    tribalfooball.com - March 07, 2007

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is eyeing Watford striker Marlon King.
The News says Redknapp is a big admirer of the Jamaica international, who suffered a major knee injury early into the Premiership season.

NOT SURE HOW TRUE BUT ...

Tribal Football = rehashed rumours. Can't see anything in this myself. Maybe next January though if he's back fit and scoring and we're not in the top half.

well he is good enough for this league, so who knows?

I see no sense in a rumour about a player that has not played for most of this season. I just can't see it happening.

What exactly has Harry been eying? Marlon on crutches, then Marlon in a suit shouting at the crowd?

I think its just tribalfootball digging up an old quote from Redknapp and creating a new story to populate their website, cant see anything in this. Well, I hope there isn't anyway!

    More likely scenario.................

I agree with UEA, if that was the case it would be a distinct possibility :dismay: , but not this summer!!!

I hope this doesn't happen, but I can see it is possible.

Portsmouth have plenty of cash and we have up and comming players to replace the king. If we get a bid for a few Million come the transfer window next christmas, then unless the other strikers are firing blanks then he may be on his way.

If Portsmouth want to bid for the start of next season then either:

    • It will be small money and likely not accepted
    • It will be big money, a huge risk (madness) on an untested player after a long layoff. They will probably have their hand bitten off at about 5M.

  9. berkshirehorn

    berkshirehorn presumably I upset/disappointed someone

Would there be any point in accepting 5 million? We wouldn't get a replacement anywhere near as good. He'd only go if Aidy really wants him out which i doubt.

Yes but I think Marlon is a gamble. So many footballists are not the players they were after a serious injury and prolonged recouperation. At a figure of about £5M I think the odds then stack in our favour and it will be a business decision. Agreed we probably couldn't replace him, certainly not at the moment.

In the same vein that we sold Ash. We couldn't repalce him and we were not desperate for the money, hoqwever a figure was reached which meant that it made sense to sell assuming that the player was happy to leave.

    Hope I am wrong.

The "injury", Jamaican incident, nightclub incident etc.

It is also strange that despite answering bail last Month I haven't seen anything about being charged or no action being taken reported anywhere.

Personally, I think we have enough strikers now and like we done with Young would snap the arm off anyone who offered silly money such as 5million. Correct me if i am wrong but didn't Doris have a better or at least a very similar goals to game ratio last season? For all we know, King might have gone the whole season playing and only got 2 league goals (i very much doubht it but he certainly would not have got more than 15 tops)

  16. UEA_Hornet

Hmmm maybe, but then he might have been rebailed. Or lets face it Jon, a football player being released without charge is the least likely thing to get column inches ever ;)

I have a sneaking suspicion, that you may well be right about the "injury"

I only hope that it does'nt descend into the sort of pantomime it could!

Their has been some trash written about Marlon, you know why? Because he has a criminal record after the car incident and serving time. The same with Ash,when we signed him its splashed everywhere about the Knife incident and the football headlines came 2nd.

Marlon will play for us again, their isnt a problem with him and AB,who was the 1st person in the palace rumble with Fitz hall protecting Addie,Marlon was.

AB has given some footballers at our club 2nd chances in life,King,Ash,Carlisle to name but a few.

The thing that anger me most was on gloryhorns where 1 particular person who says he is always in the know started posting in Feb King is going to be sold and the club dont care where or how much we get for him.

I am friends with 1 particular player at watford and he rubbished it completely.Ive even passed the name of that person to this player,as he was also the 1st to quote on the wml that king was out on the eve of the charlton game.Ive told this person "I think marlon would like to meet you"

Marlon is not going anywhere unless we recieve a substantial bid and we can replace him with better. Also why would AB let Marlon on the pitch to get the crowd going and praise him if he was not in his plans?

Marlon is a quality striker at Championship level, but he didn't get his chance in the Prem. It's all 'what if's' but there is a strong chance that had he played the whole season (like Hendo) then his 'legend' status would have destroyed (like Hendo's). He has more quality than Henderson, but i think the Premiership was one step to far for him at the current time (like for all our players)

I don't see that he'd be first choice for Portsmouth and because they have money i think they will look elsewhere - too much of a gamble for them imo. That said, he might not be the same player he was, so it could also be a big risk by us IF we don't sell IF a good offer came in.

It's easy to forget just how good and influencial King is. Youtube some of the highlights from last season and watch how many goals involve him + how many crackers he scored

Totally agree. I don't want him to leave and I don't think any of the rumours have credibility.

  23. Oliver Philips MBE

Agree, but influence cuts both ways! Whilst he's not playing the only influence he has is off the pitch and whilst whipping up the crowd is very admirable, fighting in nightclubs etc isnt! for all we know it could have made his injury worse!

Frankly I could'nt care less if he were buggering dogs or clubing baby seals! If your doing the business on the pitch who cares. Whilst he's not then he should'nt be getting up to no good.

I agree on some sentiments of your post but nowdays its near on impossible for players to lead some sort of normality away from football. Some of the general public will go out of their way to wind players up to gain a reaction. This also happened to a few Notts Forest players as well a couple of months back, and because they are in the limelight its highlighted alot more, even if that player has done very little wrong that player is always deemed to be in the wrong when someone else has caused that situation.

It happens all the time nowdays in pubs and clubs and some people will bring it to light with the press because the other person is in the spotlight, and its wrong.
What do we say to all footballers, that they cant go out until their career is finished for the fear of being victamised. It sad but it will always happen,no matter who the footballer be.

True, comes with the territory though. Something everyone needs to remember. As you said you cant expect players to be saints and never go out and were all human, only so much **** you can take.

However, when even an average player earns more a week than the average fan does in a year then perhaps theirs a case for a litle sacrifice. Players can do what they like off the field it just always amazes me that they risk their careers and lucrative ones at that!!!

The other thing I can never get my head round is, if your a player earning 20-30k a week whats the excuse for being banned for drunk driving!!! Why not hire a Chauffer to drive you everywhere, surely the ultimate in bling....

According to the forest fans it was after the game, because after the 5-0 loss they were chanting to Neil harris, and Neil Harris said why you having ago at me I wasnt even playing.

Except that he scored 2 goals in 8 games and that was before the team had the chance to get acclimatized to the Premiership. If he had remained uninjured, it is likely that he would have more frequently rather than less as the season wore on. With him playing, Hendo is likely to have had more opportunities to break his duck (since defenders would have had to mark King leaving gaps elsewhere).

For most of the first half of the season, our problem was not making chances... it was putting them in the net. King was good at that. In his eight games, we drew half of them (and lost the others). Funnily, our next three were 2 draws and a win but we then pretty much collapsed until late January with 8 losses and 3 draws. With King playing and scoring another 5 goals (to maintain the 1 goal in every 4 games average), we would have probably won a couple and drawn a couple more, giving us perhaps 26 points now at least.

And that is probably a worst case scenario. It is just as likely that he would have scored more and that the team would have done much better. In his 8 games, we scored 7 goals. In the first 3 after his injury (including the win) we scored another 2... and then we scored just 3 goals in ELEVEN games. If the average had held, we would probably have scored 9 or 10. Since seven of the games were either lost by a single goal or a draw... those extra 6 goals could have given us 7 or 8 extra points... including probably not losing to Sheffield United and reviving their season.

King certainly won't be leaving in the summer, I suppose in January it could be possible depending on our league stance and how hes performing, but for the time being he will remain a Watford player, which in my opinion is absolutely vital if we are to again push for promotion next season, as there is not another striker we have that is anywhere near the level of ability that Marlon is.

I cant help but feel that as soon as the club thinks it can bring in revenue, they'll do just about anything to make us believe what a marvelous idea it is... If they do accept a bid for Marlon (which I think they will) they'll cite all the off field problems as the chief reason.
NO MR SIMPSON, actually the main reason is that you're all money mad!

I'll say this, selling King is NOT an option.

Financially we needed to sell Young. We don't, however, have that excuse for King.
