If anyone with an opposing view had dared to show their face at the Anti-HS2 Bagder Sett and ancient woodland destruction 'demo' I was in the thick of a couple of years ago it would definitely have kicked off. Total carnage - there'd have been tea and home made fruit cake everywhere
Oops. Sorry Sir. In my defence I had just been listening to Grant Shapps so my brain may not have been functioning properly
They are part of Jewish Voice for Labour. I’m sure wrong-headed in your view, but definitely real and sincere in their views. https://www.jewishvoiceforlabour.org.uk/article/growing-the-jewish-bloc-for-palestine/
Aaah the organisation that served to support Jeremy Corbyn’s antisemitic politics and to smear anyone who says they have experienced antisemitism in the Party. That is its function, that is why it exists. It is there to pretend that Labour Jews are split on the question of antisemitism Left antisemitism in general is embraced by people who believe that they themselves are trenchant opponents of antisemitism. Some of these people are Jews
Clive simply made the point that Jewish people could attend the demo unmolested. These may be wrong-uns to you, but the point remains. Your other post is a false equivalence.
Loving the Shappsy avatar. Is it only me that has a soft spot for his endless positivity in the face of overwhelming incompetence?
you can attend the area as long as your beliefs are aligned with those marching. And no it’s not a false equivalence but let’s leave politics - we will rarely see eye to eye
As he seemed to be trying to claim earlier today, whilst the figures may not be correct, they are not wrong and it’s all to do with the accounting methods used. Maybe that’s the excuse he’ll use regarding his tax returns a little down the line.
We don't even allow that at football matches, never mind politically charged issues attended by hotheads on differing sides.
I also liked the way he implied that because Rishi had seen them the sums must be right. The former chancellor - who gave away billions of our money to companies that didn't exist during covid - has had a look at the figures and given them the thumbs up so just relax! Of all of the social misfits, bunglers, drug addicts and perverts that make up the Government there is something about Shapps that is uniquely irritating!
Mark Etkind, the son of a Holocaust survivor, has shared photos of a group of five, four of whom are related to Holocaust survivors while a fifth was persecuted directly by the Nazis, standing at the march. “I, and other Holocaust survivor descendants, have been regularly attending these London protests with placards showing that we are ‘openly Jewish’” he said. “We have, so far, not experienced any antisemitism at all. He added that “every major pro-Palestine demonstration in London has included a large Jewish bloc which has received nothing but support and warmth from their fellow demonstrations”. “Claims that these protests are no-go zones for Jews are completely untrue,” he said.
No shock really, Hamas is Iran and their leadership have holy war boners. Still doesnt justify Israels actions after a certain point nor the innocents blood spilled on both sides. No idea what the way out of this mess is.
Agreed. Hostage taking is ******* abhorrent. But there were also 5000 Palestinians who were in custody, including many young people, many without being charged. Unless they have been charged or found guilty of a crime, they also need to be freed.
agree that people shouldn’t be held with no charge the journalist Jenny Kleeman from the Guardian, and BBC Radio 4 believe it is SO WRONG that Israel hold children criminally responsible from the age of 12 years old. the age of criminal responsibility in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 10 years old. (Scotland is 12). And the Palestinian Authority hold children criminally responsible from just 8 years old. (Hamas have no minimum age).
I very much doubt they are still alive to be honest. The mess is a whole lot bigger than a few hostages from October though. Going to make the Northern Ireland peace talks seem like a tea party for toddlers in comparison. Israel needs to get onside with other countries in the region that have a dislike for the Iranian leadership to cut off supply routes for Hamas and Hezbollah as a starter. Seems to me the larger players in the area though may have a dislike for Israel they arent down with Iran either, they would have little interest in a larger confilct between the two countries breaking out especially the rich gulf states. There are plenty of mutual back scratching opportunities around for Israel.
https://www.ibanet.org/article/D265... idea is that all, vast, oil-generated coffers. and as a side note I don’t believe all the hostages are dead. I believe they are being held in tunnels in Rafah
Decent article from Michael Deacon in the Telegraph: The time has come for our leaders to face the horrifying truth: a possible genocide is under way. Since this awful conflict began last year, countless thousands of innocent people have been killed, many of them children, while thousands more are now desperate refugees. No, I’m not talking about Gaza. I’m talking about Sudan. On Thursday, Human Rights Watch published a report detailing the atrocities that have been committed during the ongoing war in Sudan, which broke out in April last year. Yet here’s a curious thing. Despite that conflict’s savage brutality, I don’t recall seeing any mass protests against it in the West. London is not swarmed every Saturday by hundreds of thousands of enraged demonstrators brandishing placards that liken the RSF (a Sudanese paramilitary force) to the Nazis. Nor have university campuses in the US and the UK been overrun by students shrieking that they stand with the Masalit (an ethnic group the RSF is accused of massacring) and calling for “ceasefire now” in Darfur. Come to think of it, I’m not sure I can recall Western Left-wing activists even mentioning the RSF. So furious is their hatred of Israel, however, that thousands of them have taken to the streets this week to rage against a young, female Israeli pop singer. Eden Golan, who is just 20 years old, is Israel’s representative at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. And for days, the city of Malmo in Sweden – where the contest is being held – has been overwhelmed by anti-Israel protesters, demanding that she be expelled from the competition. Spotted among the crowds on Thursday, as it happens, was Greta Thunberg, proudly wearing a Palestinian-style keffiyeh scarf. Previously famed for her campaigning against climate change, Ms Thunberg has recently expanded her repertoire by campaigning against Israel, as well. “Young people are leading the way,” she told Reuters, “and showing the world how we should react to this.” Is she quite sure? Are young people “leading the way” by treating a 20-year-old female pop singer as if she were somehow responsible for the actions of the Israeli military? Are they “leading the way” by leaving this poor woman with no option but to stay holed up in her Swedish hotel room all day, surrounded by security guards, for the sake of her own safety? And are they “showing the world how we should react” by booing her as she sings a songwhose lyrics were reportedly written as a lament for the Israeli civilians who were kidnapped, raped and murdered on October 7? Personally, I’m not convinced. In fact, I would say that, for the anti-Israel Left, this week’s scenes from Sweden represent an ugly new low. And it may grow uglier still, as Ms Golan is due to perform at tonight’s Eurovision final. Given that their behaviour is only likely to undermine their cause, perhaps these blinkered bullies should consider taking the evening off. And if they need something else to be angry about in the meantime, they could always try googling Sudan. Country in Africa. Great big landmass, just below Europe. They can’t miss it.
We have no influence on Sudan. We don't sell them weapons. We do not have links with Sudanese companies, Universities and Institutions. And last time I looked, Sudan wasn't competing in a broadcast musical competition.
Pure whataboutery I'm afraid. And there's nothing stopping Deacon starting and leading a protest movement about Sudan.
Not to mention that it's a bit rum trying to pretend there is some kind of parity between a war that broke out last year and a multi-generational struggle spanning literal decades. It shouldn't be a surprise that one situation is rather more well known than the other. The other aspect being, of course, I've yet to see anyone try and defend the killing in Sudan. That doesn't lend to much discussion.
I disagree…look I have no problem with peaceful protests to the Israeli governments position or to innocent civilian death where I get riled is the hypocrisy of it all. I engaged with, peacefully may I add, a number of pro Pally supporters in Brighton, Cambridge and Kings Cross recently. What I was amazed at is their lack of knowledge of the regional war. They are coming onto the streets to protest about something that they really don’t have the first clue about when I mentioned about the aid that’s gone into Gaza and been used to line Hamas leaderships pockets rather than used for the benefit of their own people. PalestinianSyria being a geographical area rather than a governed country. When I discussed 1948 and the displacement of Jews and Arabs. When I talked about the 1967 war. Truly clueless and those that only want a ceasefire but then have no interest in what started this current war. The raping, murdering and hostage taking of innocent civilians the fact that they cry out to disarm Israel when weapons are being used for defence. Without the Iron Dome Israel would no longer be in existence. the point is that it’s all so hypocritical. Absolutely want better lives for the Arabs in Gaza. But that involves, alongside Israel having to change its stance, the replacement of Hamas as opposed to greeting the leadership like kings in places like Qatar and Turkey. Then why stop there. What about the Palestinians treatment in surrounding Arab countries The fact that Jewish hate speech is tolerated. The bating of a 20 year old girl at a music festival ffs
I do think the Israeli government is horrific and I can’t believe they were voted for in the numbers they were (even if there wasn’t a majority). This is a consequence of established democratic societies brushing past the most important quality in politics, integrity, for stupid things like charisma and shamelessness. But I agree that I’ve found a particularly poor understanding of the situation among the arty left. LGBTQ+ acts crying unfairness on Eurovision that they can’t express political support for a region in which they’d probably survive a couple of hours before being assaulted or killed for being who they are. It’s obviously fine to still have a view, but the extent of the polarity continues to surprise me. It’s incredibly complex, with villains in power on both sides and both sides acting from a position of hurt, revenge and fear. If you’re hijacking a moment or a debate because you think one of the two sides is obviously good and the other evil, or that there’s an obvious solution, you’re part of the problem.
