Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores is eyeing up Swansea winger Jefferson Montero. The Ecuadorian international scored in the Swans 3-2 loss at Oxford on Sunday, but hasn’t been a guaranteed starter in recent months - having enjoyed an excellent start to the season. The Hornets have impressed, and Flores wants to add further pace in wide areas to supplement strike duo Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney. Andros Townsend has been mooted, but the £14million fee Tottenham want is prohibitive and Montero is seen as a more attractive option. From the Mirror
Looked good once, but been ****e ever since. But enough about Townsend. This Montero guy ain't an England player so no fanks.
I was at the game on Sunday when he scored. It was a very good goal but that was it, he did nothing else. Doesn't work hard enough, create enough or score enough.
Completely missed the point. Montero has had seasons in the Premier League already, on some days he's unplayable and the best winger in the league, some days he's anonymous. Only thing he can really "develop" on is consistency and at 26 he has 4 years before losing pace hence why I think it's weird to say he has time to develop.
Ighalo played in La Liga and has still improved here? I don't even rate this guy much but saying players can't develop once they reach a certain age is quite bizarre. Even this season Ben Watson has said Quique has taught him things he's never seen from any manager before and it's made him a better player. How old is Watson? 30?
Nope, I honestly have no idea what point you're trying to make here then. You're saying he doesn't have time to develop as far as I can see and I'm saying he does so let's leave it at that.
This would potentially be a good signing, I say potentially because he needs to be more consistent. But we need a wide player that can terrorise full backs and go past them. At the start at the season when Swansea were good he was doing it. If QSF feels he can get Montero back to his old self he could sign.
Peak years for most midfielders are in the 28-31 range, give or take. That peak moves depending on whether the player relies on pace or technique. Players with significant ball skills that rely less on physical prowess will tend to have longer peak performance. In contrast, players make heavy use of physical characteristics tend to peak earlier and drop off earlier. That's why barring injuries, you can expect Messi to have a longer peak career than Ronaldo; Messi relies on his physical characteristics much less than Ronaldo does. Either way, Montero still has a couple of seasons before likely the finished product (although players like Di Natale show that late bloomers do exist).
For the record, Ben Watson hasn't developed a whole lot, he's playing out his skin and has been given the right tactics to follow.
I vaguely remember a couple of games either at the start of the season or back end of last where MOTD picked him out as the outstanding player in the game. Has tricks and turns and as someone said, can definitely terrorise defenders on his day. Watching Mahrez in the last few games, they seem to be similar type of players but with Mahrez obviously doing the business week-in-week-out whereas Montero seems inconsistent at best. Could we just therefore just get Mahrez instead please?
Its a yes from me although his wife is looking a bit thin for my liking - I like them with a bit of meat
Ah Mr Mellnick, according to Matthau and Burns! Think he has a bad case of gingivitis too,Mr M that is. No thank you.
Wasn't this guy one of Swansea's outstanding players in the first month of the season? There's some good analysis of him here, it sounds like his injury put him off track - https://www.footballpools.com/news/why-jefferson-montero-remains-critical-to-any-swansea-success He may have also fallen victim to what's going on behind the scenes at that club as they clearly have talented players, but they all seemed to start underperforming at the same time. Same thing happened under Laudrup before he was sacked. Would be a good signing if we can get him in cheapish, and if Flores can get some consistency out of him. If not, then as long as we don't spend too much on bringing him in it won't be a huge risk.
