It's usually a combination of that and some breeders engaging in poor (read: non-existent) breeding protocols.

The venn diagram of people who don't train their dogs appropriately and people who purchased large dogs capable of doing significant damage has a disturbingly high amount of overlap. They also tend to buy from bad (read: cheap) breeders, which is a recipe for disaster.

They are working dogs and are big and strong. My point is that big dogs can be dangerous whatever breed they are and a lot then depends on the owner

8 deaths in a year? Apparently over 10000 of these dogs in the UK. Clearly 8 is 8 too many but three people died from swallowing toothpicks, shall we ban them as well

This is verging very much on US gun owner arguments.

Absolutely. Let's ban XL Bullies first and then we can move on to banning people.

    Just start with banning people.

The XLs can't Bully people if there are no people to Bully.

Dogs don't kill people, dog owners with dogs do.

We've had mastiffs. One barked like it wanted to rip you apart, but was such a lovely dog and would have been a travesty if he got out in the dangerous dog list as was suggested in the noughties. Another rescue my brother had was a bit aloof and we'd not let our kids ever be near it alone. Neither would my brother let it loose and he kept it well controlled.

There's a certain type of dog bred for status. The size of the dog and the type of person that wants one for it's status, means the wrong people (massive generalisation) are keeping the wrong dogs and the XL isn't controllable by many people that own them. Again with the gun similarity, in the wrong hands it's dangerous. XL's are also often bred by bad people who don't care about who buys them and how they'll be used or kept and looked after. Contrary to comments here, they're not cheap. Some sold for tens of thousands (really) and thus a dodgy market run by criminals exploiting registration loopholes exists. The "ban" on them is appropriate but I do feel sympathy for the owners that genuinely have a calm well behaved dog who is well trained and capable of being a good citizen.

I also wonder if COVID has meant these dogs didn't get the socialisation they needed as young dogs, fuelling the problem.

I think the point is that, since 2020, the majority of fatal attacks have been by Bully XLs. And that is FATAL attacks. How many have had life changing injuries, like my friend, from such attacks?

Why do you think these, and other dangerous dogs NEED to exist in domestic environments? What do these breeds provide, beyond some macho reinforcement, that can't be provided by other, less aggressive, breeds?

People die from stupidity, such as swallowing tooth picks, every year. To use that to justify introducing dangerous animals in to society is some what disingenuous to say the least.
