The concept of freedom of speech is so misunderstood by many. It means you can say what you want without fear of the Government censoring you. It doesn't mean you can say what you want with no repercussions from other citizens. The only time freedom of speech is relevant is when discussing the unfolding relationship between the speaker and the government of the country they are in. Interactions between private citizens or demonstrations from private citizens about events in another country are well outside the bounds of a freedom of speech issue. Freedom of speech is a purely theoretical concept anyway. There is no country in the world that actually has full freedom of speech.
Can I just say that Piers Morgan is such a ****. It is so transparent that his support of Donald Trump (and Kevin Pietersen for that matter) is purely because they have deigned to be his 'friend'. What a toad.
Piers just wants to be loved, bless 'im. I was quite amused reading about JK Rowling tearing some strips off him. She's pretty ****ing savage.
I enjoyed watching Piers get flipped off live by Jeffries. Th Rowling tiff was just the cherry on top.
I'd forgotten just how awful Morgan is (isn't he staying away from Blighty as there's a chance that he's going to get his collar felt over hacking revelations*, let alone he's in the sights of Levenson pt II). I was very disappointed who Maher let him get away with his streams of ****. Funny thing I learnt this weekend was that Glenn Beck (who's undergone a Damascene conversion to less insane views) "owns" TheBlaze - which is home to alt-right eye-candy Tomi Lahren (who was, unsurprisingly, awful on Maher's show last week) and her contract's up so she'll be doing lots of panel shows. Also there was a lovely bit in the Eye pointing out that at the State banquet during the State visit the invitee proposes quite a few guests - cue all of those free-thinking UK Trump supporters breaking bread with the Queen and PM: Piers Morgan, Nigel Farage, Katie Hopkins... *This may be related to JK Rowling's ire.
I suspect I am in danger of replying mid thread to an already answered and forgotten post, but here goes. I do believe that freedom of speech has to be uncompromising, otherwise you end up in a situation where the prevailing political opinion defines what is and what isn't acceptable. People should be allowed to openly deny the holocaust or preach extremist Islam, but the rest of us should feel responsible to shout them down and call them ****ing idiotic *****.
They don't "deserve" it, certainly, as by denying that a historically documented event didn't happen is simply an abuse of that privilege, but I believe that you have to allow people to speak their bull****, ironically, in order to prevent such a controlled and narrow public mindset which allowed people to think that exterminating human beings was "OK." It's all or nothing with freedom of speech, as otherwise you have to have an arbiter of what is or isn't acceptable and as soon as that person turns out to be Hitler or Mao then you're ****ed.
Agree that you cannot have "half" freedom of speech. However that freedom is not without consequences. First others can give as good as they get. Secondly slander laws protect people against incorrect and defamatory speech that causes harm. So you can say what you like but have to be prepared for the reaction.
US Intelligence confirms contact between multiple unnamed members of Trump's team and Russian Intelligence during the year leading up to the election. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/...nytcore-iphone&smid=nytcore-iphone-share&_r=0 This is right on the heels of Flynn "resigning" (let's face it, he was pushed) over breaking the law and contacting Russian state officials before Trump even assumed office. This is going to be a ****storm.
This whole thing nails the idiocy of the 'ooh you haven't given Trump a chance brigade'. This is going to be the most corrupt and compromised administration in US history. If we avoid WW3 and rioting in every major US city it will be a marvel. Flynn is an extraordinary incompetent and racist elevated by sheer happenstance to Govt. Lunatics/asylum. Trump needs to be handled with tongs and oven gloves by the Govt.
Multiple Republican Senators now pushing for an investigation, and you can bet your house and pension that all of the Democrats will too. EDIT: some media outlets now reporting that US allies have also intercepted communication between Trump's team and Russia. Good lord. http://www.newsweek.com/allies-intercept-russia-trump-adviser-communications-557283
I said more recently that he'll be gone (by hook or by crook (which he is of course)) in a quarter of that time. We'll see.
You're basically presuming he will resign then? As there's no other process to remove him which will be complete within 6 months.
Quite possibly. I just don't think that he'll have the stomach to stay with a political process which stymies him at every turn. As a dictator, he'll not be used to that at all. In his first week he could be the dictator with his executive orders. At the end of the second week that started to slow down. In the third week he was seriously challenged and now the whole thing is grinding towards inertia and ridicule. Not his bag at all. And of course there's always one other way of removing an incumbent president from office in the great American tradition.
Who watched that horror show yesterday? Is anyone who watched that press conference going to try to defend that narcissistic ignorant bozo?
The bit with the Jewish reporter is just gobsmacking. The bloke lobs Trump an open goal to underline his plans to fight antisemitism and instead he goes off on one.
Yeah, but you haven't given him a fair chance yet. And I'm going to keep on saying that four another four years of this guff.
That press conference was a complete train wreck. But again you have to look at it with the mindset of what is the other hand doing? It's a distraction, pure and simple, from the crap going on in the background. He made an absolute fool of himself and now people are talking about it instead of paying attention to other scandals.
From what I've heard the latter would be more Smartie than Lollipop. Trump's been accused on this forum of being a 'massive bell-end' which is obviously ridiculous ...
I think at this point, only the most deluded of people would think "more Russian stuff" requires a tinfoil hat.
