There's a ridiculous amount of players linked to us every transfer window, the majority of which we are never actually interested in - we're just a handy name for agents to drop in when planting stories on the internet to try and drum up some interest. But there are a few who we genuinely make enquiries for obviously and many don't come off. People on here and social media go crazy, thinking we've dragged our heels or been outbid but the truth is I think Watford almost always make the right decision when passing up on players who they deem too expensive or not the right fit. So thinking about the Sarr situation, the club have decided what he's worth and are currently sticking to their guns. And if we miss out or someone else pays over the odds, then fair enough. And that made me wonder, out of all the players we have shown a genuine interest in trying to sign, can anyone name one that has gone on to be a great success wherever they ended up? I'm struggling... There was that bloke Bournemouth signed, the one that went to Southampton... neither made an impact but the outcry online when we missed out on them was like we'd turned down Messi on a free! Anyone I've not thought of?
Yep. For a fact we missed out on Thomas Delaney, Alcacer, Nicolas Pepe, Sarabria off the top of my head. All of which we'd have made massive profits on if we'd paid that tiny bit extra. Soon to be Sarr too.
Was Alcacer ever a realistic target? Did he want to come to Watford? Delaney I don't remember being linked with, but that's two players who went to Dortmund instead of Watford. How much of that was their choice not to come to us. Pepe would have been a good signing, probably the most likely out of the four to have agreed to come here.
I saw him play for the reserves against L*ton. John Hartson was in the stands and squared up to someone who'd been shouting "scum" at the L*ton players. I think it must have been at Northwood. Anyway, I thought he was quite good but GT decided not to sign him.
Considering Ginos expertise I'm amazed they let Fernandes, Allan and Zielinksi go for so cheap. In terms of biggest regrets, Sarabia was the one I was raving about at the time. Pretty sure he was a 2m fee or on a free. Instead signed for Sevilla and scored 26 goals with 26 assists in 79 league games...and now just joined PSG.
I was trying to find a link but because of all the news around him recently I got bored going through google. It was a few seasons ago. We had the option to bring him to vicarage road but didn’t. Now he is a £60mil+ player. Definitely one of the Pozzo’s regrets.
Yeah that's why Delaney had agreed terms before we pulled out last minute. But hey why let that ruin your really witty post. Sarabria had also agreed a pre contract agreement when at Getafe. Probably best not to comment on things you don't know about.
