If you pick out any other pattern - every other number, every 3 numbers, a number, then the next number, then two numbers up, then 3 and so on - I bet that these have roughly the same occurance as consecutive numbers.

It's simple really. 1,2,3,4,5,6 might never have been the lottery numbers, but neither have any of several million other combinations.

If you are going to play the lottery, any 6 numbers has EXACTLY the same chance of coming up. In fact, it pays to choose numbers which are not going to be popular suggestions, as, if you do win, you have a lower chance of sharing with other winners. For example, there are thousands of people who play 1-6 every week, so steer well clear. Similarly, most people play birthday dates, so numbers 1-31 and especially 1-12 will all be really popular.

Also, number 7 is really popular - don't pick it.

So go for unpopular numbers, over 31 and consecutive, but not 1-6 or, probably, 43-49.

Then why moog, does my intellect say that 4,7,12,32,37,42 are indeed more likely to come up than 1,2,3,4,5,6?

Surely if everybody followed that logic mood, then the unpopular numbers would also be incredibly popular? So we ought to pick 7 because everybody is thinking oh don't pick 7!

Is it just part of us being superstitious beings that we believe random numbers are more likely than sequences.

It's because you are ignoring unarguable fact.

  5. simms

But if I went with unarguable fact, I'd be ignoring my emotion and naturalistic tendencies.

When playing a game of random chance, there is no place for emotion or naturalistic tendencies.

But there is always place for emotion and naturalistic tendencies!

Every decision we make is based on them.

Coke or pepsi... we go with what we feel is tastier.

Same applies to gambling. It's called cognitive bias.
