ones from other multiverses?

You know what though, something genuinely impressive, the woman that plays his aunt? She’s 57!

    FIFTY SEVEN!

    Hot damn.

And if you’ve got Willem Dafoe, use the spooky *******!

Yeah, she very much bucks the trend of Men ageing Better than Woman compared to her co-star John Favreau, who is two years younger but looks like ****.

I was more of a Pingu man in the early 90’s, I doubt two year old me would have appreciated her in 1994.

Thanks for this review - as someone who loves the original film and had therefore decided, on principle, not to watch this version as I was so sure there was no way it could compare favourably, it’s really interesting to hear that you enjoyed it so much. You’ve made me think that maybe I should give it a go.

I watched quite a few classics during my isolation period:

Oldboy - Probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen - makes Reservoir Dogs look like a kid's film - 9/10
The Departed - An enjoyable film with a great cast but I felt something was missing to take it to that elite level - 8.5/10
Django Unchained - Another good film, but again, not quite elite - 8.5/10
Seven Samurai - This was a long slog, 3 and a half hours in Japanese and black and white. Despite that, for its era, it was actually very enjoyable - 9/10
Back to the Future - Surprisingly I had never seen this before. Solid watch, if not spectacular - 8/10
Casablanca - I'm not sure if I went into this nearly expecting to enjoy it due to its standing, but I thought it was great - 10/10
Alien - Also very enjoyable and I've probably given it a slightly lower score due to myself subconsciously comparing it to modern sci-fi films - 8/10

How did you never watch Back To The Future or Alien? Just not a sci-fi fan?

The 2nd movie in both those franchises are the best.

Would agree regarding the Departed and Django, they’re good films but I personally feel they’re somewhat overrated.

It seems unlikely if you’ve only just watched Alien, but have you seen Aliens? It’s in that same rare bracket as T2, in that some argue the sequel is better than the original. It’s that little bit more modern so you may find you prefer it.

Edit: GD has beaten me to it with regards to the sequel being better.

I’d also add it all pretty much goes to **** after that as far as the Aliens franchise is concerned.

Movies from the 80s (according to google Alien is 1979 but I'm throwing it in there) are a real blind spot for me it seems. Haven't seen Indiana Jones or any Star Wars movies except Episode 3 as well. Also yet to watch Ghostbusters, Top Gun, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, etc.

I've watched a lot of movies from the 30s-70s, but for some reason I've nearly missed out that decade. Going to try and rectify it by making my way through some of the classics.

This is tricky because being born in 81 Ghostbusters and Indiana Jones are up there as some of my favourite films of all time, and I’ve probably seen them about 100 times, but a lot of that will be clouded by nostalgia as I watched them as a kid, and I think watching them now as an adult for the first time it would be completely different.

Yeah, I felt that I was having the opposite from that when watching Back to the Future.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but found no reason for it to be such a huge cult, classic. I'd say a lot of that is down to nostalgia.

I think it was the first of the ‘summer blockbuster’ movies so I’m not sure it’s so much cult really. It probably only gets called cult because it’s sci-fi. I do enjoy the trilogy but the first and third annoy me more than they did than when I was a kid. I still love the second one. I’ll let you watch them without saying much more.

I agree on the third one, I find it tedious. I can see why it gets cult status though, people have been referencing it’s predictions on what the future will be like for years. Hoverboards, self tying laces etc.

Probably an exaggeration, possibly not. I must’ve watched them maybe once a week or more as a kid for a long while once I got the VHS copies for birthday or Xmas, and then they’re the sort of films that when you see them on TV you just end up watching them. I haven’t got kids but I’m sure anyone with them can attest to how many times a kid can watch something they like.

I love the Back to the Future films but was delighted that rumours of a fourth one have denied. The Departed was excellent but never seen Casablanca. The original Oceans 11 is worth a watch

Ferris Bueller is brilliant and my all time favourite movie. Sadly the chap who plays the Principle has a bit of a dodgy past. can't remember what but I think @wfcmoog mentioned it

I watched Death of Stalin this week. Great cast, biting satire and actually historically interesting.

Also watched Jungle Cruise with the kids. Complete nonsense of a film with The Rock and Jack Whitehall. Can't really imagine how anyone thought it was a good idea but there you go. Kids were entertained for 2 hours though.

Definitely a film for all the family. I saw it as the first feature of a double bill at the Gulbenkian Theatre (University of Kent's Cinema) with the "Reservoir Dogs" in '92 (it was a themed "Canine Evening"). Half the audience had left before "K Billy's Super Sounds of the 70's" started...

Nobody with Bob Odenkirk. Silly and violent but a very enjoyable film.

For some reason reminded me a bit of baby driver, and a few other films as well.

Watched The Founder last night. Michael Keaton is great as the chiseling hustler who took McDonald's from a small town burger bar to the mega-business it is today. I admit it sounds a bit dry but it's really quite good

I love “The Breakfast Club”, but more because I watched it a few years after it came out when I was a teenager so I associate it with the nostalgia that @a19tgg mentions above. See also “St Elmo’s Fire”.
