Once brought a Swedish friend to a game at the Vic and he informed us that the correct way of pronouncing Joel Ekstrand's name was Yo-el-eh Ek-eh-strand(trilled 'r')-uh.

Also worth remembering in light of our current situation that Guedioura featured for us that season as the result of two loan deals, one from November to December and the other from the end of February onwards - from there, he strongly helped drive us to promotion. We needed that injection of momentum from him back then, and we were a settled team with three strikers capable of scoring 20 a season in this division. Now, we do not have one. All this highlights just how imperative it is that we are not stagnant in the upcoming window.

    Maybe Cassetti though, loved him.

That video shows a string of passes of the type that none of our midfield are attempting this season.

Goodness, what a touch that man had.

I guess because every game wasn’t televised, and being out of the country, the promotion season for me was mostly Jon Marks and Derek Payne commentary, I didn’t see as 90 minutes out of that team as I would have liked. I really didn’t remember/appreciate properly how big of an in impact he had on our side.

That said, I can’t look beyond Abdi. A majestic footballer.

Abdi, Vydra, if we're allowed two.
But Deeney of then, not of now was a good goal scorer, and I'd have all three.
Watching the clips above and comparing the pace and positivity with now - dear oh dear.

We never replaced the greatness of Abdi. The premier league campaign was two years too late to show him in his Pomp. But his first season was truly remarkable. Without doubt the most talented midfield playmaker I have ever personally witnessed play for the hornets.

Ake? Overrated IMHO. Half the player that John McClelland was, but in terms of Pozzo signing if he could have kept him Fit Hall, Younis Kaboul was a more dominant defender.

Watson? Personal bias would prefer Eustace who was far better. But surely Doucoure smashes that.

Mo Johnson, a real "Fox in the Box" and I know he is not from the Pozzo era

I chucked Ake in there because he did a good job at left-back. Wasn't Eustace pre-Pozzo?

Abdi was class, no doubt. The most talented player we had in Pozzo Championship seasons imo. The question is, who would improve this team the most? Some will argue the quality is already there, we just need some leadership, others will argue we just need better players!

John Eustace was still with us for the first Pozzo season. He only made a few appearances, including one in the first Cup game at Man City (not the one where we went 2-0 up), but he was still club captain.

Abdi obviously. Vydra as well. Last night Vydra would have scored at least once

I think the obvious one is Ranegie, a natural goal scorer who would make all the difference.

If I could take 2, I’d take Jean Alain Fanchone for obvious reasons.

Agree with Fitz Hall. Proper centre half, could play and won the fight !!
Kaboul was a good player but could switch off tho ..

Fantastic player but IMO Barnes just shades it and those of an older vintage
might say Tony Currie like Pele or Best , Messi or Ronaldo or IMO Maradona

Not sure if this is an ironic post but his dead ball work was also absolutely rubbish... it was just slightly better than what we’ve got now.

Shirely your post implies that his inclusion to the latest squad would be an improvement.

ISTR his Eulogy Thread had details/stats (from @reids?) of just how many goals he was 'involved' in... If I get some time this afternoon I'll have a trawl...

I went for Vydra after all those fluffed chances against Norwich.

Not picking Abdi felt somehow wrong though.
