Dream move for Troy and I'll be hoping Birmingham make it into the Premier League so we can give him a well deserved standing ovation.

Scored the two goals that will live with me forever. The semi-final goal against Wolves, the same day I found out I was going to be a father - and of course the most famous goal Watford will ever score, against Leicester.

    Thanks for everything, Troy Deeney.

Tbf, JP is as talented as anyone, but it would have been one hell of a call for any manager to pick an 18 year old fresh from Brazil! Maybe Welbeck could have played some more, but he was injured for much of that season, and as much as Deeney was a difficult figure to ignore for managers, the club did try with the signings of Gray and Success to provide some different options!

Yeah, it will be weird not seeing him around, but I'm prepared for it given his reduced role in recent times. Right now I'm just happy it's worked out for all parties, and I'll be cheering on Brum this season as well as us!

He's been a huge part of all of our lives following this club for 11 years

I wish him only the best

Why the 3rd round, against Birmingham in the Final would be much better!

Have felt his time in the starting 11 was up a few years back and that it was time for him to move on to help us grow (in the sense of pressure off the manager to feel they should pick him, or other players able to shine through).

But…..I did feel a bit emotional watching that video message. Seemed very genuine. Shame he didn’t get a Vicarage Road send off

    That's a sad contemplative watch.

Here's my boy when he led the teams out with Troy at the first home game after GT passed away. Have to say Troy was brilliant then and every time he's seen my son since always remembers him.

    Watford all time legend.

A great departure speech and brings a tear to the eye. Some of his silly comments, his billy big bollox attitude and his obvious deterioration as a goalscorer over the last year or two has tainted things a little but he can hold his head up high for his time at Watford. As a player he has got a lot out of his time at the club and we have too.

Shame he didn't have the chance to do one last lap of honour at the vic

Inevitable our paths will cross again

Good luck to him. Seems like the start of a new era.

    Well strange transfer window

After a few years of calling for it looks like Deeney and Gray are gone , I think it’s time for us to move on but Troy has served well for many years so should be fondly remembered, Gray not so much.

strange as only a couple of months ago Troy was adamant he could hack it in the prem , wonder if it was Xisco , Deeney or pozzo that started the ball rolling

Had a chat with him once and got a picture of him with my son. Came across as a really decent guy.

True club legend. I hope he comes back in some capacity when he finishes playing like Luther did.

He'll be missed, but he'll be back in one capacity or another.

I think we're well refurbished up front, good for him that he's able to head out with his head held high, not languishing on the bench.

Why the cup ? Very possible they will be in the same league or a league above us next season.

Troy might not be perfect, but I don't think there can be any doubt that he's been anything other than a net positive for the club and deserves his place in the modern history of WFC.

All the best to him and I really hope his Blues career leads him into retirement with a bang. Probably the best 500k the club ever spent, even if age caught up with him a bit in the end.

This day was inevitable, we all know (including him I suspect) that he didn't have the legs to be productive or effective in the Premier League any more.

A legend that repaid the club standing beside him when he was a guest of Her Majesty.

Some memorable goals and was the leader for our greatest modern day promotion.

I'll be hoping for a home FA cup tie with Brum so he can get a good send off.

For some time there was a thought going round that there was part of the changing room that was running (or trying to run) the club and Troy was a major part of that. A few players made it hard for managers to manage!

With the unexpected turnover of players this window (and probably more to come) it seems we are getting our average age down with more incentivised hungry players! This can only be a good thing and gives all supporters real hope that this time next year we will still be in the same league! COYH

P.S. Good luck and many thanks Troy x

Hope he gets the triumphant homecoming he wants at Birmingham. The last couple of seasons have been mostly forgettable when it comes to his contributions, but for a long while before that, he was central to many of the good and great things we’ve achieved in his time here.

Given all the talk pre-season about the shape he was in, it’ll be interesting to see whether he’s able to have an impact on games.

    Best of luck to him.

I think my last post on this thread was more WFC in general rather than about Troy, so let me put that right. Sorry for getting distracted.

As I posted on the Hughes thread, I think it’s often hard to separate one’s feelings about a departure (player or manager) between the now and the more glorious past.

The now? I think it feels right Troy has left. He’s sadly wouldn’t have had much left to offer us in the future, and it’s lovely for him that he’s secured a move to both a club and an area of the country that’s so dear to him. I wouldn’t have wanted my final memories of him to be another season of scratching around in the PL, a few inglorious appearances as a late substitute, maybe injury hit again.

So that’s the now, but I think what today’s departure does is to finally allow us to stand back and reflect on the more glorious past, as so many people are doing tonight. So many glorious memories that made us all so happy over so many seasons. Goals that won us matches, sent us to Wembley, kept us in an FA cup semi final at the death and helped us stay in the PL for five consecutive seasons.

My favourite most recent TD moment will be his goal in our 3-0 win over Liverpool. That was quite some night. Pre-covid (just), although we didn’t know it at the time it was to be our last home match with a packed Vic for over a year, the unbeaten league leaders and European champions, and Troy’s goal the icing on the cake in a fantastic victory. That’s what I yearn for again, nights like those, wins against the PL big boys.
And maybe this season will bring some like that. But they will be achieved without our captain of that famous evening. It’s now over to the likes of Sarr and Dennis and King and Pedro et all to see if any will achieve the sort of longevity TD did.

The Troy we’ve seen since that famous win over Liverpool sadly won’t be missed at all as we go forward, with a younger pacier forward line. The Troy of that night and the many many great games before it will be. He could often grate with his noise and insatiable appetite for publicity, but he put us on the footballing map in the eyes of many. Football, like life itself, can be cruel in how it moves forward so fast with barely a blink at the past. Yesterday’s idols become tomorrow’s has beens. We will move on, but it’s a fitting time to look back too and say thank you and good luck.

Deeney's message is so typically Watford ... a bit awkward, obviously not professionally scripted, and holding back the emotion. We all know that there is a deep bond here. A random memory ... Southampton, not so long back, he's jumped over the barrier and he's standing chatting and signing at the end of a game, think we drew 1-1, miserable Autumn day. Many other similar examples at away games. Feel lucky to have been part of an era of football, and this club, that has had the type of commitment of Elton, and GT and Troy ... great to be at the amazing Tottenham stadium yesterday, but it feels like we're in a different era ...

Thanks Troy for giving me some of the greatest moments I have, and probably will, ever witness in football.

It's the right time for him to go and I hope he does well for Birmingham. But I also hope he knows that the majority of level headed fans will always see him as a Watford legend, for his massive role in pushing forward the club, over 11 years, into what it is today.

My favourite Troy memory (apart from the obvious ones) was the 2-1 home win against spurs when he chased a lost cause and bullied their defender into conceding a cheap free kick. Got the crowd up for the fight and we (he) scored from the resulting set piece and we went on to win.

he was very good at getting the crowd going when we were quiet - not sure we have anyone to do that now

I originally posted the below last Thursday before the announcement of the Deeney talks, I'm so glad the club and TD agreed with me that it was a good idea, even though some on here disagreed with me at the time :D

We'll probably let him go on a free if he wants to move on, because the great service he has given this club has probably earned him the right to go gracefully.
I don't think many, if any clubs in the PL or Championship would be willing to pay a fee for him, but someone might take a chance on him if he is a free agent. Therefore his pride might just make him go for it if someone was interested in signing him, even if it was on a lower wage than we are currently paying him.

I think he has finally admitted to himself that his best days are behind him, so if we let him go on a free that could be a decent way of letting him leave with his head held high and give him a chance to play out his career at a relatively decent level.

Whatever happens, thanks for the memories Troy you are a true WFC legend.

So glad you have left with the dignity you deserve Troy and I hope you have a great end to your footballing career with Brum, you will always be a Watford legend and be welcome back at The Vic any time :)
