we, along with Charlton, Wolves and Sheff Utd, are chasing Aaron Mclean from Peterborough.

The 25-year-old striker banged in 33 goals in all competitions last season as Posh won promotion to League One under the stewardship of Darren Ferguson, earning admiring glances from a number of Championship clubs in the process.
Fry admits his star man wants to quit London Road, but will only be allowed to do so if Peterborough receive a suitable offer of £5million.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has turned his attention to McLean after missing out on Burnley's Kyle Lafferty to Rangers and has already had two offers turned down.
Posh chairman Fry told the Express and Star: "I've told Mick McCarthy twice and Jez Moxey at the chairmen's meeting last week the price is £5m - £3m straight away plus a sell-on and £2m when you get to the Premier League, because if you get Aaron, that's where he'll take you.
"Mick says there's no way we'll get that, but that's the price. It doesn't matter that his best mate is Michael Kightly or he wants to play for Wolves, that's the price.
"We've had two bids from Wolves of £1m and £1.5m and turned them both down.
"I've heard they are preparing a third offer but we haven't heard anything.
"Steve Morgan has put £30m into the club - well then spend it, take a gamble."
Fry also revealed the club has received offers from other clubs, with the likes of Charlton, Watford and Sheffield United all said to be interested.
"There's been interest from six other clubs, and we've had higher bids than Wolves have offered," Fry said.
"We understand he wants to go, but he won't go for anything less than we've said. If Wolves want him, they have to pay the money.
"My chairman bought him to get us to the Championship.
"Aaron's a prolific goalscorer and if he gets us into the Championship, he'll be worth £7m, £8m, £9m."

Not worth £5,000,000 for one season, although it's potential you're paying for I guess.

Would be an excellent signing IMO! He's done very well at Peterborough and could be the type of striker we need, he's a bit of a 'fox-in-the-box' if you ask me.

£5m if he was under 20, definatly not 25.

Well I guess it's £5,000,000 we SHOULD have!

It's a bit of a gamble for someone who's ONLY scored goals at League Two level.

Izael McLeod didn't exactly set 'The Valley' alight this season, did he. :dismay:

If they wanted around the £2,000,000 mark, then it's a risk worth taking...but at £5,000,000 it's too much of a gamble.

That said though, he looks a good player from what i've seen...but how many times have people said Billy Sharpe, Will Hoskins, Izael Mcleod etc are 'good' players?!

It's just Barry Fry showing what an old hand he is at this transfer malarky. I have no doubt he'll go for £3m tops some time this summer, but only if the lad himself wants to move.

    £5million is a joke

    True.

Plus they're in a healthy financial position, so they won't obviously sell cheaply.

That said, i'm sure they'll want to get rid of him sooner rather than later if he's admitted he wants out.

I can't see Aidy bidding higher than £2,000,000 for him.

I also agree, Rich, that £3,000,000 will test their resolve, and would probably see Mclean moving on.

I don't know if this will have any affect, but Aidy and Fry are good mates from when Aidy played under him there.

Why would he be any better at this level than Will Hoskins?

You will all cream your pants at the prospect of signing him and then be booing and jeering the bloke after 3 months tops.

Exactly. Worth a punt at 500k or so, but we can't afford to be paying 2m+ on a one season wonder?

league 2 striker for 5 mil?????? Hoskins was banging them in in league 1, he is hardly coming on leaps and bounds. No way.

I totally agree with those saying we should leave him be for £3mil. £3mil is almost what we payed for Ellington and we want to go and spend that on someone from League 2.

Someone in my year at school is his cousin. He is saying he would like to move back with his family in West London (where I live). If we are interested that is a good sign.

Another lower league striker, who is grossly overpriced and wants to play for another club.

    Just what we need!

I expect Aidy has been after him for two or three years:]]

    Absolutely not.

    £5m?!?!

Who in God's name would pay that for somebody who has only scored in League One?

Too much money has meant that anybody who scores any amount of goals is the next big thing.

Lets hope to God we don't sign another Hoskins and spend our money WISELY.

No way we will pay any more than £2 million.

I know McLean got loads of goals but i am pretty sure he got most before christmas and that he actually ended up not a regular by the end of the season as he was not scoring regulary?

Barry Fry like Redknapp and Colin is the master of getting silly money for average players, fair play on him for bigging the lad up but he is a 500-750k player at most.

Nicky Maynard as mentioned in another thread is a much more viable option if we had the cash
