Adrian Boothroyd has stated that it will take a sizeable offer to prise Ashley Young away from Watford.

Young has made a major splash in his first season in the Premiership and reports suggest a clutch of clubs are set to battle for his signature in January.

Boothroyd is aware that it will be tough to retain the services of the talented winger, but has warned that Watford will not let him leave for a pittance.

"You have to presume other people are in Ashley's ear because I am not with him for 24 hours a day," conceded Boothroyd.

"Has he told me other people have had a word with him? He has. Ashley has, on occasion, told me things that, perhaps, other players would not tell their managers.

"He has not mentioned any names, and I do not ask him the question.

"But if he comes to me and says he would like to go, we would have to get an awful lot of money for that to happen."

As someone stated elsewhere - we won't sell Ash unless he wants to go. So it won't be Spurs or Wet Spam, it'll be Arse (as he is a gooner), Liverpool or maybe - just maybe Newcastle where he could be part of reconstructing the team.

Ash seems levelheaded enough not to sign somewhere where he wouldn't get time on pitch, to continue his development so how many clubs can afford an 8 mio Ash AND have room in the side for him?

not as much as last season.
i reckon 10 million - but im assuming that no one is for sale who could replace him.
we are in a good position - we dont need to sell, we want him to stay, he wants to stay, aidy and ash talk.

again though the headline is misleading - aidy didnt say anything about even considering slleing him - sky made that assumption

Exactly! No one who could remotely replace Ash is available - and even if they were - chances would be they'd reject a transfer to Watford.

If we do sell Ash, I don't think the money should be spent on new players. Our current crop is fine - except for the addition of a top striker (*who we can afford without money from Ash) and maybe a left back.

My honest opinion is that we'll find it difficult to attract any player who would strengthen the team significantly.

    Let's play a little game.

Name a current player around the starting 11 and a replacement that's much better that would join us.

    Eg.

Damien Francis -> Claus Jensen (not that he'd join)...

So you start a game, give the rules, then break them straight away.

God give me strength, when is school back?

stewart -> robbo is the only one i can think of - but west brom want lots +hesn fairly old therfore not worth it

keep young - we can do ****** all with the money anyway

it was a game to prove a point - and he couldnt think of anyone so had to give an example which wasnt very good

Surely then the game is flawed before it starts, i am off to start a thread about certain people. it may help a few on here.

I had to break the rules as I could not think of a single attacking midfielder I'd like us to get who'd join us.

A loan move would involve paying his wages which i can garuantee would be sky high, and i'm not talking Collins John sky high either.

AIDY: SPLASH THE CASH FOR £9M ASH
WATFORD have told Aston Villa it will cost at least £9million to prise Ashley Young away from Vicarage Road.

Martin O'Neill had a £6.9m offer turned down last week, while five other sides have also been snubbed by Hornets boss Aidy Boothroyd.

Villa are expected to come back with a new offer for the 21-year-old, but will be challenged by Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Boothroyd still hopes to hold on to his star, saying: "His heart and mind are here - £7m is not enough. Ash makes goals from all over the pitch."

Watford will make Fulham striker Collins John a new offer.

    I think the important part there is AT LEAST £9 million:) :) :) :) :) :) :)

£9 million would sign us 3 good players - whether we could afford there wages is another question.:(

He's gone from 5 to 9 in 3 days or so. I think he'll stay unless Arse comes in for him. I can't see him moving and I can't see him joining any other London Club.
