Watford winger Tommy Smith will travel with the squad on the pre-season trip to Spain, despite a shin injury and uncertainty over his club future.

The 29-year-old has previously been linked with a move to Watford's Championship rivals Sheffield United.

But it is believed that Smith would prefer to link up with former Hornets' boss Brendan Rodgers at Reading.

Smith missed Saturday's testimonial win at non-league Wealdstone to rest his shin problem.

Manager Malky Mackay is taking 25 players to Spain for a week-long training camp, and said: "There are three or four reasons the trip is imperative.

"We have a new group coming together with a new management team, so you get time together to build relationships.

"You are able to train them in quality sessions, with rest and recovery, without domestic situations happening as they do.

"I myself flew out to Spain, near the end of last season, and looked at every aspect of the trip, so I personally know everything about it.

"It gives us a chance to build relationships among the players and staff, and also test ourselves in a couple of games against international opposition where you are playing against different types and different techniques. I think it's always going to help."
