change wings at half time. have you see the damage they're doing to the lines down the side. It's always the right wing, why not the left? probably worse here since we play on bog land these days but it does seem a simple answer to mussed up wings doncha think?
Because if they changed wings, they would have a new set of fans to give em stick - if they stay on the same side, supporters get bored of it somewhere early in the second half.
Probably so they can be equally influenced by the effects of the ground in both halfs. Not fair if one half they have a huge great big gust blowing in their face and fans behind them shouting and a big stand behind to confused them. Then the second couldn't feel the breeze due to the stand and no abuse etc etc. Just to make it equal i suspect.
Maybe they should put artificial turf down the line. Or maybe lino, sure they could get it it green or paint it green.
Its easy peasie The ref runs on a diagonal across the pitch so he is always at the opposite side to the lino. This is the strange but true bit..... Because the majority of players are right footed the ball spends more time down the right side of the pitch, yep folks its a fact, hence good left backs are in such high demand. Therefore in the scheme of probability the play will always be nearer an official than not. Bizarre but true
I always thought it was because linos are the spawn of Satin & they love causing trouble. That seems far more likely to me.
As you may know, I used to ref a bit, non league and I did a few Premier League 4th officials when the Southern League used to supply them in early days of Sky. I thought that Kevin Friend should have considered running "lefts" with the linos on the other touchline on Tuesday, as the Rous side lino was having trouble with the ploughed field he was running on and staying very wide indeed - no surprise I didn't think he had a great game. The problem is some refs don't practice changing their diagonal at all very much and feel out of place, as if they were brushing their teeth with thier "other" hand. They ought to, in cae of low sun, bad surfaces (Stevenage used to be awful where the tractor came on down one side). rowdy benches, etc etc. And at the Vic, if you run switch the linos around to run left wings, that places the Main Stand lino into the Technical areas and causes them problems too. So, to answer, there is no reason why it can't be done, it simply up to the ref.
If we want the ref to perform as well as possible, he should be allowed a system that suits him. Imagine the mistakes that Attwell would make if he had to think about which diagonal to run as well as thinking about how goals are scored.
