Yes, good author. But can he do it on a rainy night in…?

I don’t mind him but couldn’t bear the book. Awful. Mrs TuT loved it.
Without wanting to sound sexist, or ageist, but sounding both, I felt it was written about a bunch of pensioners, and targeting the 80 year old women market.

From what I have read so far I agree - or it could be targetting the under 9s .

Reminds me of when we went to see "The Mousetrap" in London. A truly awful play and for me is typical of Agatha Christie. We only went to see it because it was the longest running show in the world but of course that is what keeps it going.

An author I love is Herman Hesse. Read so much of his work and visited his birthplace in Calw Germany years ago when holidaying in the Black Forest

Robert Goddard, John Connolly and Tim Weaver are my go to page turner/thriller reading- Connolly's Charlie Parker books all have a touch of the macabre which set them apart from your standard detective novel

Thursday Murder Club was vapid drivel mostly. If it was a dessert, it would be angel delight. Bland, sickly and instantly forgotten

My wife loves all sorts of murder mystery stuff....Agatha Christie, Harlan Coben etc, but she found it very poor.

As for some interesting reading whilst on hols, I'm currently halfway through 'Early Medieval Britain c.500-1000' by Rory Naismith....any takers? Probably not! Soon to be followed by 'From Caledonia to Pictland: Scotland to 795' by James E. Fraser. That is the sort of stuff I actually take to read on holiday!

Something like my 150th book on the history and collapse of Yugoslavia.

    I should probably diversify.

I'm not a great lover of fiction but I enjoyed The Death of the Fronsac by Neal Ascherson recently.
And if you want something to keep you seething from start to finish I strongly recommend Tom Bowyer's study of Meghan and Harry - Revenge.
My current lavatory book is The Shipping Forecast by Nic Compton - everything you ever wanted to know about, erm, the shipping forecast

I read mostly non-fiction these days. Just finishing Cosmos by Carl Sagan and starting Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Both highly readable

Never read one of the classics and probably never will. Really not my cup of tea. Prefer true crime or thrillers. Karin Slaughter is good for thrillers and currently reading a book on Denis Nielson, I do love a serial killer. I'm also 5 books through the Enemy series written by Charlie Higson. Very good if getting a little bit strange

A friend of mine went to see that for the same reasons and was similarly unimpressed.
In contrast, I recently went to see “Witness for the Prosecution” at County Hall and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Book Thief remains my favourite ever book.

    Wonderfully written, very emotional.

What a wonderful character Liesel Meminger is.

    My heroine.

Just about to start The Wager by David Grann. Heard nothing but good things about this. Mutiny, shipwreck murder. What's not to like.

The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene at bedtime. Six Easy Pieces by Richard Feynman on the train as it's not heavy.

Just finished The Enemy series of books by Charlie Higson. If you like apocalyptic style books, it's well worth a read

I remember reading that many years ago and enjoying it, even though I can't remember anything about it. Might be an age thing :(

Currently re-reading 'The Fate Of Rome: Climate, Disease & The End Of An Empire' by Kyle Harper. An extremely interesting evaluation of some of the reasons for the 'Fall Of The (Western) Roman Empire'. I first read it soon after its publication in 2017 & one of the main themes in the book is Nature's facility to conjure pathogens deadly to humans almost as in those Martini ads: 'Any time, any place, anywhere.' Seeing as how Covid19 was invisibly approaching it is now striking me as a worryingly prescient read!

Thoroughly recommend Maurice and Marilyn by Sophie Elmhirst. It's a true story about a very ordinary couple who decide to have an adventure and sail round the world. All is going well until a whale puts a hole in their yacht and they have to abandon ship in the middle of the Pacific....
