‘Sure to be in demand’ I dare say we sat around all window waiting for someone to take him and probably had an agreement he could walk the following day if no one came in. Hardly suggests he’s in demand though!
I seem to remember hornetboy1 thinking it was the signing of the century when he came to us. ***** LOL.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ford-allow-Danny-Welbeck-leave-club-free.html 100k a week. ******* lol. Deeney, Gray and Welbeck on nearly 300k a week of wages between them. Imagine thinking those at the top actually have a scooby how to run a football club.
A slight exaggeration, but yes, I did think he was a brilliant signing for us. I got that one wrong. Happy for people to gloat about it, as that's the forum way. But it's only turned out to be bad signing because of this decision to release him on a free. Had they kept him on, I'd still have backed it as a very good signing.
I thought it was a good signing too to be honest. We have had very few players in our history that could have scored that overhead kick last season.
I think you've posted this on the wrong site. Probably mixing up with your "Top 10 animals to sleep with" entry.
At the time, i think his signing was a gamble well worth taking. Relegation means that we cant afford to have him hanging around if he is not going to contribute. I think his deal was something like £70K a week if fit and available, £20K if injured and not available. The sort of deal a lower half Premier League team i am sure will emulate, once there is no fee to pay.
If those were the terms I suspect he would still be here. Two papers are reporting his wages were considerably higher than that and that is why he has been allowed to go on a free.
I can’t help but feel disdain for Welbeck. He was paid way too much, just because he’s well known having played for Man U and Arsenal. He was nothing special at all talent-wise. Let’s not pretend he looked a cut above whenever he played; Joao Pedro’s already displayed more ability imo. We knew he’s constantly injured, which isn’t his fault, but then we suffer relegation and he thinks he too good for us. Even now when no club has shown interest in signing him he still has the temerity to cancel his contract and seek a move. You’re not that good Danny, get over it. If we paid off the rest of his wages for him to leave then those in charge really are clueless. Let him rot in the reserves, it’s a much funnier way to burn a few mil.
To be fair, I won't miss any of them, for various reasons. I will he unhappy if/when we don't sign anyone else and end up reliant on Murray, Deeney, Gray and Perica for goals.
Exactly. We've obviously been calling round trying to offload him for a fee, but been utterly unable to find a buyer. The fact that we have several players like this, who for various reasons we can neither shift, who aren't good enough for us and who we can't afford, is down to the profligate policies over contracts during the past two seasons.
Should have played instead of Deeney for quite a few games last season. Thought he tried when he did play and was quite effective. However, not exactly a big loss now and probably the best move all round. Old man Murray will fire us to promotion anyway. That overhead kick was very nice.
I expect he has had interest, but as no on wants to pay for him, we're letting him go now so he can get a contract elsewhere. I doubt we're paying him much to go at all. He stands to get more money elsewhere, so we're doing him a favour by releasing him to an extent.
I did say ‘if’ but I accept it wasn’t really what I intended. I mean it as if he was looking for a way out, given the fact he’s offered us next to nothing, then good riddance. I accept the attitude of Deulofeu, Capoue, Pereyra - players who have given us moments and time. I accept the attitude of Estupinan and Suarez as they saw themselves as nothing more than trade commodities with no attachment to the club and acted as such. But players like Welbeck, nah. Not having it. As I’ve read elsewhere, you’d think he’s want to take a sensible wage, get his head down and produce consistently for a club that gave him another chance - but nah, wanted a way out without ever earning it. Not sad to see him go one bit.
I thought he was on a earn as you play basis. 25k if he didn't play 50k if he played 75k if he played and scored
That was by WD18 last year. Never saw that reported elsewhere and it wouldn't make sense for Welbeck to accept it. This £100k makes a lot more sense. https://twitter.com/WD18Fans/status/1159087176182849536 - This was it
