Sopranos and The Wire for me

Sopranos just edges it but thats just my personal preference

Perhaps the two best dramas ever made

 

Far far too mainstream.

The best shows always have a cult minority following.

It's why Michael Macintyre and Russel Howard have become rubbish.

 

I know what you mean but The Sopranos has consistently topped lists of the best ever tv shows and still seems to have escaped the anti-mainstream backlash

Agree with the Sopranos. It was head and shoulders better than most comparable dramas.

 

Seinfeld is brillant, because it's about nothing. Just four people. The funniest episode is when they decieded to obstain from masterbation, and a competition of who would last the longest.

 

Haha yes! That one is brilliant. I loved the final episode as well.

 

It may apply to stand up comedians, but in regards to TV programs this is utter, utter crap.

Don't you wonder why some of the best regarded tv series of all time only lasted for one or two series? The office, fawlty towers, extras, etc etc

I'm gonna put this out there, and prepare for the backlash, but Fawlty Towers is actually rubbish.

I may be joining the bandwagon a little late but I'm the latest sheep to start the circle-jerk over The Wire.

I'm on the 3rd series watching episodes back to back

 

I have a friend who loves to tell people the Beatles are crap.

I get his point, even if I don't necessarily agree with it, mostly that they are overrated and definitely overexposed. But the reason they are so important if I may mix my metaphors is they mapped out the blueprint for what a rock and roll band could do. Rock musicians were mostly pawns of record companies before them, and after you see an incredible explosion of expression that the record companies figured out a way to retool and build a megacultural industry on. You can argue that someone else would have done it sooner or later, but the Beatles DID it.

I feel the same about Fawlty Towers to some degree. Mildly funny, "Don't mention the war!" but I couldnt watch all the way through of most episodes without wanting to turn the channel. However, don't you think it's influence was felt far beyond the few episodes made?

 

I think The Wire will be my next one having just finished all of 24. Can't wait for the film though.

 

The Beatles music or the early Beatles was incredibly simple , it was around just three cords , G , C , D , C ,G , C , D , C , G. If you can play those cords on the guitar you have a number 1 hit on your hands . Listen to most music they keep to that structure. It works.

Fawlty Towers is just your worst nightmare, all us have experienced it some way or another , but being able to recognise it makes it funny.

If you just get a bunch of people in a room , say the pub.,golf club or the OFFICE some of the stories told or just happen are side spliting.

 

Looking forward to the new Series of NCIS due to start in the next week or two. I also beleive that series 3 of Leverage which stopped when Bravo closed is to be shown on FX

 

Just watched the third series of Sons Of Anarchy, storylines are ridiculous and the Irish accents are laughable but it's very entertaining.

 

I wasn't a huge fan of the third season, first two are excellent though and I'll probably start the fourth soon, which is meant to be brilliant.

 

Another one here looking forward to the return of NCIS. I am also really concerned about the safety of Natalia (Eva LaRUE:love2 in CSI Miami , she was last seen in the trunk of a car sinking into the Atlantic Ocean. I do hope she's ok.

 

Not technically a TV series but Treasure Island on Sky 1 was good.

Yeah! Absolutely hilarious stuff. The one in China when he goes "I thought it would smell more sweet and sour", literally made me cry with laughter. Managed to see the second series when I was back in the UK over Christmas. First couple of episodes weren't as funny, but the rest were Karl at his best. Great show. Think they've probably exhausted it now though. 3rd season might be a bit too much of the same thing.

 

I've just got into the 2nd series.

Slow down and I'll catch you up and we can jerk off together over series 4 onwards.

 

Sorry Fitz, but comparing the Beatles to FT is bull. The Beatles were like Einstein, changing the way people felt about music. FT was simply a well loved sitcom amongst dozens of others before and at the same time. It wasn't the first to do anything, as far as I can see. I can see things like Hancock's Half Hour and Sykes. Not that funny but influenced everything thereafter.

 

Can't stand Merchant and Gervais' giggling nonsense, but Pilkington is a savant.

On the plane home, finally decided to give Curb another try after never liking it the first time around. Now finding it very funny, if annoying with the trumpet music in the background.

 

I'm with you on the other two, but give them credit for revealing The Karl to us all. They're prophets. Gervais is hosting the Golden Globes tonight so I can't seem to get away from him.

Now on the Beatles and Fawlty Towers thing, I'm actually comparing naysayer's reactions. That said, Basil Fawlty is up there with Homer Simpson in the pantheon of sitcom leadmen. Cheers in the early years is basically an American ripoff of the convoluted plots, and that is easily one of the most successful sitcoms ever, if not one of my all time least favorites.

 

I love Cheers.

 

Anyone watch Hustle?

 

Yeah, absolutely awful acting.. but enjoy it. Always a clever ending, albeit perhaps a bit obvious.
