BBC Sport has learned that a significant number of drivers had concerns about the safety of the event following the attack.

But eventually they were convinced to go ahead and race after being given further information by bosses.

Part of this information involved the possible consequences of not racing, such as how easily teams and drivers would be able to leave the country if the race did not happen.

    F*cking cowards.

Well, who could have seen the consequences of doing deals with despotic regimes being things like this eh? Meanwhile classic races like Spa and Silverstone are under constant threat because they don't bring in enough money for the vampires who run F1.

Horror smash from Schumacher. I don’t know a lot about him but is he running on his father’s legacy as from what I’ve seen, he’s hardly had a stellar career even before F1.

170mph off the kerb and into a barrier without a tyre wall. Eeep. Car snapped in two when the marshals started to lift it.

I dont think anybody could see Merc being so far off the pace this season, even them. Shocked Lewis is out in Q1 and so far off Russels time too!! Nasty crash there for Schumacher but just heard he is going to be ok.

Do the cars lose downforce now when they go over kerbs? Would this disrupt the ground effect?

Schumacher. Hamilton was just too slow and eliminated in Q1.

I wonder how long they’ll persevere with the cooler tyre jacket limit.

I can see a few big crashes this year. Low grip, flat out bends and poorly designed concrete walls feels like a disaster waiting to happen this weekend. Fun though.

If I were Lewis, I’d start from the pits on hards, avoid the chaos on lap one, and hope for a safety car or seven after the first pit window.

Great lap by Perez. Thrashed Max, which doesn’t happen often.

Verstappen will be happier then !

Hamilton a bit unlucky to miss out on a key pit stop at the right time .

Glad Norris got some points .

Versrappen has a moany and entirely difficult personality to like or admire, but he is a fierce competitor and a good driver.

Lewis was some terrible luck and about 3 seconds away from a brilliant race result (given the circumstances).

Merc gambled that there would be another safety car (pretty solid bet) but the eventual incident happened in the only place and at the only time Lewis couldn’t take advantage of it.

Max was extremely lucky that the waved yellows came on in the penultimate lap when Leclerc was right behind and about to enable DRS.

Overall a very exciting race, which isn’t something you can always say about Jeddah.

Really good race again! Lots of opportunities to counter-attack. Alonso as fierce as ever, shame about the power failure.

Hearing Verstappen moaning trying to get the attention of the race director really pisses me off. He needs to be told to stfu. Plastic champion.

Another quality race deservedly won by Max. Just needs to cut out the whining baby act.
How good was the racing between the two Alpines? Loved that.

Hopefully F1 is back to being an entertaining series again, rather the Sunday afternoon nap material it has been for the past decade. I like how overtakes now require some strategy and thought, rather than just breezing past on a straight and that's the end of it - it's more like traditional racing, where positioning and momentum in the build up to the overtake are important, as well as a sound defensive plan for the aftermath.

Once Mercedes are up to speed it will be even more wild.

This 100%. It’s a shame for the sport they’ve dropped off so far as three teams going hammer and tongs within 0.2 second of lap pace would be epic. Presumably Merc are out of the game for a few races at least.

  24. Merc are out the game for the season imo

The budget cap includes a wind tunnel and CFD limit so there is very little Merc can do about this dog of a car

Another race in the USA , this time Las Vegas - guess that is where the money and glamour is?

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/60932994

    On a Saturday night though.

There enough fans in the USA to warrant 4 races?

Guess that is the the whole point - to attract new ones.

I can only think of Texas, Miami and Vegas!

There are a huge number of racing fans in the US. Many of whom like Indie cars or equivalent. Get some proper F1 racing on their streets and I reckon it's a huge growth market.

Circuit looks pretty dull. Also curious when will FP and Quali be. Thursday and Friday or maybe Saturday morning?

Going by the reaction of the drivers most of them are more excited by the chance to go to the casinos than the track and race itself!

All marketing acting by the drivers.
With the money they have, if they really wanted to go to LV they would of been.

4 drs zones in Australia. And they’ve widened the track in several places too.

Should be much more overtaking, but let’s see if that leads to better racing.

Ugh. So how is a driver supposed to pull a gap out? It'll be like playing an arcade racing game with catch up on.

Still, their other changes this season have proved to be well judged, so perhaps I'll change my mind after seeing it in action.
