My suspicion is that this was a case of both WFC and Hughes' agent digging their heels in and not negotiating properly. I don't think Hughes had any intention to leave but was told not to accept the contract he was offered. Of course he presumably had the option to take matters into his own hands and ignore the advice but it seems like he took a back seat.

Wasn't it reported that there was a quite reasonable release clause offered in the event of relegation too meaning that in reality he would never have had to take the 50% cut?

I suspect that in the case of Hughes and Chalobah something else was at play. Either some lingering annoyance over bonuses like there was after the cup final or a lack of faith in Xisco's coaching.

From a purely financial sense (which let's face it, is the motivation that most of us ascribe to footballers) neither decision makes any sense at all.

May have been told they wouldn’t be automatic first teamers due to planned signings ?

Perhaps, although in fairness, having got injured when we got relegated last, he may have been wary about getting injured again and missing the boat

Any Watford player making a massive career choice based on their feelings towards the current Head Coach is an absolute moron, for obvious reasons.

Are you sure Chalobah was offered 5 years on similar terms? He was on a pretty big wage.

A 5 year contract with a relegation clause for Hughes meant he could've been getting 'underpaid' for 4 years if we went down and didnt come back. 3 year contract at Palace means he can leave on a free at age 29 with a fat signing on fee and is guaranteed a PL salary for 3 years til then. It's a no brainer.

Who told you Deeney has taken a big pay cut? Sounds like unlikely behaviour from 'the big man'!!

Now I believe u about your IQ. I mean, alternating between language and mathematical symbols that's some feat. How do you do it? Is it learned intelligence or innate?? Quite remarkable! Good to have u on the forum professor. I feel quite unworthy in compariaon with my sole qualification being for knitting. I often struggle to work out how to turn on my mobile phone and it took me nearly a decade to realise my name is Moosegasm not Mousegarnish. I stand back in total awe at your intellectual genius!

The Hughes impasse was reported as being due to the relegation clause though.

Your use of emojis is just so on point, how do you do that? It's incredible. Once every 2 or 3 generations there appears a mind so great that it gives the human race the potential to develop in unimaginable ways. It's becoming increasingly clear to the people of Hertfordshire that you are that mind. We await your direction, leadership and guidance with bated breath. Is there even a number by which your IQ can be measured?

This has run its' course MG. I took the p*** out of you (as did others) over your obsession with your and your friend's "body count" and equated that obsession to people having a low IQ. I can see I touched a nerve and I'm sorry but let's not bore the good people of WfcForums to death........ :)

I was interacting with u to assess your intelligence as I cant remember reading any of your posts that weren't personal attacks on me. I'm not stupid enough to think I can fully evaluate your intelligence solely based on your posts here and it may be that you have some kind of numerate/mathematical intelligence that isnt apparant here. However, based on our interactions I'd say u are condescending rather than intelligent with very little capacity to think outside the box and under developed general analytical skills. However, I accept you may have developed analytical skills in a specific field that I'm not aware of, possibly relating to your profession. Out of interest how many university professors have u shagged?

Dunno why you would think that. If i was in a job where i had major differences with my boss I'd get another job.

For most industries and workplaces that'd probably be the right choice. At Watford the chances are if you around for a few months the problem fixes itself.

Pound for pound the worst player to ever play for us, closely run by Isaac Success. Fact.

His signing, even now, has impacted our ability to bring in a decent striker or strengthen the team in other much needed areas.

An absolutely dreadful signing by any measure, totally indefensible by anyone but you.

Gray cost £18m though, double our entire summer transfer spend, and for that we got players like Rose, Dennis, King and Sissoko though the door and we could even waste half of it on a player who doesn’t play.

We also paid him about £15m in wages (and we’re probably still paying him something) while he was here. Just let that sink in when comparing to players like Jamie Moralee etc. In terms of pound for pound value.

Or - Chalobah, Hughes, Wilmot (and others) had major reservations about staying at a club that had Xisco has head coach in the PL? It’s certainly something I’ve been told.

To be honest, I doubt that would have been a major impact on their decision. They would have known Munoz wouldn't have been around for too long.

But surely your outlook there would bleed into a different possibility - that they were fed up of being at a club that changes head coach so regularly and felt it was impeding their progression.

  34. RS2

The club is rotten to the core, no wonder players don't want to stay even when offered more money. Has anyone else heard a rumour about promotion bonuses not being paid? I heard it a few months ago, not sure if it's been resolved now or even if it's true.

No.....I don't think that had any bearing at all. In the case of Hughes and Chalobah they were offered very good/fair deals, but their agents wanted to negotiate. Watford took a "take it or leave it" stance, which put their noses out of joint. They decided to leave it and look for a better option. This put the board's nose out of joint, so they cut them loose and looked for replacements. Once this happened, there was no way back for Hughes or Chalobah. Neither found better deals and both have screwed over their careers somewhat. No one was really a winner in any of this, but if I was to pick a side to fall on, I'd actually back the board's decision not to let players dictate.

With Wilmot I think it was a little different. He just wanted to play, and wasn't getting first team football. That was the motivator for him and why he wanted to go. With Chalobah and Hughes it was purely about the terms of the contract, which I think were very good in Hughes' case and very fair for Chalobah. Neither have bettered themselves, so the grass wasn't greener. They both made the mistake of believing they were better or more vital to the club than the actually were.
