Why were we favourites for relegation?

For all of those happy with the apparent demise of QSF, here is a reminder of why were favourites to be relegated:
A new manager not tested in the premier league
A new team consisting of players who were not tested in the premier league or who had failed at their clubs in the premier league.
We were, and are, a tin pot club with previous relegations.

We all mocked the pundits when we did so well, but the informed journalists had us down for certain relegation as well. Without Leicester, our success would have been the story of the season.
So what was the secret to our survival for other promoted clubs to learn from? What did the manager do to make it all go so well?

Apparently in some parallel universe it didn’t!

The team did well despite the manager. They played the worst football seen in years at the Vic! (Maybe 3 years but, hey, fans have short memories) The team were surpassed by the fabulous entertainers from Bournemouth as we jettisoned such star performers like Vydra and Forestieri and ignored the potential superstars of Ibarbo and Diamanti. Then, to cap it all off the manager had the cheek to conspire to lose a semi final at Wembley to Crystal Palace who have double our wage bill.

Watford have not done well; they have had the worst season in living memory (Maybe 3 years, but Watford have apparently only existed since the Pozzos took over).

    You're saying nothing new...

You're either in the "we are staying up and a semi as well" or the "manager will take us down next season based on recent form" camp

West Ham, Spurs, Bournemouth, maybe even Stoke.

West Ham and Stoke have triple our wage bill. Spurs have 4 times ours. Their success should not be a story. Bournemouth I agree with.

That's true but there's no harm in trying to convert a few people to the correct side of the argument.

There's no correct side of the argument, it's all a matter of opinion at the moment.

Interesting that you sarcastically dismiss the recruitment and sale of attacking players who either didn't get a chance or 'weren't good enough'. Who's fault is that? The owners? The coach that wanted them in the first place? Did Flores not have a say? Or is it the owners fault that we started an FA Cup Semi Final with no strikers on the bench?

Or is it a case of 'not my choice so they aren't good enough' when it comes to Ibarbo, Diamanti, Berghuis and Vydra and so he laughably stuck with a rigid formation and tactic even when the wheels had fallen off and our attacking intent begins and ends with hoofing the ball forward to a converted attacking midfielder in the hope that the ball would bounce kindly for his wildly out of form striker, out of spite as opposed to thinking of the team?

  8. I don't usually like to be so dismissive when someone hasn't actually had a go at me, but this very much seems, in terms of the content and its construction, to be the perfect example of why it is not the best idea to post after a few tins.

    That said, I miss Kelso.

The pundits, experts and Journalists got it wrong not just with Watford this season mate, but with Chelsea ( who had the all conquering genius of Jose Mourinho still in charge), Man Utd ( who had broke the British transfer record), West Ham ( who were meant to be a rudderless ship without Sam Allardyce), Aston Villa ( who were meant to be heading for mid table comfort with future England manager Tim Sherwood in charge), Garry Monk ( another future England manager) and then there is Leicester ( tipped for relegation cos they appointed the hapless Claudio Ranieri a football simpleton who was out of touch with English football)

Lets face it. QSF has been great for us in keeping us up comfortably. That doesn't mean he has bored us fans in the second half of the season with a consistent dire style of play that has yielded a points average that would see us in the relegation zone next season if it was to continue. If he stays next season and will continue this form he will probably leave. So the message from this season is - dont believe the pundits all of the time because they dont predict the future they just guess the future then often copy each other in their predictions.

I wish Forestieri was still with us and I hope Vydra plays next season. I think the reason QSF got rid of few flair players was either because he deemed they weren't good enough or more likely he saw that they would not buy into his philosophy and would therefore be a problem in the dressing room.

You only have to look at Villa and Newcastle to see that a collection of flair players is not great for team morale. The fact that a lot of us can remember the times when Forestieri and Vydra chased back is a bad sign. We don't remember specific times when Deeney and Ighalo chase back because they do it every game.

There is a valid point amongst all of this. The football hasn't been as bad as many people would have you believe. It's funny they never actually equate the badness to anything. Zola's first year? The GT years? Or almost every other sodding year when it was actually pretty turgid?

Old and inaccurate statements about players that were fuelled by trolls like yourself. Makes the rest of your comments null and void.

With the greatest respect PO, watching via a stream and actually being there is like chalk and cheese. They've been bl**dy awful to watch for some time now, (Arsenal in the Cup being the stand out game). It reminds me of when Zola was, (in hindsight), losing the dressing room, the performances are just going down the pan. It's still not as bad as when Boothroyd was at his worst, but it's getting there. I don't mind the odd poor game if you can see where the improvements are coming from, but this team are bang in relegation form and getting worse weekly.

I agree that it has been painful to watch. Absolutely grim. But with a couple of decent forwards things could be very different. In my opinion QSF deserves the chance to prove he can identify such players. Yes he screwed up last time he tried to buy attackers, but I presume he was more focused on getting the defence sorted - which he achieved brilliantly.

But that being said, if he goes and we get some other foreigner in, I'll be happy with that too. Either way, we'll have a fair few new players next year for certain so it's exciting times whoever is in charge.

We were favourites for relegation because the pundits assumed we were just little old Watford like the last time we came up, and couldn't be bothered to do any research or give us much thought. It was an easy thing to say before moving on to talking about Man City or Arsenal.

Get used to it mate; anyone who gives their honest opinion on here, and dares to actually say what others are quite probably thinking, leaves themselves open to ridicule from those who think they know it all ::)

You claim in your post that Vydra and Forestieri didn't track back regularly whilst at Watford. This is an inaccurate statement used by trolls over the course of the last few seasons.
