Brother in Law lives in Calgary. Stupidly cold and crazy depths of snow. Guess that's why they held the winter Olymics there !

It’ll be too hot in 6 months. We should shovel up some of this cold snow and keep it in a cupboard for then when we will appreciate it!

I sensibly kept a load of the summer warm air and shoved it into the cupboards and loft. Time to cash in I think!

Been cold these past mornings getting up and scraping the car. First visit is 7am, so I need to go out at around 6:30. Wash my hands under hot water and clean gloves on before each visit to warm my hands up. Otherwise it makes the oldies jump a foot out of their bed when you clap your hands on them. Clothes on the radiator before you get them dressed is always a good one too They appreciate that.

When you leave home at that time in winter, in that cold, it's like you've stepped out into the apocalypse.

That was the temperature when I stepped off the plane for the very first time in Vilnius. On leaving the plane and walking to the terminal I was wearing, what was billed as, a "Swedish Army Officer's Spring Coat" (a sheepskin lined leather duffle coat that zipped up). I though the 'pinching' I experienced on the arms was pickpockets trying to distract me. On later inspection of the coat I discovered that it was regions of the inner coat sleeves where the sheepskin was a bit 'bald' (about the area of a 1/2p piece). I later discovered that coat leather becomes extremely brittle below -35 oC.

One of the few things I miss of my life there was cross country skiing at -30 oC where I wore a set of Lithuanian army thermals (courtesy of my father-in-law he taught at the military academy), 'hair' (I think dog) socks (from a babushka in the local market), ski gloves, a woolly beanie and a shell-suit.

The Daily Express. Perfect reading for those who can't distinguish between 'climate' and 'weather'. Or indeed, facts and spin.

Since the summer I've been waiting for the first "proper" winds as a couple of the neighbours have had some highly dodgy fencing put up this year, (at a h*ll of a cost to boot). I'm boring Mrs D weekly telling her to wait until the first gusts arrive and those fences will collapse like a Watford back four. I shall report back.

I have about 14 meters worth of quality but very old featheredge fencing down the bottom of the garden that's literally kept together by ivy, I think it's time might be up tomorrow. I also have a few evergreens that are really going to catch that wind, so the chainsaw has had a sharpen and oil just in case.

Many years ago the Express was known as the retired Colonel's paper, anyone else heard that term?

I haven’t heard that term. If I’d have been forced to guess I would have thought they read the Telegraph. Maybe a bit of a pisstake as colonel is a senior, but often away from the action rank is it not? Colonel Sanders was notoriously a bit chicken.

London and the South East, including Herts now covered by the red warning, which means risk to life and ‘it’s windy’.

    Nothing spectacular yet.

Quite breezy here in Brizzel, but so far not as bad as Wednesday. Been told to WFH, though.

This bit is always funny. Reporters on the scene stood in front of blue skies, in a light breeze, saying ‘look at the waves’ as they roll in a couple of feet high.

That said, the weather nerds on Twitter seem adamant it’s a bad one coming so doubt it’ll be too funny later on.

Exactly, so before we all moan that it was a lot of fuss about nothing, let’s bear in mind that Keighley was saved a journey in to work. Result!
