FIFA say that anyone bidding to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 must have at least 12 40,000 seater stadia and one 80,000 seater stadium for the final. As far as I know England fall short with 10 currently, and if you include the redevelopment of White Hart Lane that makes 11. Villa Park, Old Trafford, Eastlands, Anfield, Goodison Park, Emirates, St James' Park, Stamford Bridge, Stadium of Light, (White Hart Lane) Wembley Does that mean we will join in with Scotland/Wales or do you think that a team with a sub-40,000 seater stadium will have expanded their stadium by then? Can anyone thing of any stadia over 40,000 capacity that I have forgotten?
Elland Road and Hillsboro' is out by 186 seats which can easily be built somewhere and the new Stanley Park Stadium might be built by then which could be host to both scouse teams.
Just found this page and it says elland road is over 40,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_football_stadia_by_capacity
Stanley Park Stadium is a proposed title of the planned football stadium to be built in Stanley Park, Liverpool, England. The stadium was given planning permission in February 2003. The new stadium was scheduled to open in August 2012 with a capacity of 60,000, however construction has been halted until economic conditions improve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Park_Stadium
Sheffield United are expanding their stadium to 40,000 to be in contention for the World Cup stadiums.
Liverpool, Spurs and Everton all have plans in place to build new stadia with +40,000 seats. Derby and Middlesboro both have the stadia in place to make quick additions to take their capacity over 40,000 if warranted. Nottm Forest have plans in place to build a 50,000 seater new stadium if the WC bid is successful and Pompey want to go to over 40,000 if they're successful in being a World Cup city. And those all ignore the obvious candidates.
The great thing is about the WC in Germany is the fact they built 5 new stadiums for it, and they were all stunningly brilliant
They're not expanding yet. It's just the structure/foundations are in place for them to quickly add the required number of seats in the space of only a few months if needed. Personally I can't see Middleboro being a World Cup town.
