    BOSS HAS TARGETS IN MIND
Posted on: Tue 15 May 2007

AIDY Boothroyd has spoken about his plan to strengthen his squad in preparation of the start of the Hornets' league campaign in the Championship next season.

The Hornets' gaffer won't confirm names, but plenty of careful work behind the scenes has already taken place - although he has publicly pinpointed the positions he would like to improve.

Boothroyd said: "Yes I have in my mind who I'd like to sign - whether I get them or not is a different matter.

"This is because we're in a position now where we're not as attractive to potential signings as perhaps somebody who is going up.

"It was hard to get them in last year, so this year it is a different type of player that we've got to go for."

When the news was confirmed that the Golden Boys would be playing in the second tier of English football again next season, the work began almost immediately.

"I've started the process already, I've made a few calls and I've got a few meetings set up. The Chief Executive is making a few calls on my behalf as well so we're putting our feelers out.

"We've been watching for a while now in terms of trying to get organised for this season so it's not a mad rush to do it. We've got our targets and it's just a matter of knocking them down and getting them in one by one."

With Premiership football not being played at the Vic next year Boothroyd knows he'll have to work that bit harder to bring new people in but he believes the club is still an attractive proposition.

When asked what the main selling point is, he replied: "That we can bounce back, that we're a progressive club and that we can develop players.

"I will point out to clubs that you can loan players here, point to Ben Foster, and say to other clubs that you can loan players and you'll know that they come and develop.

"They'll get experience that they might not get in the reserves and I'll say we want to win and we're hungry.

"We're in a far better place that what we ever have been, despite relegation."

    Boothroyd

The Championship places a different sort of demand on squads with the most obvious being the increase in games.

The gaffer is keen to get in players who know the requirements at that level.

"We need some men, we need experienced guys who can play in the 46 game plus season, also we need young talent."

In terms of positions - the Yorkshire man is looking at developing three of four specific positions.

He added: "We need a goalkeeper and we need to look at bringing in a front player.

"I think we've got good players in wide positions but we need some depth there and possibly we might need a full-back at some point. We are looking at three or four positions really."

He has also admitted that there is money at his disposal and he knows he can go to his board.

"I've never been turned down yet by the board and the Chairman for money to go and buy the players.

"There is money there to spend, I haven't asked the Chairman and the board for a figure because I might want more than what I ask for. We're in a far healthier financial situation that what we've ever been in before, so there is money there to spend."

So basically Lee won't be our no. 1 next season, and he doesn't expect Priskin, Hendo and Hoskins to be able to partner Marlon well enough. He wants a right wing and I think the last bit means that Shittu will go so we'll need cover for that.

It makes life difficult - last year we couldn`t attract players because they thought we would be relegated.

This year it is difficult because we are not in the Premiership, but we don`t want championship players because if we do get promoted they will get us relegated.

Sounds as if 4 or 5 Prem. loan players is the only solution.

I see one flaw in what you've just said - you're assuming Marlon will be here / be fit / be in form. Fact is we need another top quality striker as a contingency (but who could still partner King in the best case scenario).

He doesn't say we need a c/b says we need a full back, that would suggest James Chambers or more likely Chris Powell (or both) aren't staying imo

That's true - my bad. I'll get me coat.

Makes more sense - a left back if I had anything to say.

We need to be able to choose from a collection of strikers with different qualities in the squad to suit the type, size and style of the opposition. That is how we will sustain goals throughout the season.

We were bloody lucky last season that Hendo and King were firing on all cylinders all season last time around. Let's not rely on luck again.
