Prior to kick off last night, I felt completely isolated from the football, which I think had an impact on others. Normally as the music of 3 counties and the subsequent commentary of the duo of Oxley and Price kicks in, I like to think my housemates are well aware ‘there is a game on’. Last night, for a change they could have been forgiven for thinking it was any old Tuesday night before an exam.

The internet still being broken meant there was no 3 Counties Radio, no sky sports news centre, no BBC updates. All I had was good old Teletext unfortunately for me, the signal was poor which meant Watford became W t rd and I could only just make out the starting line-ups.

For the next 13 minutes I went back to staring at bits of paper with words on that I was supposed to know for the following morning (today). Giving into temptation I had a quick peak at teletext

At this point I thought teletext was having a laugh at my expense, I couldn’t see the Watford score but it appeared Emerton had scored an own goal. I was reluctant to get overly excited because this had happened before, only for the goal not to be an own goal (and for us to be 1.0 down, not 1.0 up). Desperately trying anything to get a better reception I had the brain wave to switch to BBC2, perfect, crystal clear teletext the result.

Getting bored of revision, and foolishly thinking it was 1.0 at halftime forgetting teletext is about 10 minutes behind I went downstairs. Havign left teletext on, and to my horror it appeared a goal had been scored sometime during half time. Boy did I swear. ‘Bloody typical’ and ‘what’s the point in being excited in a lead when we throw it away’ were just some of the thoughts, but by now I was hooked and addicted to teletext. Then joy of joys which to someone who doesn’t like football I can only describe as being the quick beat of the heart when you are at school and girl you have had your first crush on says hi for the first time. You know the one I mean, the good ‘urgh my heart feeling’.

By 9.45 Teletext still said the game was 2.1 and although the game should have ended 15 minutes before I was not going to assume. My housemate on wireless text me to say he knew the final score, I think I then declared my love when I found out we had actually won, and then proceeded to punch the air with joy. The result was further confirmed when I received texts of ‘well done’ and a call from my dad from which all I could make out yells of ‘yellow army’

I don’t know how we played, except from what my dad said which was ‘fantastic’ and that we ‘should have won by more’. But reports on how we played are for those at the game, this is about the emotions associated with relief, and re-gaining a bit of pride at last.

Thanks for commets as always :D

    Good read this.

I feel similar pain up here in Manchesterland at times. Luckily or unluckily I had Sky Sports News on Freeview so I could get an idea of what was happening. I'd started to forget what celebrating a win was like until last night! My excessive celebrations are a thing of legend up here (especially when I was a student).
