With respect to Cleverley we need a Captain with more passion and leadership. Make WTE Captain, tell him to be as loud and fired up as he was yesterday. To get in the face of the ref as well. The fans can get behind him. He already captains Nigeria
What happens when he starts making mistakes and has to be dropped? He hasn't suddenly become a good player because he scored and waved a scummer off. Cathcart should be captain imo.
I think either of them would do a good job as Captain. I know Cathcart gets a lot of stick (and rightly so at times) but without him our backline is very shakey, having him back there commanding was a relief to see. Both WTE and Cathcart have their faults and they will show them more often than not. but as a vocal leader and one who brings the team together? WTE get's my vote.
No idea but it looks like Bilic is a fan. I think it could be Cathcart plus one other for the rest of the season. If he stays fit...
WTE had a great day yesterday. I am very happy for him. I would never question his attitude and passion for the club. But he has shown on many occasions that he has limited ability on the ball and has made some reckless and costly errors. Maybe Bilic and his team can improve his distribution and decision making, but, for now, he is way off club captain level. When Hause and Sierralta are fit, they would be ahead of WTE (as is Cathcart now).
If Louza was fit I'd have him as captain. Aside from that the cabinet is bare. I'd give it to Cathcart. He may be passing his better years but the backline looks a lot more solid with him in it. WTE despite his red card antics, goal and celebrations gifted the ball away and made positional mistakes again. I know he watches his games over and over again but still repeats the same mistakes.
WTE makes mistakes and gets killed for it by fans online and in the ground. Even on Saturday just prior to the goal he misplaced a pass and the Vic exploded in over the top vitriol. Pedro by this point had misplaced 2 or 3 and had his name sung! Cleverely makes mistakes and gets mild abuse and grumbling online. There is a huge difference here sadly. Some players will always he the fall guy. Gavin Mahon is another former player that springs to mind. For me I'd have him Captain in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately Cathcart is still our best and most consistent CB. One half decent game by WTE doesn't justify a Captain's role. Adding to that I've been hugely critical of Gosling in the past but he been nothing short of fantastic in the RB role. Could easily see him keeping that position if he keeps up those levels. Hat tipped .
Our captain doesn't have to be our best player or even our best defender. He does have to be in the team however. Personally i think he's made of the right stuff to be captain when he's in the side, as is Cleverley, but both need to earn their place in the side, as WTE is doing at the moment.
Quite right. I seem to remember Graham Taylor would from time to time buy a player for his leadership qualities rather than what he brought to the team in terms of pure footballing ability. Dennis Booth and Pat Rice spring to mind.
Big, fat, slow, Sam Ellis for a while too ... who had been the captain of his Lincoln side (of which Booth was of course a key player too) !
Definitely....if any player seemed 'disinclined' to follow GT's instructions on the pitch, Sam would 'have a quiet word'.
I was just thinking the same and saw your post, we have no player fit for captaincy, and I'd go so far as to say that fixing this and finding a "proper" skipper candidate will go massively towards this squad evolving from a half hearted skillful bunch to a decent consistent team. Louza plays the part and if he has a voice on him he would be my choice. If not we need to start thinking about future acquisitions with captain in mind. TD at his best was a great captain but ever since nothing...
Made captain. Made a mistake for the first goal and subsequently. Not the best player but he is a leader. We need leaders first 3 wins in a row for 7 years! He hates Luton. Scores against them. Leads us to victory and instills a sense of team purpose! Ill forgive his mistakes for that.
It was mentioned in the Sky commentary tonight. It’s obviously wrong because, off the top of my head, we won the first four games at the beginning of 2018/19 in the PL. Maybe it refers to Championship only?
No we won a few back to back under Munoz in the Championship…I’m thinking a run of 5 or 6 put us firmly in the top 2
anyone else thinking that Pedro is the wrong choice as captain? Seems to have coincided with our awful run. He's young and I'd rather he was able to concentrate on his own game and not have to worry about the team. Is the squad even following him as a leader?
I would honestly give it to Porteous now. Yeah he’s got a mistake in him, but he’s a leader. He doesn’t mind getting stuck in, mouthing off at the ref, and does all the little tricks to wind up the opposition.
Will need to improve his game from recent weeks otherwise people will soon turn on him.. Started well but made a few errors in recent games and a bit rash at times albeit only as he is trying to make a tackle and put in some effort as you say. Maybe a sign of playing in a struggling team.
If he had someone competent around him he'd be less likely to make errors compensating for the two goons. One to his left Kamara and to his right Hoedt. Defending is a team ethic. He'd be fine in a better backline and midfield that actually works. When you have Louza strolling around and Davis exhausted merely by the thought of having to press from the front it all gets harder and harder. Plus a keeper who couldn't command his own hands.
How often have they worked though? Most opposition players seem to ignore him, certainly haven't seen many signs of him getting in someone's head or putting them off their game. He's very good at falling to the ground and getting free kicks when the ball is played long to the striker but that's about all I've seen of his supposed '*********ry' so far. I'd much rather he concentrated on actually defending than engaging in this petty nonsense.
