Who will start in place of Chambers tomorrow at Liverpool?

I would have to say Mariappa. Doyley as much as i like the bloke is clearly not upto Premiership standard and this is down to mainly his distribution! Mariappa has shown me in every game he's played that he can use the ball well and is very composed! He's going to be a great defender and i think it's a great opportunity for him to prove his worth!

It is true Mariappa will be a decent player and can only gain experience to improve by playing against the best.

Mariappa all the way Doyley all he does when he gets it is punt it and most of the time it goes to the other team so i say Mariappa!

To be fair a lot of our players do that although actually I do think Doyley hasn't been so good at defending against stronger and better opposition this season.

An example of the many Championship quality players in our squad that don't make the step up.

I have to be honest and say I don't rate Mariappa as highly as some do, I haven't seen anything to suggest he will be a top quality defender. But then again I've seen nothing to suggest he's utter ***** either.

I'd give him the nod over Doyley though, Lloyd isn't the same player as last season.

    I didn't say he was perfect. Don't forget he's only 19.

i know but do you honestly think he was our best player? overall he was ok but for the 2nd goal, he clearance was attrocious. imo our best player was either bouazza or ben foster.

Mariappa wasn't at fault for the second! I think you need to look at Stewart's dallying on the ball for the real culprit...or Gav for not hurling the damn thing into the box towards Shittu!

From the account of the game i've recieved Mariappa was the best outfield Watford player on the pitch!

It is interesting all the press go on about Young being our best player all season etc yet people like Bouazza rarely seem to get noticed by the general media when their performances have been just as good.

Played very well yesterday but dreadful clearance for the 2nd goal.

He was excellent, very calm on the ball and he had great composure for a 19 year old playing at Anfield.

he made a decent run and passed to smith who crossed in for Youngs header which got tipped over the bar! Did anyone else notice stewart defending for the second goal with only one boot on? The other one was at the other end of the pitch!

How exactly was he at fault? What about Stewart who (a) got caught stupidly in position up the pitch (b) got out-paced by the person he was supposed to be marking and then (and this is the coup de grace is my mind) (c) fell over for no good reason to allow a simple lay-off to Alonso. The bloke is a liability.

I thought Marriappa played as well as could be expected for a lad of 19 playing at Anfield, with under 10 first team appearances to his name.

Agreed. With the way he played we now have 2 good right backs. JC and AM.

Our centre backs very rarely let us down. A good stable left back signed in January and our defence is sorted, (inc. GKs).

From what I have seen Jordan Stewart had an absolute nightmare yesterday. The words bambi on ice spring to mind for the second goal!

absolute nightmare. He wasn't that bad. He plays well for 88 mins, unfortunately the 2 min lapse is when we concede.

Played well? He embarassed himself by rolling on the floor when Pennant brushed his face, his distribution was (and always has been) abysmal, he was arguably the player most at fault for the second goal and his delivery from corners was a waste of time. Great game for Jordan!

Let's criticise him. Take away any confidence he was. And bring in our other superb left back for Boxing Day.

What a silly come back that is - so can you highlight anything he's done really right over the past season and a half? Maybe a man of the match performance, a notable tackle, assist or goal? Because I can think of several Stewart howlers in that time. Maybe you can name something right he did yesterday?

Some of our players have peaked their potential by playing in the Premiership - they're slogging their guts out and it's like running in treacle. However hard they try we'll never really progress. But Stewart is different. He looked out of his depth in the Championship and it is laughable that he is our first choice left back in the Premiership. I know Leicester fans who couldn't stop smiling when we signed him. He is exempt from any sympathy I might feel for our other players who are not up to the task but are still trying. Stewart is a mug and if Aidy doesn't sign a new left back in January it'll be an absolute scandal.

Tell you what, why don't we just turn a blind eye and pretend it's all ok, eh?

    That solves nothing.

I'm not the manager but if AB was that concerned with his quality we would have brought in a replacement.

AB must think that Stewart is doing a better job than Powell is capable of.

Nobody's denying he isn't slow but his experience and positioning makes up for this and restricts the attacker from beating him too easily.

Powell is the type of player we need in our side at the moment, somebody with premiership experience and that can steady the ship and be reliable.
