I remember Ellington telling the press that he was like a car that ran on petrol, and Boothroyd was trying to run him on diesel. I think he had a point.

From a pound for pound perspective Sarr, Ellington and Gray are a million miles clear of anyone else.

Ellington was probably the biggest overall waste of money considering how long ago it was, how much money that was to us as a club and just how crap he was.

What Sarr did or didn’t do for us is irrelevant, pound for pound he is the biggest flop considering the overall impact his signing had on the club from a negative point of view. The idiotic argument of him helping us get promoted doesn’t change that fact, it was a ludicrous amount of money for us to spend for many different reasons. What we paid, and where the club ended up as a result make him the biggest flop.

If you ignore transfer fees and the impact those fees had on the club then of course we’ve bought many far, far worse players than any of the above three. Then the thread title would be, ‘worst players we’ve ever signed’.

    Sarr wasn't a flop.

    Just overpriced.

Ellington produced nothing. That's why he was a flop.

But that ignores the fact that Sarr was bought by the owner to make large profit on for the player trading model. You can’t just look at how he performed against his actual fee, but against how he performed against what he was meant to do for the club, and what he actually did for the club, by that measure he was a humongous flop.

But you can't compare Moralee to Sarr without dealing with 250k v 35m.

How are we defining 'biggest'? If it's in terms of tonnage, Danny Rose?

We obviously overpaid and he wasn't the kind of player we needed at the time but I don't think the way the club was run during his stay helped him either. God knows how many coaches he played under, 12 is it? We were just a complete mess so yes he didn't reach the level everybody hoped he would but there are other factors to take in to account. Ellington was just a fat waste of time

I have always maintained Isaac Success doesn't get nearly enough flak in these debates, over £10m for very very little

Ah but it wasn’t really £10m+. Shifting money from different pockets etc. He was our “£16m Camara”

In my time as a Watford fan it has to be Andre Gray.

Abysmal player, with an even worse personality.

19 goals in 113 is ****, especially when 5 of ‘em were scored in the Championship.

All that for a sum total of 18 million pound… and then released for nothing. Eurghhh

Sarr, Gray and Ellington & Success are all top of the list for overpriced and not very good. Cost about £70million in total as well - staggering waste of money.

I still cannot believe we paid £18M for Andre' Gray. Burnley, Brentford and Lootown fans were laughing, and probably still are.

And even if it were true (I mean he was important, but other players were just as important!), imagine a £30m player supposedly brought in to get you to the next level being heralded because he got you out of the Championship...

One of these things is not like the other (Success).

Thankfully most people in this thread have avoided falling in to that trap of counting him.

Although on a serious note, if we hadn't blown the whole kitty on Sarr, we might have been able to strengthen our defence with better than Dawson...
