Why do think it just offends Muslims? Why do you think ‘offence’ is even the biggest issue?

This is about encouraging extremism, which as we’ve seen from Jo Cox’s murder, is a very real threat. That should upset you, not just someone else. That’s like saying nutty hate cleric only offends Christians so let it go.

I agree about Blair, but Trump has plenty of time left. Would you like to bet he has nothing as stupid and dishonest up his sleeve? You’d be brave to.

There were a lot of allegations, yes. Many clearly spread by Russian bots. Despite being out of power I don’t see Clinton facing charges at the moment.

Agreed and we do need to be careful what is alledged.

Can we reach an accord that neither candidate was wholly satisfactory.

  5. Moose

No, not really. It’s that thinking that got you this one.

A criticism of Trump comes up for frankly astonishing behaviour and you pipe up saying ‘yeah, but look at the other one’. Not only irrelevant, but you can’t even say why.

Have you not got it yet that this whataboutism is how populism works?

One is fake, i.e. attributed incorrectly and two feature Muslims behaving badly.

Other religions with flawed and violent people are available.

I'm not defending or condoning Trump's silly message - which, like so much of what he does, is unfitting behaviour for the President of the US or, indeed, anyone in high office anywhere in the world. I just don't happen to think that this latest act of idiocy is worthy of the coverage it is receiving. In fact, the whole thing is almost laughable. Do you really think anyone is going to act any differently after watching a video that supposedly shows 'Muslims beating up a dutch cripple'? Maybe I have too much faith in human nature but I can't see too many people rushing off to their local mosque with burning torches because Trump has tweeted that rubbish

Why does he bother posting this sort of stuff then? Surely he could use his time more constructively if doing this is so futile?

Don't get me wrong. I'm no Trump supporter. I would have voted Hillary if I had a vote. Not because I support her but because I support Trump less.

I tried to answer the initial surprise by suggesting that there wasn't more anti Trump posting maybe becasue we've heard it all and just ignoring him now, not that we're agreeing with it. It's by no means support or defence of what he said or does so please don't take it that way.

Fair point. As a non-twitterer I probably don't understand the incredible power it has to bend people's minds!

FBI stats have conclusively shown a meteoric rise in attacks on US based Muslims since Trump started stirring the pot in the election cycle.

Since Trump was inaugurated, the KKK and the American Nazis (see: Charlottesville) have become orders of magnitudes more emboldened and active.

Words have power, especially when wielded by someone sitting in the white house. There's a reason the Nazis were so into propaganda: it works. It's proven to work. For us to sit here and dismiss the impact of spreading lies and disinformation by mass media isn't just incorrect, it's downright dangerous. We're certainly not quite so blase about ISIS propaganda.

I see Trump's tweeting as just another aspect of his ludicrous and unstatesmanlike behaviour but, of course, it could be part of something more sinister. I hope not

Sad to hear that increasing numbers of British knuckle-dragging f***wits have joined Britain First on the back of Trump's tweets. That means even more of them demonstrating their awful command of the English language to complain that 'them foriners should speak English like what we do' and calling for an uprising to 'take are country back'.

If you want see the sort of pond life who are attracted to Britain First and the like, look up the 'Spell Check A Racist' group on Facebook.....

US media outlets (quite incredibly, INCLUDING right wing extremist propaganda site Breitbart) reporting that Flynn is to testify that Trump directed him to talk to Russia.

If true (and given that even Breitbart are reporting it, it seems almost concrete), this is the beginning of the end.

EDIT: hearing now that apparently Flynn has signed a plea deal under oath, meaning even if he dies in the near future, it's still admissible evidence at this point.

He's going down. If you're too far gone to see it, that's your own problem.

Only the partisan and the ignorant can't see it at this point, and only the ignorant expected him to be gone inside a week. Investigations take time, more so when you're going after a literal head of state who is quite possibly immune to prosecution while in office.

Make snide comments all you want in the interim. It won't change the outcome.

Can’t wait until he goes and takes his loathsome entourage, his mad wife and horrible children with him.

He can go off, die a failure and tweet off into racist dementia.

Sadly, there will be ghouls a plenty to take over and even when they are gone the Democrats need to offer more than BAU.

But it will still be something to celebrate. Every bit of ignominy gathered by Trump/Farage/Johnson will be well deserved.

Roy Moore spectacularly defeated in the Alabama special election last night; bear in mind this was a state which voted Trump by 30 points. A Democrat getting elected to the Senate there is unheard of in the modern political climate; I think you have to go back 25 years or more.

While much of Moore's under-performance is down to his paedophilia/sexual assault scandal, there's certainly a part of it which reflects on Trump. Republican safe areas in special elections have been surprisingly vulnerable since Trump got elected and, while Moore is the first (and falling from a 30 point electoral lead, enormous) casualty, this bodes very ill for any races that are usually closely contested.

It's quite likely to be a bloodbath in the 2018 midterms. Expect the Democrats to take one (if not both) of the Chambers if this trend holds (Senate is more likely at present).

The amusing implication of the Democrats taking the House is, if Mueller finds something incriminating on Trump (which is looking increasingly likely given the massive plea deals given to Flynn and Papadopoulous) and Pence is implicated in the crossfire, Nancy Pelosi would end up as US President. I cannot imagine the fallout if that scenario happened. Highly unlikely, but it would be a political drama for the ages (and almost certain to lead to enormous tensions in the US).

I know it's a pretty big scalp, but, the Democrats had to spend a fortune to get it. I'm assuming that the big Republican donors will be lining up to fill the party coffers after the proposed tax-cuts - just in time for the mid-terms.

Looking at the maps on this (notably "Reported Vote Margin" - can't link)

Birmingham is 75% black, give or take.

Jones will almost certainly lose his seat in 2020 but that's not really the point; losing a seat with a 30 point lead bodes horribly for the coming election cycles.

The one thing the Republicans have going for them is they are defending far less seats than the Democrats in 2018, because if the reverse was true it would be a bloodbath.

Part of the reason Obama wn is he energized the African American voters to get out and vote. Part of the reason Hillary lost is the African American voters went to sleep on her. The ONLY reason Moore lost is the African American voters Came out in droves against him and THAT was a moment of empowerment which will remind them of how powerful a voting block they can be. Expect that to be playing a role going forward.

A senior staff writer for The Hill reckons Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray met with Paul Ryan today at their own request, something that is completely abnormal.

This almost certainly means something big is coming.
