I think he should have stuck with us for the time being and put himself in the shop window for either a move in January or a renegotiation of his contract with us at that point providing he withdrew his transfer request and pledged to knuckle down with us, just like Capoue has.
I'd be surprised if no one signs him on a free, however, it would be funny if by 16th October no one has taken him, and we resign him on a Championship wage.
The Athletic say that the decision to terminate his contract was amicable and that Watford didn't have to pay off any of his contract.
Yeah, saw that. Reckon his basic salary was fairly low, and that he's still confident of getting a deal somewhere else, hence he wasn't digging his heels in for a payoff. Whether Janmaat will be as easy to deal with I don't know
It was a mutually beneficial solution IMO, we get a wage off our books and he probably has a better chance of getting another club as a free agent.
I’m still not sure this completely adds up to me. Fair enough, it might be that he was deffo on a pay per play deal not pay if fit to play, and we’d said to him we can’t afford to play him, so he’d be on £25k per week for the next year. But he’s basically gambling on being able to get a better deal than we gave him a year ago. There wasn’t anyone willing to do that then, so why will there be a year later?
In fairness I think he had other offers but Watford made sense for him - it wasn't just an opportunistic signing for us, he knew the club really wanted him as they had been after him for a while, he would not have to move house, also to those of a non bed-wetting mindset we looked to be a club going in a positive direction. I suspect it was also that he knew his body physically couldn't hack it in the championship.
He seems a lovely chap but I doubt Danny could cope with a six a side game against Euro Disney Girls Second XI.
Just thought, what if West Brom go for Welbeck as their big striker signing and forget Deeney? We’ll have cut our wage bill by £20k-£70k but passed on the chance to reduce it by £100k. Very different players but could happen.
No-one, I repeat, no-one will want to sign Deeney. An old, injured, non-scoring CF on huge wages, focusing purely on his future in the media. I’m afraid we are stuck with his cost until his contract ends or we pay him off.
Never be surprised by what desperado PL clubs do. The next week will see Championship players being given a PL chance.
Don’t forget saved thousands a week, which adds up to a couple/few million a year. That’s Welbeck’s future right there though. Constantly pimped out on a 1 year contract to whoever is desperate enough for him for the next 3-5 years. From Utd and Arsenal to Watford and Brighton on a crazy wage structure for a year or so. Will be interesting to see how much game time he gets in the Prem this season.
Only thing is Brighton probably aren't going down, so unless he has a horrendous time with injuries, he'll probably stick around at Brighton past this season I reckon
We’ve swapped somebody who scored 2 PL goals last season for somebody who scored errrrrrrr let me see hmmmm 2 PL goals last season!
Exchanged a rusting antique that turns and manoeuvres like an oil tanker for an England international. Sounds fair.
Will do well to score more than 2 or 3 this season. A waste of anyone's money. Glad it's not ours this time.
At 7.5k a week Murray is still preferable to Welbeck. He’s rubbish but he’s always available. Ivic clearly likes a settled squad, what use is a player who will likely be out at least once or twice in a season and take 10 games each time he is to get up to speed. All the while we’re paying him 10x Murray’s wages to get there. Both bad options but I’d rather than one that cost 10x less and is available 10x more.
