I don't care who we don't sign because we won't meet their wage demands. Therefore, if CJ wants to go to Charlton or Sheff Utd because they'll pay him silly money, then they are welcome to him and to the financial noose that will be round their necks next year when they are in the Championship.
I agree. It'd be stupid to sign someone asking for astronomical wages - if we learned anything from the bald Italian era it's that it's the wage bill that cripples a club, not the transfer fees.
doesn't do much for relationships with other players either. it's good that we won't compromise our principles.
There is truth in what you both say but we have to be honest and admit that £20k/week is not silly money for a Premiership striker. It is silly money for a Championship striker and that is the issue. Do we pay up and gamble or pass on this one? Given our financial history I personally do not think that we have to take the gamble - CJ is not that good but only time will tell.
The only thing is Berko is something you alluded to on another thread - the idea of how things can be moved about to still give him what he wants without breaking the salary cap. Say it's a cap of £16k/wk and he wants this £20k/wk over the next 2.5 seasons. So that's a difference of £520,000. We could offer to pay him £260k the day he signs as a sweetner and agree to pay another £260k on completion of the contract. Or we could offer to pay the whole £520k up front now. That way our liability would be over and he will still be within the wage budget. The negative of that is obvious - we could pay him all that money and watch him walk out the door in June.
Absolutely. If Aidy really wants him then he will find a way to satisfy him. My initial reaction though is that he would be coming here for the wrong reasons.
I think it's a two way street. We can't pay silly money and someone demanding silly money is a greedy *******. However, if we don't pay him what he feels he's worth (and if that valuation is not far off what the market says he should get) we could be viewed as not rating him. This guy would be top choice striker in a PrL club. 20k is not too bad - but it's too much for us. I like the sign on fee/contract completion fee idea. Basically CJ has two issues with signing for us. Wages and league position. SO - sign-on fee and release clause could fix that. Give him the difference between his current wage and - say Marlon's - up front, and put in a clause saying he can go for what we paid for him if we go down. That way we won't get burnt and neither will he.
AB has always been sure of the type of player he wants to sign and it hasn't been the type who hold out for the max. pay. Whoever he signs has got to be hungry and want to play for us. That's why we are better off with players who have something to prove, like Moses A, whichever division we are buying for. As for CJ, we all saw him hit the side netting of an open goal on Saturday (well I didn't as everyone was standing up and I couldn't see, but I gather that's what happened). If we don't sign him, I won't be too downhearted.
CJ can feck off and drown in the Thames - greedy little shirt lifter. It is the same principal branded on Connolly and Smith where some supporters are very unforgiving. Can it work both ways -players in are accepted, players out are not?
I doubt that you are a woman basher or a wife basher so with your knowledge of the good book i assume you are a bible basher OM
It's not only the financial burden but the negative effect this type of contract can have on other players. Would we want a fit Marlon King to earn less after what he has already achieved for us. We'd still be fizzy pop if it wasn't for MK.
LOL Budfrog - you are right, our squad is at peace and living in harmony - some double dutch twot thinks that he can become Mr Big without earning the right can burger off. If he said - " pay me £500k if i score 10 goals between signing and end of season or if we say up £1 million because i scored 10 or more. then he will have earned the money. He's 21 and plays for foolham - not exactly setting the world on fire. Mr Greedy can stay put or go to Warnock's Winker wonderland.
Could still happen if he drops his wages demands. he doesn't want to go North and Charlton haven't followed up. as it stands now he accepts a drop in money and comes here or rots at flem, but there are still 26 days to go.
