According to tribalfootball.com we are in a 2 horse race with Bolton to sign Gillespie off the Blunts...
Apparently we're lining up Stephen Caldwell from Sunderland on a bosman in the summer. Might be a case of us offering a small amount and taking him now instead? Capable centre back and has Premiership experience.
From Eat Sleep .................. Boothroyd in race against time Mon, Jan 29 2007 15:54Adrian Boothroyd is still hopeful of bolstering his Watford squad before Wednesday's deadline with up to five players linked. The Hornets boss has money to spend following the sale of Ashley Young to Aston Villa for an initial £8million and has been linked with a myriad of players over the past week.Sheffield United's Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie, 28-year-old Colchester United midfielder Karl Duguid, Belgian striker Emile Mpenza, Dutch forward Cecile Lopes and Sierra Leone frontman Mohammed Kallon are all potential signings. Boothroyd has already brought in Moses Ashikodi from Rangers, Rotherham duo Will Hoskins and Lee Williamson and Steve Kabba from Sheffield United during this month's transfer window, but he wants more as he bids to mastermind the club's great escape from the Premiership's relegation zone. Whatever materialises this week, Boothroyd has promised the club's bosses and fans he won't panic buy and bring players in just for the sake of it. He said recently: "January has been absolutely mad and a real experience for me. I'm sure the last week is going to be worse, not better. But people are beginning to panic now, so I will be careful. "I won't make any daft signings. I will make sure they will be right for the club and right for the team to take it forward. "Maybe it could be a big-wage loan signing, maybe it could be somebody for the future, but hopefully it will be someone who has been there, seen it and done it."
plaese sign kallon or mpenza, if we got both i think i would mess my pants. althought its hardly unlikely.
I don't think we'll go for both as they both are out'n'out strikers. And if we got both we'd almost have as many as Blunts. Seriously I can't see us needing both either. Of the two I think I prefer Kallon as the Mpenza thing with not doing trials seems a bit big-headed to me.
I don't think it is big headed at all and those were the words of the agent, not the player. Still, the number of strikers is irrelevant, more important is the overall improvement of quality. If we bring in two real goalscorers, this may well mean that hitherto regular players such as Hendo and Tamas are marginalised, with a view to them getting their marching orders in May. Frankly neither has been good enough this season, apart from some isolated moments, so we need to bring in players with more quality. Kabba may be seen as more of a wide fwd.
Hendo could well be on his way but Tamas was bought with the future in mind. Along with Hoskins and Moses their are the forward lineup for the season we become a top10 club. By then the others are gone.
