Sod the respiratory illnesses, as long as they keep the viral microchips out I'm sticking with mine.

My wife's cousin died of Covid over the weekend. That's the second family member we've lost to the outbreak.

He was an alcoholic so it seems likely there was a laundry list of pre-existing conditions involved here.

Can anyone give me a logical explanation as to why Wales is closing pubs and cafe's etc. at 18:00 from Friday and banning pubs from selling alcohol, on the back of 3 deaths and 802 cases today?

Their population is supposedly 3.15m, so that's:

    - 0.000095% of their population to die from Covid today

    - 0.025% of their population tested as positive today

I'm no expert and I am basically just taking these figures at face value, but introducing extra restrictions with those numbers seems bizarre?

For those considering what to do for Christmas, a cautionary tale. Two siblings at my daughter’s school have tested positive for Covid, with very mild symptoms. Before they realised they had it, they saw their grandfather who subsequently contracted the disease and died last week. I had already changed my plans to see my dad and his wife with the kids - we were going to go over to his house on the 21st for lunch, but have changed it to meeting up for a socially-distanced coffee outside, as I was getting nervous about the kids spending time with him inside so soon after breaking up from school. This just reinforces my view that it’s the best thing to do and that mixing the old with school age kids just isn’t a good idea at the moment.

I assume they feel that that level of cases each day is too high with the Christmas period on the horizon.

They'll want to get it as low as possible (within reason) before people start mixing at Christmas.

All these different rules are so confusing I just don't know what to do.

But thinking about it I don't live in Wales so why does it matter, if I just check on what the rules are where I live it is not confusing at all.

    Exponential growth.

Doesn't matter how low the numbers are if they are increasing too quickly, it means your current restrictions are causing exponential growth and you will need to change them later

Seems you’re not alone. A group of 6 of us were planning on going out for dinner on Saturday, to celebrate the end of lockdown - naively thinking we would return to Tier 1. Today I’ve been trying to see if there’s any way we could still do it, by sitting “outside” in one of the marquees/outside seating areas that are popping up outside various pubs around here. I spoke to 3 places - one said they’ve put up a fully covered, heated “barn” in their garden. The landlord said they are categorising it as “outside” but not actively marketing it (because it quite obviously isn’t really an outside space). They have 7 tables of 6 and are happy to take bookings, as long as you’re within that number, no further questions asked. They are fully booked up to the 18th December! The second place I spoke to has put up a heated marquee and is taking bookings of up to 6 but the 6 have to be from no more than 3 households. The third pub is following the “rule of 6” in its outside space, which is usually heated and has surrounding covers that are closed in winter to keep it warm - doesn’t mind how many households the 6 is from but is taking the view it needs to have all the covers open so is warning “it will be cold”.
These three pubs are all within 10 minutes of one another and yet are all interpreting the rules differently!

I'm sitting here waiting for a CV19 test result to come through before flying to Dubai on Friday. Test yesterday, result today. It's a bit of a risk as we've paid for the holiday and positive test results can come from bits of old dead CV19 floating round the body, and we of course both had it March/April.

Shame the vehicles bringing it in from Belgium will get stuck at the ports while HMRC check their post-Brexit paperwork and then run out of fuel - causing their refrigeration systems to fail and rendering the vaccine unusable.

I've seen reports of concerns over people catching Covid-19 a second time, but for the most part I assumed it was faulty testing that accounted for it.

I now directly know someone who has caught it a second time. They got it back in March and recovered with no long term effects.

They just tested positive again last week and are symptomatic again. Given the gap between the March and December it doesn't look like faulty testing can be blamed.
