Daughter in Liverpool says it's banging all over the city. Would have liked to be there but they ****ed us over on tickets. Already scared by the Israeli entry.

Sweden will host on the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning.

Expect to hear a lot of them !

Wouldn't mind nailing the Swede myself.

And by universally you mean by ourselves too, because our entry was bloody awful! Probably the worst vocals of the night, a few times the mic was by her waist when the backing track was still playing her lines...

What an embarrassment after Sam Ryder last year! Selectors must've been told to make sure we don't host again

It was certainly the worst performance, but not the worst song.

I found the winner rather underwhelming, well performed but a bit dull.

Finland would have been my choice, and it was clearly the choice of the crowd.

Finland was the public winner by a country mile, but as usual the inept jury voting meant we got the winner they wanted for the 50th show. On the shoutbox last night I don't think there was a single one of us that had Sweden as the best entry, which was also reflected in the UK public vote.

Great show and event in general, shame the wrong song won it, again.

Seems Sweden were the favourites so maybe voting on reputation?

There are a few caveats to the Sweden win:

Firstly, her vocals were off last night, however the Jury show is on the Friday night - for all we know, her vocals may have been better and that's reflected in the scoring. I would say the oppositie could be the case for Finland, but his song wasn't about vocals so I doubt it'd matter!

Secondly, Sweden was between Spain and Albania (17th and 22nd) so would stand out amongst bad songs either side. Whereas Finland was between Estonia and Czechia (8th and 10th), which is a tougher pairing.

Thirdly, it depends how important the jury consider the staging and visual effects. The public/audience will almost always put entertainment first, so a fun song like Finland's will be most popular, but unless the staging is incredible (like Mans Zermerlow - Heroes) it's largely ignored. Whereas the juries seem to rate fancy staging highly, but entertainment lower.

For me I actually had Finland down as the best performance on the night, but I can see how/why Sweden won. It was also interesting to see how badly some of the songs that went down well in the arena just didn't translate on tv and in the public vote. Australia, Austria, Slovenia and Belgium were so popular live but were flat on tv.

The most gobsmacking decision of the night was to represent Liverpool’s musical heritage, not by anything by the Beatles as a group or Paul McCartney at all or any Liverpool’s other great acts, but instead by performing numbers from Atomic Kitten and Mel C.

    What the actual ****?

I agree. Sam Ryder put out a belting song, and we all know U.K. actually really won it last year.

I thought you guys had turned the corner and were taking Eurovision seriously. I needn’t have worried, as last night was one of the worst songs I’ve seen from the U.K.. Scooch was better than that.

Why put that song through when you were hosting the event? The selectors should all be fired. It must have been a major humiliation for those who were there, being the joke act of the night.

The thing is, I can see that song we released being a good Eurovision song if it came from somewhere like Belgium. I feel we played it too safe with Mate Miller.

I suspect we Lovely Horsed it. BBC happy to host for Ukraine but not 2 years in a row.

It was a very ordinary song, with nothing memorable, sung by a charmless woman badly. It deserved its finish.

There were some fairly respectable names banded about before selection, such as Freya Ridings and Rina Sawayama, both of whom were interested in representing the UK. Instead we got that mess. Clearly we didn't want to risk it.

What I also liked about it being hosted in the UK was the crowd reaction to the obvious block voting. Then the over aggressive host snarling we're all friends here. How did she get the gig?

Mrs K and I were just discussing this.

Didn’t Michael Jackson buy the rights to the Beatles back catalogue? Maybe it wasn’t deemed worth the hassle/money. They did play Imagine, of course.

I thought she was quite good overall, although I had no idea who she was when she was selected. Though that exchange did seem a bit ott.

iirc, Beatles stuff is both expensive, and also requires 'active permission' processes.
Was always amazed Heartbeat could afford to use so much Fabs gear.
mind you, in those days, ITV still had money to burn.

Horrible androgynous monster and a caterwauling performance of a dreadful slab of eurosh*te.

Heh heh, still the most telling verdict i have seen.
    Literally true too, no?

    yet still a good show...

football fans are especially well placed to appreciate the concept of somehow enjoying watching utter shi*te 'in the moment'

how many dismal goalless away draws have we staggered out of, pleased as punch with the backs-to-wall point, yet never wanted to relive a moment...

That is why i ended up at a Patti Smith gig.
Her limbs seemed to be extended and undulating like waves; eyes like fireballs.

    Still sounded sh*t though
