John Sheridan has today been appointed as manager of Swindon Town. Incredibly, this is the fourth team he has managed in 2020 alone. Following a fairly normal start, when he had 2-3 year spells at Oldham, Chesterfield and Plymouth, in the last five years he has had ten managerial appointments and he was only sacked from three of those jobs. In all the other cases he resigned to immediately take up another position elsewhere. Here is his recent record: Oct 2015 - Newport Jan 2016 - Oldham May 2016 - Notts County (sacked Jan 2017) Jan 2017 - Oldham (sacked Sep 2017) Feb 2018 - Fleetwood Jun 2018 - Carlisle Jan 2019 - Chesterfield (sacked Jan 2020) Jul 2020 - Waterford Sep 2020 - Wigan Nov 2020 - Swindon Is this a record?
Another manager who keeps getting jobs without really doing enough to earn it. One or two decent seasons at Oldham (for them, helped that he was a fan favourite) and a League 2 win at Chesterfield, both around a decade ago and near the start of his career, and that’s pretty much it.
One of my best mates from uni is originally from Oldham so he went over from Leeds quite often. Went with him to a game against Peterborough, the original had been abandoned so they let everyone in for free, was Sheridan's first game of his 3rd permanent spell there, and with their best crowd of the season it was a great occasion, turned out to be the start of their great escape from League 1 (the last one before they got relegated the next season anyway!)
Thanks for that, always interesting to read about lower league fans. Oldham are one of the more obscure clubs especially to the younger generation of Watford fans (we haven’t played them in the league since the 1997-98 2nd division title winning season, can’t remember if we’ve played them in any of the cups) but during their glory years of the 1970s-90s they were one of the more notable small clubs, spending 23 consecutive seasons in the top two tiers, getting to two FA Cup semis and a League Cup final, and spending three seasons in the top flight which included one of the greatest escapes in Premier League history. But sadly that kind of thing isn’t sustainable in the modern football era unless you’re lucky to have someone rich and famous who truly loves the club...
I coached a girl at Gosling and her dad was from Oldham and an Athletic fan. Very nice chap and very tall. Didn't Holden play for Oldham?
