...you might have a doubleclick cookie that's a pain in the harris

    Simple fix for PC users:

    1. Click Start / My Computer and explore
    2. Navigate to : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
    3. Double click on hosts
    4. Select Notepad from the list and click Ok
    5. It will open you a new window
    6. The last line should be : 127.0.0.1 localhost
    7. Clic after localhost and click Enter to get in the new line
    8. Type : 127.0.0.1ad.doubleclick.net
    9. Go to File → Save
    10. Exit

This will block all connection ad.doubleclick.net tries to make to its server, so all pop-ups should be permanently gone now. You can also add :

    127.0.0.1ad.doubleclick.net
    127.0.0.1ad.doubleclick.com

Windows 7 & 8 users may need to put a space between the ip address & ad is:

    127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
    127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.com

Can't edit system files in win7 without using a permissions hack ... shame really as this would be good

    Slightly related IT query:

My laptop no longer starts up when the power button is pushed, which I initially put down to the battery as for a while it has not been holding its charge very long. However, despite buying a new battery and leaving on a long initial charge the problem is still ongoing. When the button is pushed the light comes on for a split second, the screen flickers and then nothing, not a sound from the machine.

Any ideas? - new CPU? Worth fixing?

I haven't a clue about this sort of stuff

Sounds not good ... press delete repeatedly after switching on to see if you can get into the BIOS ... if not it is probably a hardware or power supply problem. If it's not too old and has a good spec it will be worth fixing ... if not you will need help to retrieve your data.

Thanks for that. I've just tried doing that but there's no sign of life after that split second when the power button is pushed. I've read somewhere else to take the battery out and push the power button for 20 seconds to 'clear' something, but that hasn't worked either. I think you're right on the hardware and looks like I'll be taking it in somewhere.

It had crossed my mind that it might be a problem with the charger as there is a light next to the mains input that turns white when charging but it has been glowing red very quickly. I did try my work laptop charger in there but it made no difference when I tried turning the laptop on

    Thanks again
