I'm sure McGugan is just as happy as everyone else, afterall, he probably has a promotion clause within his contract!

It's so easy to overlook the people that played a part in our promotion.

He took the players through a tough pre-season and left us with 12 points from a possible 15, so he gave us the perfect platform to move on from. I think it's only right to give him a mention.

Nah not for me...we got promoted in spite of him...away games for Sannino were like Kryptonite to Superman...or reason and logic to the religious.

  8. It is your prerogative to decide what you like in the face of the facts, but it is futile for you to suggest that Beppe's run of four wins in five did not contribute to us now being a BPL team. His only losing league game coming against one of our main rivals, at their home, and with only ten men for all but two minutes of the match. His run also included one of the most battling and spirited wins I have ever seen from any team ever. If he had dropped any more points in that remarkable run, we would be looking at the playoffs now.

He apparently was too tough on some of the players, and according to the Watford Observer this put his future in doubt, yet when Slav came in, he immediately recognised the same issue, got tough with them, and got praise for doing so. Beppe left behind him a team fit and ready for the rest of the season, and who continued to perform under two subsequent manager who never got the chance to imprint themselves on the team, leaving them to be Beppe's team, until Slav came along, and that is the only time in the season when we could be described to have wobbled, as the team got used to a new manager that was actually able to assert himself.

It is fair for you to have whatever opinion you like, but it is not fair for you to deny that the facts are what they are without being challenged.

Agreed it's a very short sighted policy.

I'd happily see Beppe back for a visit next year.

Try listening to the Deeney interview on FTRE. He is very complimentary about Beppe and says a major factor in our improved defence under Slav is due to the pre season fitmess and tactical drilling Beppe instilled.

I always argued he wouldn't be the man to take us up and events have proved me right BUT he deserves a huge thanks for stabilising us, for his work on pre season fitness that no doubt played a big part in finishing the season as the league's most in-form side and for the good start we made to this campaign. Promotion was sealed over the last few matches but it wasn't only won because of the last few matches..the foundations for our success started to be laid a fair while ago and Beppe will always be part of that. Thank You Beppe. You are always welcome at our club.

I have heard it and I don't see your point. It's all perspective, we still conceded late goals due to his 'shut up shop' mentality but weren't good enough to maintain a lead and he didn't last long at Catania.

I think you're undervaluing the influence of Dean Austen.

    Aye, with you on this
4 out of 5 with that squad could have happened to many managers. The back end of last season was a better read.
Will give him credit for getting them in better shape pre season mind.

I think he watched the Brighton game and finally saw his face on that pitch.

I think people are overvaluing Austin.

The fact our upturn in form completely coincided with his arrival tells me that it was probably just a coincidence. There is no way a coach coming into a club can make an instant impact on a team because it takes time for their methods to bed in. As a result, I think he just happened to arrive right as Joka's methods were bearing fruit.

Note that I'm not saying he's done a bad job, simply that I feel people place far too much of the credit for our upturn in form on his shoulders.

Watson I can at least understand, since he directly influences what unfolds on the pitch.

Completely and utterly disagree...and actually dumbfounded by that comment.

  18. Arakel

    Really?

So you believe he came in and telepathically communicated weeks worth of training in an instant, allowing our form to take an immediate upturn commencing with a 5-0 win at Charlton 2 days later?

Blimey. I hope we're paying him a fat wad then, because that's quite a skill to have. Most other clubs require weeks to bed new training methods in.

Back to the original point, I'd be happy with Sannino attending but certainly nothing like walking around the pitch or some special mention.

It'd be like inviting your ex into the marital bed on your wedding night just because you stayed friends after a clean break up.

    Weird.

I'd guess we maybe got a double whammy from Austin - his own abilities, methods etc and improving the communication of joka's wishes to the players.

Fact: it takes weeks for new training methods to take effect. 2 days is not enough time. It took weeks under Zola until we started to fire properly. It took weeks under Beppe, something he mentioned up front when he first came into the club. It took weeks under Dyche. No coach, no matter how talented, can come in and magic bullet a club's issues.

Fact: Austin arrived on the 15th January, two days before our great run of form started with a 5-0 over Charlton on the 17th.

Fact: Joka excluded the "disruptive four" some time before the 16th, when it was reported in the Wobby.

If you think all of those facts point to Austin carrying a great deal of the responsibility for our upturn in form then I don't know what to tell you. His coaching methods wouldn't have started to bear fruit until weeks later. You absolutely cannot implement a change in coaching overnight.

Considering our next month saw 5 out of 6 wins with the single loss coming from the ludicrous sending off at Muff, the foundations were clearly in place long before he arrived and probably had everything to do with the removal of the toxic element of the dressing room.

Does he share credit for a great job done? Yes. So do all of the other coaches, but I don't see anyone lauding Martinez. Once again, a confusion of correlation with causation.

I didnt neccessarily express an opinion , I just re iterated what Deeney said in interview last week.

If you think you know more than Deeney does about the subject, then be my guest.

  29. Not really. If you suggest four wins in five matches is what you would have expected from many managers with this squad you are having a laugh. Suggests you would have expected that "many" managers could have acquired 110 points over the season. Bit silly really. Four wins out of five is damned good for any manager, and a positive contribution to any season.

Happens that it was Beppe that actually did get those twelve points for us, and because he did, he contributed to promotion this year, that fact is unarguable. I'm not absolutely convinced he would have got us automatic promotion, but I believe he was capable of it; I think the biggest thing against him was the language barrier, and that would have been very difficult to get over when things got tough; and I think it was his main reason for leaving. Sadly also, he did have the air of a dead man walking, and I don't think it would have made his life here any easier.

Funny, now that Deeney has come out and said what a good grounding Beppe's pre-season gave, that so many are sagely agreeing with him with big nods of their head; as I remember it, Beppe was being slated by most people for working the players too hard, and accused of loosing the team before the season even started; his detractors certainly made those points when suggesting he should go, and when they celebrated his passing. Now things are different though, aren't they? Not saying that was you, but just a passing thought.

I would love to see him at the game on Saturday, or in the park, as a guest of the club. I think it would be quite fitting; wouldn't be a case of crediting him for the promotion, just recognising they he had taken us as far as he felt he could, and that he had set us on the road.

I'd like to think Dean has had an influence because if he hasn't then why are we employing him?!

How big that influence is I don't think any of us can really say, because we are all supporters rather than directly seeing what goes on behind the scenes.

I'd like to think Rubén Martinez has had a positive impact too, and considering he gets a lot of stick at times when the likes of Loach and Bond made mistakes, worth a mention for Alec too because arguably our best player this season has been our keeper.

Far be it from me to stifle a good debate but ever since Saturday there's been a fair bit of negativity banded around about certain players, certain ex managers, certain other clubs who achieved promotion with us. We've just won promotion for heavens sake! This has been the best season we've all had the privilege of following for many years. Surely there doesn't always need to be a BUT on the end of every sentence :)

  31. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

I'm pretty sure that communication between Jokanovic and the players improved with Austin as opposed to him bringing in his own training methods. If I recall, that was a major reason for him appointing an English assistant coach in the first place.

So if, and it is an if, that's what happened, then Austin could have had an immediate impact which then translated to results.
