Your Thoughts On Anthony McNamee?

Just wondering what you Watford fans made of him whilst he was there. I've seen some skill and pace, but I need to know what he's really like. Any attitude issues? What are his qualities?

    Thanks, KS.

I think you'd be better off asking at Swindon.

Macca always had lots and lots of skill and pace but always seemed to drift in and out of matches and never really added defensively. There was a hype around him from a young age and that messed up his head.

Go to watfordlegends.com and read the Ray Lewington interview. That should give you a hint.

Fantastic ability. Some thought he was simply a luxury player who offered little end product but looked good doing it. Frankly, there aren't many players that i've seen for watford who can put in a better cross and we definitely havent been able to improve on his set pieces. He is, however about three feet tall.

An overall average player whose style is easy on the eye. Typically would beat 2 or 3 opponents without a second thought and then shank the ball into the stand behind the goal when going for the cross. Unfortunately the seals kept clapping him for his trickery regardless of the lack of end result and I think that had a big impression on the young player. Ended up complacent and hitting a glass ceiling beyond which he couldn't improve.

His best season at the club was our promotion year - his stats of 9 assists and 1 goal say it all really. Able to contribute assists in a free-scoring confident side but sorely lacking in goalscoring ability.

He definitely needed to leave this club and definitely needed the step down to League 1 to try and reignite his career. Not a clue how he's done since he left - I was never his biggest fan and was glad to see the back of him.

Bit lightweight for me. Plenty of style but doesn't have the physcial presence to help grind out a decent performance on a cold winter evening match up north.

    Good luck to him though.

Overated. He was a squad player at best. Great pace, but more often than not his delivery wasn't much cop. I think he's found his level to be honest.

I disagree with people who say he was all tricks and no end product. Some fans love a Lennon or McAnuff player who'll skin defenders, but never get the cross in, but for me there's little point. I always thought McNamee did have a very good final ball and thought he could do a job.

For me, I'd have rather had him than McAnuff any day.

Last time I saw him play was the League Cup game against Gillingham 2 years ago, where he simply ran the show. Admittedly against L1 opposition, but he would go from wizard to average from one game to the next.

    Personally I liked Macca.

He could always excite fans with trickery and ability to run past players and I always felt, although some will disagree, that he was a very good crosser of the ball, especially from corners or free kicks.

He can play at this level and well but just needs the right type of manager to spur him on and get the best out of him.

Could disappear from games, but always entertaining with his twists and turns and an excellent crosser of the ball. The trouble was, we never had anyone attacking the near post when he was here, so if the opposition had a big bloke outjumping our big bloke, nothing came of his good work.

He didn't track back much - and when he did, he wasn't strong enough to win the ball - but that's OK if you have a decent left back (we didn't) and a central midfielder able to cover. The trouble with Lewington was that he only talked about what his players couldn't do - he wanted forwards able to defend, and defenders able to attack, and didn't focus much on how effective they were at their day-job.

Overrated. Very skillful with the ball at his feet but he was a show pony. I don't it's coincidence that succesive managers didn't play him every week. As others have said he had a decent cross on him but he couldn't tackle or mark the opposition.

At one stage in his career he was level pegging with Ashley Young, and tipped as the `next big thing`.

Unfortunately he didn`t develop and although very skilled, was really inconsistent - a luxury player that we couldn`t afford.

Hugely UNDERRATED in my opinion. Had a good final ball, and could beat his man. Good attacking threat, and as other have said, i'd have him over W*nkanuff!

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. Jobi is another player who impressed me tremendously, and if I'm honest I went to watch a game not knowing who I was supposed to be looking for due to the similar names.:forehead:

What game did you go to? I don't think Jobi and McNamee played in the same side.

After Watford got promoted to the EPL I didn't see Anthony in the first-team, and the following season when I saw Jobi play I thought they might have been the same player. Both seem really good players, especially JM.

Is this the old "he left us, so he's traitorous *****" mentality?

    He's good enough for Reading...

Anyway, I got my answer to my original question. Thanks. Don't be surprised to see Anthony back in the CCC.

  29. krisvad

    krisvad Forum Viking

It's not because he left. It's because in all his time here he had maybe 5 or 6 games where he made his potential show and actually made a difference. He's got skill for sure but rarely made an impact.

Look at his goal scoring record and assist record for us in the CCC. Not exactly impressive for a winger/wide forward who started most games.

The problem is he can beat his man but has no end product. And when he gets into shooting position he'll hit it straight at the keeper 9 times out of ten.

When Todgers decided to go for him I think most WFC fans were relieved. He might be good enough for Reading... but look where they are in the league table. He might even be a success there - but he was never going to be that with us.

Macca on the other hand - had end product, had pace, had it all really - except for the mental strength it took to make it. It seems now he's older and wiser he may have found that mental side of things. And if he joins you or another CCC club - I'll be cheering him on (when he's not playing us ;) )

    I don't think he's traitorous, I just think he's sh1t.

I'll be pleased to see MacNamee given a crack at the Chump and hope he proves some of the people on here wrong.

Good enough for Reading cos Rodgers can't make decisions on players himself, look at his signings. Mat Mills was being hyped up all last season, Rasiak and Crapanuff were with us last season, those loan players he knew from chelsea or our scouts(o'dea). Mcanuff is a disgrace, he won't perform at reading.

  32. pafc

You can say that about any young manager. How else are they to sign players? O'Dea served his purpose as he's a good scout, and scouts are the way most players are signed.
