    Why no Home Grown Buys?

    Have we gone too Continental?

We don't have enough HG players to name a full 25 man squad and yet we continue to be linked with mainly continental players, and very often with players with which Walter has a past with; we have to ask if Walter's knowledge of players is too limited!

Furthermore, why has WM we got rid of many of our British back room staff i.e. Dean Austin and Richard Collinge? (the medical man) to name just two. Take Dean Austin, surely he must have been a great link especially to our British, but also our Spanish speaking contingent of players, plus he was probably very knowledgeable about the British footballing scene, which on the face of it Walter does not seem to be. Also what was wrong with our medical man, does anybody know why he was sacked? I am quite convinced, though of course I don't actually know, that our sudden vast increase in injuries may well be linked to his departure.

This 'too expensive' thing annoys me. You can spend a few million at a time on some young players who are impressing in division 1 or 2 (maybe even championship) and it only takes one of them to have a semi-decent year in the prem and they're worth £25-30m. You only need a success rate of about 1 in 6 to cover the costs of bringing them in!

It could be foolish not to splash the cash, as losing our Premiership status would be far more expensive than paying out a little over the odds for British based players! The advantages of HG players are obvious, they should be able to hit the floor running, unlike most of the continental players we import. The HG's are familiar with the British style of football, so we would not have to worry if our foreign imports will adapt to playing in this country, as many don't.

After all why not speculate to accumulate, as we can afford to pay the bigger fees these days, that is as long as we remain a PL club, which at the end of the day is what counts, both football wise and financially as well.

Well that's lazy journalism for you, and you should know by now that the Head Coach doesn't have that much of a say with regards to player purchases - especially after QSF.

I do agree with you in part though and I would like to see some more British players arrive, then again, I imagine salaries and transfer fee's play a big role in that.

Our national team isn't rubbish ability wise it's a combination of:

    A) The FA are crap
    B) Rubbish managers
    C) Weak mentality
    D) No pride / lack of heart and desire to play for England.

To argue we lost to Iceland because their players are more talented than ours is a naive and silly argument.

I've seen English coaching close up. I suspect the Pozzos have as well. Hoofroyd is in charge of the England U20s and overviewing the U21's t FFS.

Am I mistaken or are we on a forum? If people didn't make threads, no matter how pointless sometimes, it wouldn't exist. You sound angry, I wonder what way you voted?

What about my post could possibly make you think I'm angry? I'm just bemused as to why someone would make a thread to ask questions that they obviously already know the answers to.

I'd argue this is a good time to raise this subject. There are British players performing very well in the Prem week in week out and they have often been signed from lower league sides for not that much money (bearing in mind the money available to Prem clubs now). I'd agree it's something we lack from our team, much like young hungry players that we are getting a brief glimps of now due to our injuries.

British players are too expensive for 2 reasons.
Academy level rules making it too expensive to run them and too cheap for top teams to poach.
Quota rules making uk players too prized.

Solution. Stop fecking about with rules and regulations. Let the market and national talent find it's own level and offer tax breaks ard protection against poaching to clubs that nurture talent.

I don't care where the players come from but I'm annoyed that we only seem to look at other teams outcasts rather thn poaching either young players or the best of lower teams. It's all down to money though and someone who a club don't need will be a lot cheaper then some clubs best player or rising star

The club (or rather the Pozzos) have a large number of players they have poached from lower clubs, they just happen to be non-British clubs. As the club begins to stabilize in the league I expect to see more Success types join Watford, up until now the club has generally favored experience which has worked reasonably well.

Now it's a fair criticism to say the club is missing out on the talent pool in British Leagues, hopefully the club will take more steps (rather than just appointing Dowling) to tap into it.

To say we only look at outcasts is completely unfair. Janmaat, Doucoure, Kabasele, Sinclair, Okaka were not rejects from their clubs.

So people wouldn't want the likes of Chalobah, Fabragas, Shane Long, Chambers, Berahino, Galloway, Will Hughes or Grealish ?

All home grown players that we would probably afford, with the majority not getting game time at their current club or would like to move up a division.

Agree with Meister, the cap on 18 overseas players has created a demand for home grown players, which has pushed the price up

  31. J.B

    J.B First Team

Honestly, no. Aside from Fabregas, who we would have absolutely no chance of getting or affording, they are all poor to average players who wouldn't improve us and would cost us much extra simply because they are homegrown.

  32. jw-

Berahino would once match fit, and I think Chalobah would be worth a risk for sure. Problem is, Berahino was valued at 20mil, and I would be (pleasantly) shocked if Chelsea would let Chalobah go for anything less than 13-15 mil.

  33. GoingDown

**** me, hasn't Berahino been non-match fit for about 3 years now?

  34. With A Smile

    So your saying that
Chalobah wouldn't be better than Capoue ?
Shane Long or Berahino wouldn't be better than Ighalo or Sinclaire
Chambers wouldn't add anything as a right back cover and can also cover at CB
Will Hughes or Grealish aren't creative ?
Galloway wouldn't be decent cover at LWB or as cover for Britos, the only left footed CB we have ?

None of them would be top 6 players, but we aren't a top 6 club. I believe they would all be better than some of the players we have, which then improves the squad
