We had Chris Froome winning the Tour de France for the fourth time. Anya Shrubsole bowling out the Indians in Bothamesque style. Our ladies football team beating the tika-taka Spaniards 2-0. And a great final round in the Open (THE Open mind - not any other sort of second rate Open). Albeit that didn't involve one of ours and the other blemish was the Scots ladies losing out to the Portuguese 1-2.

I'm always impressed by a match winning performance when the chips are down. Shrubsole's bowling and Spieth's final nine. Interestingly, despite appearing to be the 'personification of cool', Spieth admits to nervousness. But somehow he harnesses that to his advantage. If only we could bottle that sort of stuff. Whatever it is ...

And 2 gold medals in the pool at the Swimming World Championships!

Some rather harshly commented next summer we will be let down by the footballers in Russia!

Also on Sunday the England women's hockey team qualified for the World League final in New Zealand (November) with a 3rd place final win over Argentina.

The Men qualified for their World League final in India (in Dec) a few weeks previously (oddly enough also after playing Argentina).

I went up to Royal Birkdale for round 1 on Thursday. What a fantastic day it was. I'd highly recommend a trip to the open for anyone. Watching the final 3 days on TV after you've walked most of the holes is so much better.
