A bit of a random one this, but he's just been appointed head coach for the New Zealand national team. Makes me feel very old, as I remember him as a young kid breaking through to the first team. New Zealand appoint Darren Bazeley as new coach as they target 2026 World Cup | Daily Mail Online
Best of luck to him. A good player for us and well liked by the fanbase. Not going to lie I had a bit of a crush on him back then too.
If he doesn't get New Zealand to the world cup finals he needs shooting. Oceania now have one direct entry and the next best country is either Fiji or the Solomon Islands who have about two full time professionals between them.
Yes an exciting attacking player, but I was disappointed when he decided to leave for Wolves and stay in the champ for the money, rather than stick with us in the prem. A decision which resulted in us having to put up with Des Lyttle for a season....
Have to say you what here!! He was a great dribbler but his crossing was poor you were in more danger behind the goal than in the box! Was gutted when he left mind! Southend away was some performance
That rings a bell. We always used to lose to them in the Anglo-Italian cup so a win made a nice change.
Not from what I recall, but was many years ago now. I always remember him being brilliant technically and being able to cross a ball.
Correct ! http://watford.fcdb.info/index.php?page=matches Kevin Miller Darren Bazeley Nigel Gibbs Gerard Lavin Colin Foster Keith Millen Andy Hessenthaler Derek Payne Gary Porter Craig Ramage Nigel Jemson Match type: Football League Division 1 Location: Away (Roots Hall) Season: 1994/95 Match 29 Res: 4-0 Win Manager: Glenn Roeder Att: 4,914
Then Peter Kennedy got one a few seasons later ! One time I went we let a late equaliser in after leading for ages. I mean it was the season we got relegated.
Scumbag! Sacked us off to go play for Wolves after GT got us promoted to the PL in 1998/99. Then Des Lyttle was his replacement. The stuff of nightmares. Good player though.
I saw the Bazeley and Kennedy hatricks. And the ke rry Dixon 'disagreement' among many entertaining trips to Roots Hall
Me too. It’s amazing to remember how often we played them in the second and third tiers, but only once more in the last 25 years. Sad to see them in trouble out of the league as well.
I saw them last season - playing a league match at Wealdstone! So many of the teams that fans of our vintage grew up watching Watford play have gone the same way.
Great away day. Went once with my brother and my dad gave our tickets to Kenny Jackett's mum and dad, so we got smuggled in with the youth team, who'd had a game nearby in the morning. We were walked around the pitch towards the watford end, whereupon the Hornets faithful started changing 'who are ya!' Some of the confused teenagers responded 'Err we're your youth team!' We won 4-0
With the new 48 team format, New Zealand are basically guaranteed to qualify now aren't they? (Not clicking the link lol)
The first two goal scorers for NZ, in the the Oceania qualification final, have an average age of 35.5 and the third scorer plays in the Austrian second division. New Caledonia, who NZ beat, can still qualify though the play-offs but won't.
Palau are not even FIFA affiliated lol, Tahiti (who despite the name represent the entirety of French Polynesia once beat them at an OFC Championship to win a place at the Confederations Cup where they lost 10-0 to Spain, but to give them some sliver of patronising Pep-style praise, they did go for it and didn’t just shut up shop entirely like the smaller teams in European qualifiers do
