Extract from The Guardian this morning:

Watford are interested in taking gravity-challenged winger Ashley Young to Vicarage Road from Manchester United. The Hornets are also eyeing up Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno

Would be a fantastic signing, especially if Richarlisons, or however its spelt, work permit has fallen through

  3. Would be a good signing for the season, buying the club time to sort the wide positions out properly

  4. Sort of OK

Would like this very much. Obviously not a long term solution but reckon he could still do the job for a season or two and he is properly 'one of our own'. Experienced also so would probably add value to some of the youngsters we have been getting.

I guess he is still in contract at MU and probably on a significant wage so largely would depend upon what they want and if he would forego some pennies to finish his career in the bosom of his family.

Certainly if the sums add up.

Not sure how Kamara will adapt his 'Young Ashley Young' utterance though!

Ashley Young would be a fabulous signing for us. Proven home grown premiership player with not only the guile and versatility to improve the squad, but also a player that would be a step up on the previously linked Lennon.

    Yes please.

I believe Jose wants him to stay as he likes his work ethic and versatility, but if Young wants to come here I don't think he would block the move.

young, experienced, wouldn't take up a squad place because he's home grown. Yes from me.

In principle I'd like this however with the new rules on diving he'd only play one in three games

    Not fabulous.

Young is on £110k per week so that is why I am worried! Signing him would not guarantee us Premiership status and if we paid him that, other players would want comparable wages thus increasing our wage bill beyond a sustainable level.

If he agreed a reduction in wages (unlikely) then he would obviously be a good signing.

    There is a 0% chance we'll pay him £110k a week.

32 year old winger who's pace has gone and who has barely played a game in the past two seasons, just what we need...

If he hadn't played for us previously no one on here would have any interest in seeing him sign for us, but the curse of the ex-player obsession strikes again.

Would he be on 110k a week with us? Of course not. He's just turned 32 and his contract is up next summer, therefore a 2-year contract on half his current wages (plus signing on fee etc) would end up more profitable for him. Hell, he'd probably take a 3-year contract on 30k-40k a week.

I'm quite intrigued as to how challenged by gravity Ashley Young is, does he need a zimmer frame to stand up right? Or does he need weighing down to ensure he doesn't float away and get caught under the Rookery Roof?

Signing Ashley Young aged 32 to a three year deal on £30-40k a week would be beyond insanity.

Over 50 games in the past 2 seasons is hardly not played. 30 of those were in the league, more starts than sub appearances. If wages were fine, I do not see why not, the squad desperately needs strengthening.

That's not quite true. On the rare occasion he has played over the last 2 seasons he's still looked very decent & easily good enough for us.

I doubt there's anything in the rumour though - nobody else is reporting it so far. Probably just click bait.

Far from a regular though, was he? Especially last season.

It's exactly the sort of signing we should be steering well clear of. An over the hill winger who's well past his best coming in on a big contract for two to three years would be an absolute panic buy and reminds me of the sort of horrible signings QPR were making a few years ago.

Did you see him play last year? He wasn't a starter, but he was often praised for his appearances, and Mourinho clearly liked him enough to block a number of approaches to sign him.

I've saw him play a number of times and he is far from over-the-hill. He is still pacy in comparison to the rest of our team, is a better crosser than everyone (maybe bar Femenia, although we haven't seen him in competitive action), has top work ethic and professionalism which are constantly praised by top managers and is better at set pieces than anyone else in our squad.

But sure, aside from being better than the other wide players we currently have and a great player to have around the squad, clearly he's rubbish.

Transfer fees and wages are unreal at the moment. Deeney is apparently on upwards of 80k. Richarlison is rumoured to be on close to 60k if he joins. I'd imagine Capoue etc are on around 50k
