    Is this right?
Why couldnt we have waited for more money for DG10?
I mean it is not as if Ipswich were any good last year and how many did Wickham score in total? If its about potential then how come WB went for 1M? is Wickham worth 8 times that?

Why does every other team, with worse players, get offered far more money for players?

Young english players are over inflated on their prices so this actually makes sense. Just look at Henderson and Jones. We got good money for DG, even Dychey said so!

If young English players are overvalued then explain WB?

Probably because he is young and has potential whereas Graham may have been the top goal scorer in the championship this may not relate to the premierhip. I think we got a fair price for Graham considering none of the other team were prepared to spend more than what Swansea did.

Wickham is not worth that amount of money however, he does have potential but so did Buckley.....

Just show's the dire state the financial side of football.

But WB went to a champo club. Had a prem club come in I believe we'd have got more, but Buckley is in LEague 1 compared to Premiership standard Wickham.

When Wickham is reportedly wanted by Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man U, you can afford to hold at and demand big bucks!!

Also take into account Ipswich have no financial woes compared to us. Clubs take advantage of that. If we were Ipswich/ Reading/ Forest with DG in the team, we could have probably got more.

What is he 17 ? I have to say that he is every bit as good as Dean Ashton was at the same age.

Pace, power, good with both feet, this lad will be the real deal.

It might also be like the Walcott deal where Arsenal paid the £8m over 5 years ! and then tried to squirm out of it when Southampton went in to administration.

Danny was £3.5m up front and then a sell on clause.

Wickham will do better in the Premiership than Danny. Danny scored so many due to the supply he had, let's not forget how many sitters he has missed this year

Saints actually went cap in hand to Arsenal and asked them to pay up sooner than the agreed timeframe in return for a discounted fee.

To be fair, DG scores goals, but he doesn't have the pace, power or raw, dazzling skill which would make people believe he could one day be worth north of 10m.

He might be able to do alright on work rate and poaching, but I don't think any of us can expect him to one day play for England or a top Prem side.

And this Wickham guy is definetly going to play for England and be worth multimillions and is literally the bestest player ever?
Wow give us a lend of your crystal ball.
maybe he is worth more, maybe 8M isnt enough

I think the point here is that the price for Wickham reflects his current value and his potential value given that he is still a teenager. He is highly regarded and may be a star of the future though at his age to pay so much is, perhaps, a gamble.

Danny Graham meanwhile is 26 (in a couple of months) and could be regarded as the "finished article" and the amount he will improve over the next couple of years (if such things could be measured) is negligible.

I would have preferred a higher price for DG10 - something like £4.5-£5m and it would have been if "bigger" clubs than Swansea were interested but such clubs appear not to have been. Therefore, all things considered the price we got for him was a reasonable one.

As for Buckley he still had two years left on his contract so that had a bearing on the £1m Brighton paid. Good deal in my book.

If Sunderland are willing to pay that amount than he is worth it to them, he may keep them up in EPL if he performs to his ability.

  14. Ipswich don't have finances quite as ropey as ours, so they can afford to ask insane prices for players. See also: Leeds wanting £8mn to Snodgrass.

Exactly, DG will do well to have another season as good as the one he has just had.

THis is what Sunderland are betting on, yes, because it is more likely with Wickham, than DG, hence the different valuations.

Ipswich and Leeds don't need to and don't want to sell their best players whereas we HAVE to sell our best players to survive.

But Danny's a nice guy. Wickham is a complete ****. Therefore Danny is worth £15m and CW worth 2p.

    Ipswichs finances are incredibly perilous.

They have a debt of around 35 million. They dont own their ground (owned by the council) and they dont own the land their training ground is on.

They at the moment are relying on a bloke who isnt a fan putting in lots of money to try to achieve promotion to the premier league where he will be able to advertise his company on a grander scale and make money back.

They've done this for the past couple of seasons with an incredibly poor return on investment. The questions they must ask themselves are a) how long will Marcus Evans chuck money into the club and b) When Evans has enough who will buy the 35 million owed to Marcus Evans to buy out the club with no material assets.

8 million is paying for the potential of a young forward. Graham probably reached his maximum potential last season.

  21. I thought Evans was a fan?

Maybe, I didnt think so though and used to live there.

I thought he bought them because he cou;ld buy the debt on the cheap from Norwich Union and they would owe him more than he bought the debt for.

Same points are true. How long will he do it for? what will they do once he stops? They're finances are much worse than ours.

So we are a selling club and other clubs know that, so we get less money for our players so we have to sell more players (2 DGs for 1 Wickham) meaning we get even more of reputation for needing to sell, repeat ad infinitum. Can noone else see the Catch22 here?

Why dont we shut up about being a selling club and hold our nerve in the markets a little, could have waited til someone in the lower prem got desperate at christmas and then sold DG maybe.

There are enough diamonds in the world for every single person to have a cup full each yet they are as expensive as ****, sometimes prices can be fixed I think we are ****ing ourselves

Do you honestly think we had a chance of keeping DG until Christmas? Yes we are a selling club, and will be for many years yet. There is every chance that we are going to become a modern day Crewe Alex; have some great homegrown youngsters coming through, have a couple of good years out of them before they decide to have a crack at a higher level and we get a few quid for them. That is how it is.

It's been done to death on here. Some people, me included, thought £3.5m was about right and completing it early was logical so we could prepare for next season, others felt we should have held out for more.

Either way it is done and dusted.

Im really talking about the whole ethos rather than DG10.
If we keep with the mantra "we are a selling club" then we will just accept any old bid for anyone.

  29. wfcthroughandthrough

    wfcthroughandthrough Squad Player

That will change. Just only when we are starting to make profits and are a stable champo club. We will get there. Patience is a virtue

  30. leighton buzzard horn

    leighton buzzard horn Squad Player

But we are a selling club, and we won't just accept any old bid for anyone. Brighton first offered £500k for Buckley and Swansea offered £500k for DG in January, and started this summer with bids around £2m. We ended up getting £4.5m for both of them so we are not accepting ‘any old offer’ and to say so is ridiculous in my opinion. Even when we become financially stronger we will still be a selling club, the only difference is we may be able to negotiate a bit harder but we will still grow, develop then sell players.

All clubs of our size are "selling clubs". I'm confident that in a year or three we will have a financially stable club whereas others will be under threat of non-existance. If the Ipswich situation as described above is accurate, then what a truly frightening place that is to be!

Are you comparing like for like though? If another club had a forward of similar skill set, potential and age as DG that got a similar number of goals to him last season and they got a couple of million quid more then that would be annoying to say the least, but I don’t see who has a player like that. Wickham is a different story altogether. The only other one we have sold is Buckley who only appeared for seven or eight games last year. He was great when he played those games but a million quid for an underperforming playing is a good deal. He has the potential to go on and be great but unfortunately it wasn’t going to be with us.
