As many of you know my sons attends the SEND school St Luke's in Redbourn. They have planned to enter a sensory garden (St Luke's, part of the Blue Tangerine Federation, is a 'Rural' school with an emphasis on outdoor activities such as animal husbandry and horticulture) into the RHS Chelsea Flower Show - the frist two attempts were cancelled due to covid but they're going this year.

In their own words:

The Blue Tangerine Federation is one of the first Special Schools in Hertfordshire to appear in the discovery section of RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We are immensely proud to be showcasing ‘Plant Magic’, designed and created by Emilie Griffin (Horticulture Manager at St Luke’s School in Redbourn), with support from our very own Learning Outside the Classroom team and local businesses.

The Blue Tangerine Federation is a collaboration of Specialist and Special Educational Needs Schools who embrace learning outside the classroom and encourages the use of nature, animal care and horticulture as a therapeutic intervention. Experiencing the outdoors, caring for nature and helping to create new life helps our young people to feel a sense of calm, increases their energy levels and allows for self-regulation.

Exhibiting our accessible sensory garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show seemed like the perfect next step in proving to our young people that despite a mainstream world that expects conformity and can be challenging and difficult to navigate, anything is possible with the right support. Plus it has been a dream of Emilie’s since starting at The Federation in 2016. Now with the expansion of the LOTC (Learning Outside the Classroom) team and a positive approach to outdoor learning, this is finally happening!

From Monday 23rd May 2022, staff and students of the Federation will be showcasing an accessible sensory garden which combines wild flowers and cultivated plants to connect the roots between humans and plants. We have used recycled materials where we can and grown most of the plants ourselves, at St Luke’s School.

As the community is so important to us, we wanted to celebrate this garden and everything it stands for, with them, here in Hertfordshire. We have managed to organise amazing support to help us transport the garden overnight on Saturday 28th May from Chelsea to Hertfordshire County Show, ready to showcase to our local community on Sunday 29th May. This incredible feat will help us to promote the ability in disability to our local community. The relationship with our community form an essential aspect of introducing our pupils to work-related learning, synchronising out community’s improving understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disability.

What a fabulous idea and achievement by the school and its pupils. I absolutely love their philosophy too. Thank you for sharing this. I wish the school every success with its display; it sounds like a fantastic place and I hope your son is really happy there.
