The transfer market is not going to pick up in January. The impact of COVID this winter will be far worse than spring and will further depress the transfer market. I wanted to keep Suarez, I would have liked to have got more money but it’s not a demonstrable fact that it is a bad deal, so why do you need other people to say it?

Basically the Pozzo's have virtually taken themselves back to day one because of last season.

They have incrementally improved us over the past 8 years, but because of the issues which you have laid out (which I agree with), they have taken themselves to almost the first day after they took over from The Red Helmet. They've screwed themselves royally. All that hard work has gone out of the window. They now have to sell players they wanted to keep, for a pittance.

It's been totally self-inflicted. We are now a Championship club with bigger debt than they inherited. They are selling off a lot of assets and are still not getting close to the shortfall because of the underselling.

The only tangible improvement from their ownership, right now, is our profile has been lifted plus we have improved the stadium. These are good things of course, but they must be kicking themselves for basically wasting 8 years of gradual improvements. Their ownership has been a bit like a game of Snakes and Ladders.

    I'm still very optimistic overall.

Fantastic options at GK for the Championship.
Possibly the best selection of CBs in the league to chose from.
Excellent first choice wing backs (although need more depth, but hopefully a LWB is coming)
The midfielders we have are great, just think we need one more if/when Capoue goes.

But then we get to actual goal scorers and that is where our potential problems lie, especially as we have just lost someone who looked on paper to be our best chance of scoring a lot of goals. Gray is probably our second best hope and he is out injured already!

I think midfield will be alright if Hughes stays, and it appears he's very much if Vlads plans (whether Will is planning to stay who knows). Happy for TDB to get more game time from I've seen so far - Phillips is raw, so would be good perhaps to get cover for him and ship him off to league 1 for some experience.

I think WB's we could use one more - If Kiko sticks around he could fill in - If we maintain the 3 CBs then defensively his flaws will be covered and he's excellent going forward for this league.

Strikers I agree on, though I still see someone stepping up unexpectedly, be it Penaranda or Success or even Sinclair - Vlad is use to using what he has and getting the best out of players - With Pen and Isaac we know there's talented players somewhere inside them, just whether he can get them to grow up and focus on the game.

Would have probably been quite good.

    Didn’t want to be here.

Covid and relegation stopped us getting better value.

    Close thread.

At the point at which players are refusing to play for us, their 'true value' is whatever clubs are prepared to pay for them. They have no value to us while they're not on the pitch and stinking out the place because they don't want to be here.

Even with our outgoing players, the squad is clearly several levels higher in terms of ability than the one the Pozzo’s inherited on Day 1.

I don't think anyone disagrees that being relegated is a big set back. I think that arguing that we're back to the days of Bassini and Carl ****inson might be the sort of stretch that you wouldn't put a Chinese child gymnast through. Would we be able to sell Suarez for more if we weren't relegated and if covid wasn't happening? Probably, but those are facts that we can't really avoid now. I think if the shoe was on the other foot, and we'd spent more than £10m on someone who'd only ever regularly scored in one season in the Spanish second division, there'd be a lot of people quite willing to slag off the club for a poor piece of business, so I don't think this is too bad, especially for a player who did not want to play here.

Cant really say im sad to see him gone. But its one of those where in 6 years time we’ll either say “what the **** happened to that Luis Suarez fella” or “**** sakes, you see that Suarez there playing for Barca, we had him at Watford but we sold him before he could ever play for us”

People are being honest, they just have a different view to you. Covid is a very valid reason, as are contract lengths, relegation, players refusing to play etc. You have a view that we should have got more than we have, others don't agree, but that doesn't mean they are not being honest

Well I never saw that coming. Good riddance. Pedro will be ten times the player he ever be. Well I hope.

  16. sorry but your being ridiculous

this side would absolutely hammer the side pozzo had on day 1

add Del and Capoue back into it, and under Ivic it wouldn't have been relegated last year

I doubt it. Probably more that Luis fella didn't want to play for us. It kind of makes sense now - The club wanted him to be a big part of this season hence the hype when he came back, but Luis didn't want anything to do with it. Egg on the clubs face, sure, but little they can do when the toys are all over the floor.

It's a valid point as he may turn out to be a player that could have thrived in the Premier League if went back up but I do feel he forced our hand unfortunately

I'd go along with this. We're going to be solid and we'll create chances, but do we have a player who will take them? This was one of the biggest frustrations from the past couple of seasons. The crazy misses we regularly had, and it's carrying on this season too, from what I've seen.

Pedro and Sarr are incredible talents, but they are not natural finishers. Gray is not a finisher either. Deeney should be a lot more effective in this league, so maybe he shouldn't be written off just yet, Perica looks like he could be good in the air, and Murray looks done as a player, although technically he's the best finisher at the club.

I think we're going to have to muddle through, as we'll never get a player as good as Suarez for £10m. Hopefully Cucho will get his permit and we can introduce him in January, but that's probably just being a little optimistic.

We have good forward players, but not a "complete" striker. Suarez would have been that guy, so it is extremely disappointing to let him go for minimal financial reward. It's our loss and Granada's gain for sure.

If he isn't going to play a part this season I think I'd rather just have money in the bank (even if it is on the low side) that we can use to balance the books and / or bring in new players to help us get promoted.

We already have Cucho out on loan if we do manage to get ourselves promoted and he is seen as the better of the two.

Seems like a little bit of knicker wetting about this deal today. There are a lot of mitigating circumstances at the moment, so we're never going to get amazing deals for these sort of players. Also, who knows what goes on behind the scenes? He didn't play for us, was never likely to play for us and yet we still got money, better than a slap in the face. He may have turned out to be the next Micky Quinn and not the next Messi, all ifs and buts. Time to move on.

Heck, I was gutted when we sold Furlong, Kevin Miller, Ken Charlery, Mooney, Robbo etc.. etc.. but here we still are.

I think that ship sailed once he refused to train/play etc.

Perhaps it could have been an option earlier in the window, but I’d imagine once he’d taken his stance, bridges were burned.

No, people are just putting a positive spin on it for the sake of it. Be positive when it's merited and negative when it's called for too. That way you'll have a balanced view on things.

You say "You have a view that we should have got more than we have, others don't agree" I cannot accept that anyone thinks it was a good fee. Sorry, I just don't buy that. All I'm getting is reasons why we have to sell as some type of justification for it. What if we sold for £5m or for free? People would still be sticking to their guns it was a good deal for Watford.

I'm not disagreeing about having to move him out of the club, but for only £10m is where my issue lies. Some people (actually quite a lot) cannot seem to understand that point. They justify whatever the fee is, with the fact we needed to move this player on......so it equates to "good" in their eyes.

Are people allowed to be negative that we've lost a promising player but at the same time positive that we managed to get £10m or so in a covid-impacted market for a player who was refusing to play and has one good season in a poor division to his name?

He wanted to force through a move, but Foster did exactly the same to get to us from West Brom and no-one bats an eyelid about it amongst our fan base. Its a bit of a ****** thing to do but not sure it makes him a tosser - reality is I am sure I would do the same in his shoes.

I can also totally understand Ivic wanting rid though.

People just have to be a little more honest. If anyone says they think £10m is a good fee for Suarez, I think they're just lying. Virtually everyone, even you just now, has to bolt on all the reasons for the sale....which tells me even you think it's a low fee, but are doing your best to give reasons in order to justify it.
