WBA are still being linked with a strong interest in signing Troy, but they are apparently unwilling to pay more than around £20m. However, as Walsall have a 20% sell on clause, that would leave us only £16m net. At that price I do not think it would be worth letting him go.

I think if WBA were to offer the £25m buy out clause Troy has in his contract that would be more like it, as that would give us £20m net, which not be unreasonable, and I reckon we should hold out for that figure at the very least.

I don't have a negative malaise, and ok my reaction was excessive for which I apologise.

I look at things objectively and my feeling is time to thank Troy and let him move on. He's not the same player from last season, he's lost a couple of yards pace, he doesn't bully defenders anymore and he's not as creative.

He's in his footballing prime but seems to have regressed. The comparison to the Zola period is moot as he had someone like Vydra who scared defenders with his pace and ran the channels and created space for him and he did likewise.

He doesn't do it anymore because he looks knackered after making a run and if he makes a channel run, he doesn't bust a gut to get in the box.

If we could get the old Deeney back, I wouldn't have a problem, but I just don't think it's there anymore.

I would take 20 mill. I know not much but can only see his value going down and tbh if he is starting 11 in Aug we will have problems

Think it largely depends on style of football. If Silva is going to give him a striking partner again and give him some service, he'll stick around.

If it's one up top again like with much of this season, he'll be off. He wore the frustration of such little support this season very openly.

I for one hope he stays and recaptures the sort of form he showed in the recent years prior to this campaign.

I think it would be a shame to see him go, this season hasn't been great for anybody so dont really think we can judge him based on this.

£35m seems like a lot , a couple of years ago that would have brought a top, top striker

Exactly. Watford fans have short, short memories and low IQs though.

We are also stuck with him for another 4 years costing over a reported £5 million a year, if we can get £20 million take their hands off for it, I am sure we can find another penalty taker for less than that

Wow some of the comments on here about Deeney are incredible - you would think we were talking about Jamie moralee !!

    Deeney prem stats

    75 apps 23 goals (9 pens) 11 assists

This season - with no real partner to speak of 37 apps 10 goals (3 pens) 3 assists

Last season - with ighalo as support
    38 apps 13 goals (6 pens) 8 assists
I think we would all agree Deeney could of had 3 or 4 more goals if ighalo could pass !!

I think Troys done a fine job as a footballer for us but give the guy some support and he will deliver - yes he has his faults and limitations but I think the finger pointing at his performances is a bit harsh given the team tactics this season and the crap service.

It's easy to find fault but I can't think of anyone who we could get who is better right now.

Well said. Deeney may well move on, but we should never forget how good he has been for this club over the years.

Benteke is a brilliant header of the ball , Deeney is poor . Great at winning flick on s but poor at scoring with his head . Even in his prime he didn't score many headers .

I'd say Rondon and Deeney are about the same level

Many promoted clubs have one or two totems who spearhead their promotion, come up to the Prem with them and remain as servants through the rest of their career, using both their on pitch-influence and the weight of their experience and relationship with fans and club to help stabilise the team in the division and remain playing in the Prem, eventually winding down their top level career there. I'm thinking of players like Rory Delap at Stoke and Leon Britton at Swansea.

As long as Deeney isn't throwing his considerable weight around  demanding this, that and the other forever, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't stay for the foreseeable future and continue to contribute with minutes and goals until he feels it's time to take a step back/down, presumably somewhere in his early 30s.

Right now he can still operate as a main man on the pitch, and I'd love to see him even get back to the performance levels and numbers of last season, when he showed he could operate effectively in the Prem. As time goes by fancier and more complete strikers will hopefully arrive, but it doesn't have to mean anything for Troy's position here, other than that he will be competing to get into an even better team.

The clubs new marketing for the Executive Club uses Gomes and Prodl, not Deeney. Maybe he is not 'executive' enough! Will be interesting to see if he is used to promote the new kit.

Frankly, I think you're spot on about not being executive enough; they picked players who they thought would appeal in looks and image to the kind of fans willing to spend the kind of hospitality money. Prodl is obviously good looking and Gomes is the sort of 'mature adult' of the gang. They're not even actually there are they, they've just put studio shots of them into a promotional shot.

Kit shots will also be interesting because we've seen a million times talismans and key players get used in the promotions only to be sold before the season starts, so it could go either way even if he is used.

Okay, the talk about how are we going to possibly replace a 10 goals a year striker is ridiculous. There are dozens of leagues in dozens of countries and you don't think the Pozzo network could find ONE striker with an inkling of pace or agility that would be willing to come into the side? Just because you and I can't think of easy replacements off the tops of our heads doesn't mean the full-time professional football scouts and staff can't.

Also, calling him a 10-goal-a-season striker is somewhat misleading. 30% of his goal total this year has been penalties. Over a quarter. If Capoue had been taking penalties instead of Deeney they would've switched goal totals and Capoue would be top scorer, and Capoue isn't even a good attacker. Deeney could have a better total but I remember quite a few occasions this year where he's missed absolute sitters or failed to get on the end of a great ball. Sure, Deeney has been bereft of quality service (goodness knows having Amrabat on the wing hasn't helped), but a good striker creates chances instead of sitting about waiting for them to be given to him. We're never going to play proper attacking football with a painfully slow striker with no agility or guile to speak of.

I don't mean any of this as an insult to the man himself or the work he has put in for Watford in the past, but he is simply not performing at a high enough level to merit a place in our starting IX. I wouldn't mind seeing him stick around but I hope a better option comes in to take his place as regular starter if he does. If he cant accept being 2nd or 3rd choice, then I'd rather bank 30 million quid than see him trot around the pitch for another season.

I don't totally disagree with you on TD, but again I think Silva should make the decision. TD was definitely not the player he has been in the past last season, but could that have been due to the relationship he had with Mazzarri?

If Silva has anything like the assessment course over the Summer, thatI suggested in another thread, hopefully TD can get his MoJo back and impress Silva.

However, if Troy is still looking as lack lustre as last season, then maybe it's time for him to go. TD could well go on and rip up trees at another club? However if he does, it does not mean he would have done the same here at WFC, because sometimes a player just needs a new challenge and needs to move on, or possibly stagnate if he stays put.

I think a lot of this will come down to Troy. If he feels that he's done as much as he can and would like to be closer to home then the time is right. If he however, feels as though he has a point to prove and comes back a lot leaner and fitter and looking like a footballer and not his boxing mate I'm all for him.

I would rather him stay, but I agree with Knight GT. Look at what happened to Iggy the start of the season just gone...
Where did their partnership spark go? They almost had no fare on the pitch like the previous season and yes part of me was sad to see him go after such an impressive initial premiership (first half).

Troy has always been our version of Southampton's Loe Tissier or Manchester United's Giggs. He has been with us through quite a bit and a lot of change in management also. If Silva and Troy sit down and talk it out, I am sure they can find his place in the lineup, even if it's sub status for a while until he gets back into his old self again. Maybe time is just what he needs.

I think that's just what Deeney looks like at the end of the season of looking after his body and doing some cardio. Give him the summer of, let him have have a summer of eating steak 3 times a day and lifting weights in his sleep and he'll back to the Akinfenwa wannabe we know.

I sill love Deeney too. But if you only see him as a squad player we might as well take the £20-35m on offer as that's a lot of dosh for a squad player regardless of Walsall's cut.

  35. sea hornet

    sea hornet Academy Graduate

All this about 20m etc, take 20% cut from it leaves £16m, to get a squad player home grown your looking at least 5-10 if they end up being a flop your looking at replacing them, then you need to find someone who can guaretee you goals, a new leader, your looking easily spending more then the £16M
